Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the GFK-160A Blower Kit with Cord Set, designed for use with fireplaces. It is an aftermarket accessory intended to enhance the heating efficiency of a fireplace by circulating warm air.

Function Description

The GFK-160A Blower Kit is designed to draw cool room air into the bottom of the fireplace, circulate it around the firebox to be heated, and then exhaust the heated air out the top into the room. This process improves heat distribution and overall heating efficiency. The kit includes a blower unit, a thermodisc (heat sensor), a variable speed control, and a cord set for electrical connection. The blower operates only when the thermodisc detects a temperature of approximately 120°F (49°C) or higher, ensuring that the fan only runs when the fireplace is hot enough to produce warm air. The variable speed control allows users to adjust the fan's airflow to their preference.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Requirement: 120V/60Hz.
  • Thermodisc Activation Temperature: Approximately 120°F (49°C).
  • Blower Type: Magnetic mount, designed to be positioned in the lower vent space of the fireplace.
  • Cord Set: Includes a 3-prong power plug, a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter, and a jumper wire for various wiring configurations.
  • Components:
    • Blower - Magnetic Mount (Qty: 1)
    • Thermodisc / Heat Sensor (Qty: 1)
    • Variable Speed Control (Qty: 1)
    • Power Cord (Qty: 1)
    • 3-Prong to 2-Prong Adapter (Qty: 1)
    • Jumper Wire (Black) (Qty: 1)
    • Small Ground Screw (Qty: 1)
    • Installation Instructions (Downloadable) (Qty: 1)

Usage Features

  • Improved Heat Distribution: By actively circulating air, the blower helps distribute heat more effectively throughout the room, reducing cold spots and increasing overall comfort.
  • Automatic Operation: The thermodisc ensures that the blower automatically turns on when the fireplace reaches an optimal operating temperature (approx. 120°F) and turns off when it cools down, preventing the circulation of cold air.
  • Adjustable Airflow: The variable speed control allows users to fine-tune the blower's speed, providing control over the amount of heated air circulated and the noise level. Turning the dial to the left clicks it off, and turning it to the right reduces speed.
  • Magnetic Mounting: The blower unit features magnetic mounts, simplifying installation by allowing it to be easily positioned and secured within the fireplace's lower vent space.
  • Versatile Wiring Options: The kit supports different junction box styles (Power Strip style, Metal style, Power Cord style) and includes necessary adapters and jumper wires to accommodate various fireplace electrical configurations.
  • Compatibility: Designed for use with various fireplace models, including multi-sided fireplaces (e.g., "SL" Series, ST & PIER models), with specific instructions provided for different configurations.
  • Safety Features: The installation instructions emphasize critical safety warnings, including turning off gas and electrical power before installation and ensuring that excess wiring does not contact moving or hot objects, mitigating risks of fire and electrical shock. The blower must be grounded in accordance with local and national electrical codes.

Maintenance Features

  • Pre-Installation Cleaning: Users are instructed to clean the fireplace's vent space of drywall dust or other fragments before installation. This prevents potential bearing or motor damage to the blower, which would not be covered under warranty.
  • Damage Inspection: Users are advised to check the contents of the carton for any damage during shipment and explicitly warned not to install a damaged blower kit, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Wiring Containment: During installation, it is crucial to contain any excess wire from the cord set to prevent contact with moving or hot objects, which could lead to damage or safety hazards.
  • Thermodisc Placement: Proper placement of the thermodisc, ensuring it touches a hot metal surface on the underside of the firebox, is essential for accurate temperature sensing and automatic blower operation.
  • Variable Speed Control Mounting: The variable speed control can be mounted on the right side of the lower vent space or on the front of the center control panel, allowing for convenient access and adjustment. The mounting location should be wiped clean before applying the velcro backing for secure attachment.
  • Regular Inspection: While not explicitly detailed as a maintenance feature, the emphasis on proper installation and damage inspection implies that regular checks of the blower and its connections would contribute to its longevity and safe operation.
  • Warranty Information: The document notes that bearing or motor damage resulting from dust/fragments in the vent space is not covered by the warranty, highlighting the importance of pre-installation cleaning. The manufacturer, My Fireplace Blower LLC, is not responsible for damage incurred during installation or resulting from information within the document, emphasizing the installer's responsibility to consult the fireplace's Owner's Installation Manual for supplemental information and adhere to all local codes.
