This document describes the Morphy Richards 10/12 cup filter coffee maker, covering its functions, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.
Function Description:
The Morphy Richards filter coffee maker is designed to brew coffee and, in some models, froth milk. It comes in various versions, including manual and digital interfaces, and options for glass or thermal carafes. The primary function is to brew filter coffee by passing hot water through ground coffee. Some models include a milk frother for preparing milk-based coffee drinks like cappuccinos and lattes. The device features a measuring spoon storage area, a water re-fill point, and a permanent mesh filter within a filter holder. Depending on the model, it can have either a manual interface with a function selector for 1/2 or full carafe brewing and an illuminated water level indicator, or a digital interface with a 24-hour clock, programming mode, automatic timer function, and cup selection indicator. Both interfaces include controls for coffee strength. The digital models also feature indicators for auto keep warm, milk frother device ON, and milk hot plate ON. The milk frother, when present, uses a steel jug and a frother control lever to heat and froth milk. Hot plates are included in glass carafe versions to keep coffee warm after brewing.
Important Technical Specifications:
The coffee maker is designed for household and similar applications, including farmhouses, hotels, motels, residential environments, and bed and breakfast settings. It is not suitable for staff kitchen areas in shops, offices, or other working environments. The appliance operates on A.C. (Alternating Current) and requires a voltage supply that matches the rating plate. It is a 10/12 cup capacity machine, with specific cup selections for 1/2 carafe (1-6 cups for glass jug, 1-5 cups for thermal jug) and 1 carafe (7-12 cups for glass jug, 6-10 cups for thermal jug). The plug supplied is a 13 amp BS1362 fuse, and the appliance must be earthed. The automatic keep warm function in glass carafe models keeps coffee warm for up to two hours, after which the machine automatically switches off for safety. Thermal carafe versions keep coffee warm for up to four hours without a hot plate. The milk frothing process typically takes between 30-60 seconds.
Usage Features:
Before first use, or after a period of disuse, it is important to run water through the machine to rinse it and warm it up.
Making Coffee (Manual Interface):
- Press the lid opening push button to open the hinged lid.
- Fill the water reservoir with the desired amount of cold water, using the level indicator and jug markings as a guide. Never use warm or hot water.
- Spoon the required amount of ground filter coffee into the mesh filter, spreading it evenly. One level measuring spoon per cup is suggested. Ensure the filter is properly seated.
- Close the lid securely.
- Slide the jug (glass or thermal) into the coffee maker, ensuring it sits correctly on the hot plate (or base recess for thermal carafes). The jug lid must be in place during brewing to prevent flooding.
- Select the desired coffee strength using the strength selector on the lid.
- Plug in and switch on the coffee maker. Rotate the function selector to either 1/2 carafe or full carafe. The cup selection and brewing ON indicators will light up, and brewing will begin.
- For glass carafe models, the machine will automatically switch to keep warm after brewing. For thermal carafe models, switch off the machine once brewing is complete.
Making Coffee (Digital Interface):
- Set the clock by plugging in the machine and using the hour and minute buttons. The clock is 24-hour.
- Press the lid opening push button to open the hinged lid.
- Fill the water reservoir with the desired amount of cold water, using the level indicator and jug markings as a guide.
- Spoon the required amount of ground filter coffee into the mesh filter, spreading it evenly.
- Close the lid securely.
- Slide the jug into the coffee maker, ensuring it sits correctly. The jug lid must be in place.

- Press the power ON/OFF selection button. The display will light up, and the cup selection indicator will flash, showing the previous selection (or default 1 full carafe if unplugged).
- Press the cup selection button to choose between 1/2 carafe or full carafe. If no buttons are pressed for 2 seconds, brewing will begin.
- The brewing indicator will illuminate from left to right, and coffee will flow into the jug.
- For glass carafe models, the machine will automatically switch to keep warm after brewing. For thermal carafe models, the brewing indicator will stop, and the quality indicator will remain solid.
Automatic Timer Function (Digital Interface):
- Press the programme button. The display will show the previous set time and cup selection (or default 12:00 and full carafe).

- Remove the milk jug, press the lid release button to disengage the lid, and pour/spoon frothed milk onto coffee.
Maintenance Features:
Refilling:
Switch off the coffee maker and allow 5 minutes to cool before lifting the lid and refilling with cold water.
Descaling:
Regular descaling is crucial for optimal performance, especially in hard water areas (every 2-3 months for hard water, every 6 months for moderately hard water).
- Use a proprietary liquid descaler specifically made for coffee makers and plastic kettles.
- Follow the descaler instructions.
- After descaling, operate the coffee maker with just water 3 times.
- The permanent mesh filter should not be in place during descaling.
Cleaning Care:
- Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool.
- Do not immerse the coffee maker in liquid.
- Rinse the water tank occasionally with cold water. Do not use a cloth, as lint can clog the maker.
- Remove the permanent filter and filter holder, discard used coffee, and wash with warm soapy water. Extended soaking is recommended during descaling. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Wash the coffee jug and milk jug, including all frothing components, in warm soapy water. All milk jug and coffee jug components are dishwasher safe.
- Wipe all external surfaces with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
- Take care not to damage the non-drip valve on the bottom of the filter holder during cleaning.
- Never use harsh or abrasive cleaners.
It is recommended to disassemble and clean the milk frother jug and its components immediately after use to prevent dried milk from becoming difficult to remove.
