Overview

The Navkom R7 BBX Mini Control Unit is a sophisticated fingerprint reader designed for secure access control, offering various modes of operation and advanced features for managing users and settings. This device serves as a central component for controlling access to doors and managing integrated LED lighting, providing a blend of security, convenience, and smart home integration.

Function Description

The primary function of the Navkom R7 BBX Mini Control Unit is to provide secure access control through fingerprint recognition. It allows users to unlock doors by simply placing a registered finger on its sensor. The device supports a capacity of up to 498 fingerprints, ensuring ample storage for multiple users and their various fingers. Beyond basic access, the control unit integrates with an X-manager app, expanding its functionality to include remote door unlocking, management of LED lighting, and detailed user administration.

The device operates in three distinct control modes: Analogue, App, and Hybrid.

  • Analogue Control: This mode offers straightforward operation using physical buttons on the control unit, a remote control, or by placing a finger on the sensor. It's ideal for users who prefer a simpler, direct interaction without relying on a smartphone app. In this mode, administrator fingerprints are crucial for initial setup and managing other users.
  • App Control: This mode leverages the X-manager app on a smartphone or tablet (Android or Apple) to provide a comprehensive suite of features. Users can find, name, and add their reader within the app, establish connections, and manage all aspects of the device remotely. This includes entering administrator and user fingerprints, unlocking doors, and configuring LED lighting settings. The app offers a more intuitive and feature-rich experience, allowing for detailed control and monitoring.
  • Hybrid Control: This mode combines elements of both analogue and app control. It allows for analogue reader control (using the sensor or remote control for access) while utilizing the app exclusively for unlocking doors and managing LED lighting. This offers a balance for users who appreciate the convenience of physical access methods but also desire the advanced management capabilities of a smartphone app for specific functions.

A key security feature is the Fingerprint Reader Security Lockdown. If an unrecognized finger is placed on the sensor seven times consecutively, the reader will lock for a period, starting at 30 seconds and progressively increasing with further unsuccessful attempts, up to a maximum of 5 minutes. During this lockdown, a purple LED flashes, and the reader becomes unresponsive to fingerprints, preventing brute-force attempts. A successful fingerprint recognition resets this count.

The device also includes a Factory Reset function, which is critical for initial setup and for reconfiguring the device. Performing a factory reset erases all stored fingerprints (including administrator fingerprints), deletes paired remote controls and smartphones, and restores all settings to their default. This ensures a clean slate for new installations or when changing control modes. After a factory reset, the device enters a 1-minute "Test Function" where the sensor-LED flashes green, and any fingerprint can unlock the door, allowing for easy initial testing before administrator fingerprints are entered.

Usage Features

The Navkom R7 BBX Mini Control Unit is designed for user-friendly operation, with clear instructions for fingerprint entry and device management.

Placing Your Finger on the Sensor Properly:

For optimal performance, users must ensure their fingerprint covers at least 70% of the sensor surface. Pressing the finger firmly, especially for smaller fingerprints, helps achieve sufficient coverage. The finger should be placed in the center of the sensor where the fingerprint is most pronounced. Dry skin is a common cause of poor reading; moisturizing or lightly touching a damp surface can help, but the finger should not be wet. It is crucial not to move the finger while reading is in progress and to wait for the device to beep to confirm a successful entry. For successful fingerprint entry, a finger must be placed on the sensor three times to ensure quality input and good reading. It is highly recommended to enter multiple fingers from both hands for each user to provide backup in case of injury to a primary finger.

Administrator Fingerprints:

The first three saved fingerprints are designated as "administrator fingerprints" and hold special privileges. These fingerprints are entered by the device owner and are essential for performing input and deletion operations, including adding new users and managing settings. Once the first three memory spots are filled with administrator fingerprints, only user fingerprints can be entered. Administrator fingerprints should be chosen carefully, ideally from uninjured fingers with clear patterns, as they cannot be deleted individually and can only be removed by a factory reset. They also activate Relay 2, offering additional control capabilities. When the reader memory is empty, any fingerprint can be entered, so it's vital to enter administrator fingerprints immediately after installation to prevent unauthorized access.

User Fingerprints Entry:

After administrator fingerprints are set, users can add their fingerprints. This process also involves placing the finger on the sensor three times consecutively. Each successful entry is confirmed with a short beep, and a long beep signifies that the fingerprint has been saved. If a fingerprint is too damaged or unclear, the red LED will light up, and the device will beep five times, stopping the operation. In such cases, a high-quality, clean, and moist finger should be used.

App Functions (X-manager app):

The X-manager app provides extensive control over the BBX Mini Control Unit.

  • Touch to Open: A simple tap on this tab in the app unlocks the door, offering remote access.
  • Relay Opening Time: Users can adjust the duration (1 to 60 seconds) for which the relay remains switched on. This is particularly useful when integrating with electric strikes.
  • Blue Backlight: The blue backlight that illuminates the reader in standby mode can be turned off if it is found bothersome.
  • LED Settings: For doors with integrated LED lighting, the app allows for comprehensive control. Users can adjust brightness (1% to 100%) and set schedules for turning the lighting on/off. Options include continuous 24-hour lighting, automatic on/off at sunset/sunrise (based on phone location), or custom intervals with two configurable periods per day.
  • Adding People: The app facilitates adding new users by entering their name and choosing between administrator or user rights. Administrator rights grant full control, while user rights only allow door opening. Each person requires three fingerprint entries for quality input.
  • List of Entered People: The app displays a list of all registered users, indicating their access level (User/Administrator) and the number of entered fingerprints. Additional fingerprints can be added at any time. Users can be assigned schedules to limit their entry times, and individuals can be deleted from the list.
  • Settings: This section allows for advanced configurations. "Free Entrance Mode" enables the door to be opened by any fingerprint for a set period (1 to 1440 minutes), indicated by a green LED. "Database Import/Export" allows transferring fingerprint databases between readers, a useful feature for multi-device installations. The "System" tab provides software version information, lists paired devices, and allows adding remote controls.
  • History: The app logs the last 100 events, including successful entries by users and administrators, attempts to enter outside scheduled times, and temporary reader blockages. This history cannot be deleted, with new events overwriting the oldest ones.
  • Schedules: Users can create up to five schedules to limit entry times for specific days of the week. Options include 24-hour access, no access, or limited access within defined timeframes. Schedules can be activated or deactivated, and when active, they are indicated by a green power icon. Deactivating a schedule grants unlimited access to assigned users.

Maintenance Features

The Navkom R7 BBX Mini Control Unit requires minimal maintenance, primarily focusing on keeping the fingerprint sensor clean to ensure optimal performance.

  • Sensor Cleaning: The fingerprint sensor should always be kept clean. If the reader is used with greasy or dirty fingers, dirt may accumulate on the sensor, leading to poor performance. In such cases, the sensor should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Cleaning Precautions: It is crucial to avoid using aggressive cleaners, polishing pastes, or acids on the sensor. Cleaning or scratching the sensor surface with hard and sharp objects can cause damage, leading to device failure and voiding the warranty. Adhering to these simple cleaning guidelines will help maintain the device's accuracy and longevity.
