81-30-00 - EXHAUST SYSTEM SERVICING
1.
Refer to Chapter 78-30-00
2. VISUAL INSPECTION OF COMPLETE SYSTEM
A thorough inspection of the engine exhaust sys-
tem will detect any breaks or cracks causing leaks
which might result in the loss of optimum turbocharger
efficiency and engine power. Inspect exhaust system
per Chapter 78-30-00.
81-30-01 - INSPECTION “V” BAND CLAMP
1. Using crocus cloth, clean outer band of the multi-
segment “V” band clamp (contact Continental Motors
or your nearest Authorized Mooney Service Center for
P/N). Pay particular attention to the “Hi-Lok” pin areas
on the clamp.
2. With clamp in place and properly torqued:
A. Inspect outer band in the area of the “Hi-Lok” pin
areas for cracks (See Figure 81- 1). If cracks or loose
pins are found, replace clamp with new multi- segment
“V” band clamp.
-NOTE-
When replacement is required, install new “V”
band clamp over the exhaust flanges and torque
as shown below.
TORQUE PROCEDURES
Torque V- Band coupling to 30- 40 In- Lbs. Tap cou-
pling lightly around circumference with a non- metallic
hammer to equalize band tension and proper align-
ment, make sure to align the flanges and torque cou-
pling to 50- 60 In- Lbs. and tap band again.
-NOTE-
Mooney recommends “V” band clamp to be
re- torqued after first run-in.
Re- torque to a final net value of 50 to 60 In- Lbs. plus
nut running torque, safety wire as required per Conti-
nental Motors M18 manual.
81-40-00 - PERIODIC REPLACEMENT COM-
PONENTS
It is recommended that all exhaust system pipes, by-
pass pipe, clamps and miscellaneous mounting hard-
ware be replaced at engine overhaul time or 2000
hours, whichever occurs first.
However, the V- band clamp holding the tailpipe shall
be replaced after it has been loosened and re- torqued
two (2) times. Each third (3rd) time, tailpipe shall
have a new clamp installed.
-NOTE-
Tailpipe V- Band clamps shall be replaced w ith a
new clamp after two (2) removals or as refer-
enced in Chapter 04- 00- 00 of this Service &
Maintenance Manual. Complete Form QA 1027M
for V- B and clamp installation and insert into
aircraft log book.
-NOTE-
When Removal/Replacement of V- Band Clamp is
performed, a Quality Assurance Form QA1027M
must be filled out in Section 5.
A thorough inspection of all components should be
made any time the exhaust system is removed from the
engine for component replacement. The inspection
should be made in the interest of preventive mainte-
nance.
