Why MTD Tiller engine fails to start?
    • J
      John SnyderAug 19, 2025
The engine might fail to start due to several reasons: the fuel tank is empty or the fuel is stale, in which case you should fill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline, considering that fuel will not last over thirty days unless a fuel stabilizer is used. Another reason might be that the throttle control lever is not in the correct starting position, so move the throttle lever to the start position. Other potential causes include a blocked fuel line (clean the fuel line), the choke not being in the ON position (move the choke to the ON position), a disconnected spark plug wire (connect the wire to the spark plug), or a faulty spark plug (clean, adjust the gap, or replace it).

How to fix MTD Tiller engine that fails to start?
    • S
      Sydney BarrettAug 21, 2025
If the MTD Tiller engine won't start, several factors could be at play. First, ensure the fuel tank isn't empty or filled with stale fuel; if so, replenish with clean, fresh gasoline. Note that fuel degrades after thirty days without a stabilizer. Next, verify the throttle control lever is in the correct starting position and that the choke is in the ON position. Also, check for a blocked fuel line and clean it if necessary. Make sure the spark plug wire is connected securely. If the spark plug is faulty, clean, adjust the gap, or replace it. Lastly, consider the possibility of a flooded engine.

What to do if MTD Tiller engine runs erratic?
    • B
      Brittany MartinezAug 23, 2025
If the engine runs erratically, it could be due to several reasons. First, ensure the choke lever is in the OFF position, as the unit might be running on CHOKE. Also, check the spark plug wire and connect and tighten it if it's loose. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel can also cause this issue; clean the fuel line and fill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline, remembering that fuel won't last over thirty days without a fuel stabilizer. Other potential causes include a plugged vent in the gas cap (clear the vent), or water or dirt in the fuel system (drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel).
