Why MTD Lawn Mower engine fails to start?

  The MTD Lawn Mower engine might fail to start due to several reasons. It could be that the blade control handle is disengaged (engage it), the spark plug wire is disconnected (connect it), the fuel tank is empty or contains stale fuel (fill it with clean, fresh gasoline), the engine isn't primed (refer to the engine manual), the spark plug is faulty (clean, adjust the gap, or replace it), the fuel line is blocked (clean it), or the engine is flooded (wait a few minutes to restart, without priming).

  If your MTD Lawn Mower engine runs erratically, here are a few things to check: ensure the spark plug wire is connected and tight, clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline if the fuel line is blocked or the fuel is stale, clear the gas cap vent if it's plugged, and drain the fuel tank and carburetor, then refill with fresh fuel if there's water or dirt in the fuel system. For a dirty air cleaner or a carburetor out of adjustment, please refer to the engine manual.

  If your MTD Lawn Mower isn't mulching grass properly, it could be due to wet or excessively high grass, or a dull blade. Avoid mowing when the grass is wet, mow high grass at a high cutting height first and then again at the desired height (or make a narrower cutting path), and sharpen or replace the blade if it's dull.
