Usage Features

The E17C Mini Excavator is designed for versatility and ease of operation. Its compact size allows it to maneuver in tight spaces, making it ideal for urban construction, landscaping, utility work, and other projects where larger equipment is not feasible. The hydraulic pilot system for the main control valve provides smooth and responsive control, enhancing operator precision. The rubber tracks minimize damage to sensitive surfaces, a key feature for landscaping and residential work. The machine's various cylinder dimensions and working range specifications indicate its capability for a variety of digging, lifting, and dumping tasks. The Tier IV engine ensures reduced emissions, aligning with modern environmental regulations and allowing operation in areas with strict air quality standards. The machine's design includes features for operator protection, such as compliance with ISO 12117-2 / ISO 10262 LEVEL 1 for Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS).

Maintenance Features

The service manual emphasizes several key aspects of maintenance to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the E17C Mini Excavator:

General Maintenance Practices:

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning of metal parts with cleaning solution and steam, followed by drying and oiling.
  • Inspection: Thorough inspection of disassembled parts for wear or damage, and prompt replacement of damaged parts.
  • Bearing: Replacement of loose bearings and proper lubrication with grease.
  • Needle bearing: Careful insertion of needle bearings to avoid damage, and greasing the section where the needle bearing will be inserted.
  • Gear: Regular checks for wear and damage.
  • Oil seal, O-ring, gasket: Always install new seals, O-rings, and gaskets, applying grease to the sections where they will be inserted.
  • Shaft: Checks for wear and damage, and inspection of bearings and checks for damaged oil seals on the shaft.
  • Service parts: Use only NEW HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION genuine service parts.
  • Lubricants (fuel, hydraulic oil): Use the oil specified in the operator's manual or service manual. Any breakdowns arising from the use of unspecified fuel or hydraulic oil are not covered by the warranty.

Specific Maintenance Procedures:

  • Shimming: For adjustment operation, select adjusting shims individually using a micrometer, then add up the recorded values. Do not rely on measuring the entire shimming set.
  • Rotating shaft seals: Proper installation involves cleaning the shaft, checking the working surface, positioning the seal lip facing the fluid, applying a thin layer of lubricant, and pressing down using a flat punch or seal installation tool.
  • O-ring seals: Lubricate O-ring seals before insertion.
  • Sealing compounds: Apply a sealing compound on mating surfaces when specified by the procedure.

Protecting Electronic and Electrical Systems:

  • Never make or break any of the charging circuit connections when the engine is running.
  • Never short any of the charging components to ground.
  • Always disconnect the ground cable from the battery before arc welding on the machine or any machine attachment.
  • Position the welder ground clamp as close to the welding area as possible.
  • If welding in close proximity to a computer module, remove the module from the machine.
  • Never allow welding cables to lie on, near, or across any electrical wiring or electronic component while you weld.
  • Always disconnect the negative cable from the battery when charging the battery in the machine with a battery charger.
  • If you must weld on the unit, disconnect the battery ground cable from the machine battery. The electronic monitoring system and charging system will be damaged if this is not done.
  • Remove the battery ground cable. Reconnect the cable when you complete welding.

Fluid and Fuel Management:

  • Hydraulic contamination: The manual details causes and solutions for hydraulic contamination, including cylinder rod seals that leak, control valve spools that do not return to neutral, hydraulic oil that becomes too hot, pump gears/housing/parts that wear rapidly, relief valves/check valves held open by dirt, quick failure of components that have been repaired, and slow cycle times. It also distinguishes between microscopic and visible contamination.
  • Biodiesel fuel: Specific guidelines for using biodiesel fuel, including blend percentages (B5, B100), storage, and potential issues like filter blockage and deterioration of rubber sealing compounds.
  • Engine coolant: Detailed instructions for using New Holland AMBRA ACTIFULL™ OT EXTENDED LIFE COOLANT, including mixing ratios, water quality requirements (Total Solids, Total Hardness, Chloride, Sulfate, Acidity pH), and warnings against using hard water or sea water.
  • Fuel: Guidelines for using Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (S10) and 2-D Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (S15), emphasizing the importance of proper fuel quality, high cetane number, low sulphur content, and proper storage to prevent contamination and wax crystals.

Disposal of Fluids, Lubricants, and Spare Parts:

  • Emphasizes environmentally responsible disposal of fluids, lubricants, filters, batteries, and other spare parts, advising consultation with NEW HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION dealers or local environmental agencies.

Safety Rules: The manual includes extensive safety warnings covering various aspects of operation and maintenance, such as:

  • Personal safety: General safety alert symbol, importance of reading safety messages, and warnings regarding danger, warning, and caution levels.
  • General information: Cleaning, inspection, bearing, gear, oil seal, shaft, service parts, and lubricants.
  • Preliminary warnings to maintenance operation: Warnings for avoiding injury, improper operation, pinch hazards, crushing hazards, heavy objects, and improper service.
  • Hydraulic system: Warnings about hot hydraulic fluid, pressurized fluid, and pressurized systems.
  • Battery: Warnings about sulfuric acid, battery gas explosion, and proper battery cable connection.
  • Fluids: Warnings about hazardous chemicals, burn hazards from hot coolant, and escaping hydraulic or diesel fuel.
  • Ecology and the environment: Guidelines for minimizing environmental impact, including proper disposal of batteries, fluids, and lubricants, and helpful hints for preventing spills and contamination.

The manual also provides detailed torque specifications for various components, conversion factors for different units of measurement, and temperature conversion tables to assist technicians in performing accurate and safe maintenance.
