Overview

This document outlines the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Rook Fire Table, an outdoor appliance designed to provide warmth and ambiance. It is crucial to adhere to all instructions and warnings to ensure safe operation and prevent injury, property damage, or death.

Function Description:

The Rook Fire Table is a gas-powered outdoor fire feature. It is designed for use with either propane or natural gas, and it includes a burner, burner pan, and associated gas fittings to create an open flame. The unit is intended to be a stationary outdoor appliance, providing a focal point for gathering and relaxation. It is not designed for cooking or for use with solid or alternative fuels. The fire table incorporates a key valve for controlling gas flow and ignition, ensuring user control over the flame.

Usage Features:

The fire table is designed for outdoor use only and should be placed on a flat, level surface with adequate clearance from combustible materials (4ft on sides, 6ft from top). Before initial use, the burner and burner plate are pre-installed at the factory, but their tightness should be verified after transportation.

For Natural Gas units, a gas professional is required to run an underground gas line to the fire feature's location. This involves determining the correct pipe size based on BTU requirements, gas pressure, and distance from the regulator. The stubbed-out end of the gas line should be fitted with a 1/2" NPT ball valve shutoff and a flare fitting. A flex hose connects the gas pipe to the key valve within the fire feature, and another flex hose connects the key valve to the burner. The key valve's arrow must point in the direction of gas flow towards the burner plate. All fittings must be tightened with a wrench, not by hand, and gas lines should be tested for leaks over a 24-hour period before covering the pipes and finalizing the foundation.

For Liquid Propane units, the fire table comes with a burner, orifice, flex hose, and regulator that attach to a propane tank (not included). The gas hose connects from the propane tank, through a vent underneath the unit, to the key valve. Another flex hose connects the key valve to the flare fitting at the bottom of the burner. Similar to natural gas units, the key valve's arrow should point towards the burner plate, and all fittings must be wrench-tightened. The liquid propane supply cylinder must comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications.

Ignition (Manual Light):

To ignite the fire table, a fireplace lighter (not a match or cigarette lighter) is required. Hold the tip of the lit fireplace lighter close to the burner. Insert the fire table key and turn it to the "ON" position to initiate gas flow. For propane units, the valve on the propane tank must be opened first. If the burner does not light within 5 seconds, turn the key to "OFF," wait 10 seconds, and try again. If ignition still fails, a local gas technician should be consulted. Once the burner lights, immediately remove your hand and allow the burner to operate for a few minutes before turning it off. The valve should be completely closed, and the key removed when the fire feature is unattended. For propane units, the tank valve must also be completely closed when not in use.

After successful ignition, fire media (lava rocks, glass, etc.) can be slowly poured onto the burner pan and spread evenly. It is crucial not to overfill the pan, as this can lead to smaller flames, gas buildup, and potential explosion. The unit's vents (lower and upper) must remain unobstructed to ensure proper combustion and prevent gas accumulation.

Adjustment:

Before moving or adjusting the fire feature or its media, allow it to cool completely, which may take 30 minutes to an hour depending on its size. All gas valves must be completely closed and disconnected prior to any movement.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Rook Fire Table.

  • Cleaning: The unit should be wiped down before every use. Spills and messes should be cleaned immediately with mild soap, water, and a rag to prevent stains from setting.
  • Sealing: For concrete units, it is recommended to reseal the unit every two years with a water-based concrete sealer.
  • Hose and Fitting Inspection: Hoses and fittings should be checked at least once a month for cracks, abrasions, and leaks.
  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the fire feature for any obstructions or combustible materials on or near the unit.
  • Storage: When not in use, the fire feature should be covered with a designated fire pit or barbecue cover.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides guidance for common issues:

  • Burner will not light: Possible causes include air in the gas line (requiring several attempts to purge), debris in the gas line (requiring professional cleaning), or improper gas pressure (requiring tank refill/replacement for LP units or gas professional confirmation for NG units).
  • Burner will not stay lit: This can be due to improper gas pressure (as above) or improperly applied fire media (too dense, requiring reduction and even spreading).
  • Noise: If noise occurs, check for gas hose restrictions (remove tight bends/kinks) or excessive gas flow (check and reset gas regulator).
  • Unit is smoking: Possible causes include poor fuel quality (inspect LP tank/hose or contact NG company), excessive flame blockage (spread media evenly), or improper air/fuel mixture (remove foreign items, check orifice sizing).
  • Burner flame is too high or too low: This can be caused by incorrect gas supply pressure (as above), blocked burner ports or orifice (clear debris), or improper orifice size (verify with factory).
  • Unit producing unwanted odors (gas leak): Immediately turn off the key valve but leave the gas source on/open. Inspect hoses and connections with soapy water for bubbles. If a leak is found, turn off gas immediately and contact the factory. If no leak is found, inspect the LP tank for damage or contact the NG company.
  • Color fading: For concrete units, apply a coat of cement sealer annually.

Safety Precautions:

  • Never attempt to move the fire feature alone.
  • Wrap the unit in a furniture blanket and use a 3/4" plywood piece between the dolly and the unit for stability during movement.
  • Always move the unit with its base down; do not place it on its side.
  • Do not use a wheelbarrow or other unbalanced equipment to move the unit.
  • Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors/liquids near the appliance.
  • In case of gas smell, immediately switch off the main gas supply, do not attempt to light any appliance, avoid electrical switches or phones, evacuate the area, and call the gas supplier or fire department.
  • This appliance is for use with propane or natural gas only; no solid or alternative fuels.
  • Installation and service must be performed by a licensed/certified contractor or qualified professional.
  • Neighbor recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors in occupied spaces near the appliance.
  • Do not alter any component or design of the unit.
  • The fire feature is not intended for cooking.
  • Never use the fire feature in windy conditions.
  • Do not touch hot surfaces, hot media, or open flames.
  • Do not reach, jump, or walk across the unit, media, or open flames.
  • Do not ignite the fire feature when media is wet, as this can cause cracking and bursting.
  • Do not leave pets or children unattended around the fire feature.
