If nothing is working and there's no display on the terminal, it could be a power issue. Ensure the Motorola Controller system is properly plugged in and the board is securely installed. Verify all necessary cables are correctly connected. If the LEDs are lit, ensure the board is in the correct slot, typically the first (leftmost) for VMEmodules, and that the “system controller” function is enabled. Also, check that the system console terminal is configured correctly.

If the Motorola Controller displays output but the keyboard doesn't work, first, check the keyboard connections and power. Next, verify the settings of the board jumpers and configuration switches. Finally, ensure you haven't accidentally activated flow control by pressing a HOLD or PAUSE key, or by typing -S. If so, press the HOLD or PAUSE key again, or type -Q.

Why doesn't the Motorola MVME162P-344 debug prompt appear at powerup?

Brent ClarkAug 15, 2025
If the debug prompt doesn't appear and the Motorola Controller board doesn't autoboot, disconnect power from the system. Check that the debugger device is installed and set switch S4 segment 5 to ON to enable the EPROM. Reconnect power and restart the system by pressing the RESET and ABORT switches simultaneously, releasing RESET first, waiting seven seconds, then releasing ABORT.

If the debug prompt appears but the Motorola Controller board doesn't autoboot, the initial debugger environment parameters may be set incorrectly. Start the onboard calendar clock and timer by typing: set mmddyyhhmm , replacing the characters with the month, day, year, hour, and minute.
