Overview

This document is an operator's manual for an MTD Log Splitter, Model Series 550-570. It provides comprehensive information on assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting for the device.

Function Description:

The log splitter is a power-driven machine designed to split wood. It utilizes a hydraulic cylinder to drive a wedge into logs, separating them along the grain. The machine is equipped with an internal combustion engine to power the hydraulic system. It can be operated in both horizontal and vertical positions, offering flexibility for different log sizes and user preferences. The vertical splitting position is recommended for heavy logs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Hydraulic Fluid: Dexron III automatic transmission fluid or 10W AW hydraulic fluid.
  • Reservoir Tank Capacity: 3.5 gallons.
  • Hydraulic Filter: 10 micron hydraulic filter (Part number 723-0405), to be changed every 50 hours of operation.
  • Engine Oil: Refer to the separate engine manufacturer's manual for specifications.
  • Towing Speed: Do not tow faster than 45 mph.
  • Coupler Hitch: Designed for a class I or higher 2" ball.
  • Flexible Pump Coupler: Nylon "spider" insert between the pump and engine shaft.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The manual details the steps for unpacking the unit, attaching the jack stand and tongue, connecting the cylinder to the beam, and preparing the hydraulic system. This includes filling the reservoir tank, priming the pump, and cycling the wedge to remove trapped air.
  • Control Handle: Features three positions:
    • FORWARD (or DOWN): Moves the wedge to split wood. The handle returns to neutral automatically when released (forward position only).
    • NEUTRAL: Stops the wedge movement.
    • REVERSE (or UP): Returns the wedge toward the cylinder. The handle stays in reverse until fully retracted, then returns to neutral automatically. Manual return to neutral is also possible.
  • Beam Positions: The log splitter beam can be secured in either a horizontal or vertical position using dedicated beam locks. The vertical position is recommended for splitting heavy logs.
  • Log Dislodger: Designed to remove partially split wood from the wedge, especially with large diameter or freshly cut wood. The operator is warned against using hands to remove stuck wood.
  • Safety Features:
    • Spark arrester for the engine exhaust system is required in certain areas (e.g., California) to prevent fires on unimproved forest, brush, or grass-covered land.
    • Operator zone and adjacent area must be kept clear for safe footing.
    • Bystanders, helpers, pets, and children must be kept at least 20 feet away during operation.
    • Always wear safety shoes/heavy boots, safety glasses/goggles, and ear protection.
    • Never operate under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
    • Only one adult should stabilize the log and operate the control handle.
    • Logs should be cut with square ends before splitting and placed with the least square end toward the beam and wedge.
    • Never attempt to split more than one log at a time unless the ram has fully extended and a second log is needed to complete the separation of the first log.
    • Extreme care is advised when handling gasoline due to its flammability and explosive vapors.
  • Transporting: Before transport, the fuel valve must be turned OFF, the beam lowered to the horizontal position and locked, and the jack stand secured. The coupler hitch should be attached securely to a towing vehicle. Local, state, and federal towing requirements must be checked.

Maintenance Features:

  • Before Each Use:
    • Check hydraulic fluid level and refill if necessary.
    • Check engine oil level and refill if necessary.
    • Fill gasoline if necessary.
    • Lubricate the beam area (where the splitting wedge slides) with engine oil (not grease).
    • Attach spark plug wire.
  • Hydraulic Fluid and Reservoir Screen:
    • Maintain fluid level within the specified range on the dipstick.
    • Change hydraulic fluid every 100 hours of operation. This involves disconnecting the suction hose, unthreading and cleaning the reservoir screen, draining old fluid, and refilling with new Dexron III or 10W AW hydraulic fluid.
    • Dispose of used fluid at approved recycling centers.
    • Flushing the reservoir tank and hoses with kerosene is recommended during service.
  • Hydraulic Filter: Change every 50 hours of operation.
  • Beam and Splitting Wedge:
    • Lubricate both sides of the beam with engine oil before each use.
    • The wedge plate's "gibs" (spacers) can be removed, rotated, or turned over for even wear.
    • Adjustment bolts on the wedge assembly should be readjusted to ensure free movement without excessive space.
  • Hose Clamps: Check tightness on suction and return hoses before each use and at least once a season, respectively.
  • Flexible Pump Coupler: Replace if vibration or noise occurs between the engine and pump, or if it deteriorates. The manual provides detailed instructions for replacement, including setting the proper clearance/gap.
  • Engine Maintenance: Refer to the separate engine manual for specific instructions.
  • Storage:
    • Thoroughly clean the log splitter. Pressure washers or garden hoses are not recommended.
    • Wipe with an oiled rag to prevent rust.
    • Drain the fuel tank and run the engine until fuel lines and carburetor are empty.
    • Remove the spark plug, pour 1/2 ounce of engine oil into the cylinder, crank slowly to distribute, and replace the spark plug.
    • Store in a clean, dry area, away from corrosive materials and ignition sources.
    • If storing in an unventilated or metal shed, rustproof with light oil or silicone.
  • Troubleshooting: A detailed table is provided for common problems, causes, and remedies, covering engine issues, cylinder movement, and hydraulic system leaks. For repairs beyond the listed remedies, contact an authorized service center.
  • Warranty: A limited warranty of two years covers defects in material and workmanship, provided the product is operated and maintained according to the manual and not subjected to misuse or neglect. Normal wear parts have a 30-day warranty. Log splitter pumps, valves, and cylinders have a one-year warranty. The warranty does not cover engine components (which have a separate manufacturer's warranty), non-genuine MTD parts, transportation charges, service calls, or alterations to safety features.
