Winch Function and Cable Examination
7
Note: Ensure gloves and safety glasses are
worn.
Set up the Tripod (max height), attach the Pulley and
Winch, as for use.
During this examination it is vital that tension is
maintained on the cable at all times when the Winch
handle is being operated.
Winch Function Examination:
1. Grasp the cable with the left or right hand and
apply hand tight tension to the cable. With your
second hand, fold out the handle on the Winch
and wind the handle, lowering the snap hook till it
reaches the surface.
2. Once the snap hook has reached the surface,
retract the snap hook by winding the crank handle
in the opposite direction, whilst retaining the
tension on the cable. A distinct clicking sound
should be heard when raising. The Winch should
lower and raise with no adverse effects.
Cable Examination:
1. Grasp and maintain tension on the cable. Fully
unwind the given length of the cable on the
Winch. During the unwind examine the cable. A
plastic sleeve or paint mark will give you a visual
indication the cable is fully extracted.
Note:If the cable is tted with a plastic sleeve this
will cause an uneven layer during the rewind. If the
cable end is mark with paint this will not occur.
2. Retain tension on the cable and begin the rewind.
Observe cable winding onto the drum. The
pressure plate assists with this process guiding
and controlling the forming of the layers. At the
same time make a conrmatory examination of
the cable.
3. Record nding of this examination on your
examination check sheet.
