Overview

The Nikon Laser Rangefinder, model LASER 30, is a portable optical instrument designed for measuring distances using an invisible laser beam. It is equipped with a red internal display for easy readability and features a Target Priority Switching System, allowing users to measure overlapping subjects by prioritizing either the closest (First Target Priority mode) or farthest (Distant Target Priority mode) target. The factory default setting for target priority is Distant Target Priority mode.

Key Features:

  • Optics: High-quality 6x monocular finder with multilayer coating and a larger ocular for comfortable viewing.
  • Measurement:
    • Single measurement: Initiated by a quick press of the PWR button. If measurement fails, it automatically continues for up to 4 seconds until a result is obtained.
    • Continuous measurement: Activated by pressing and holding the PWR button for up to approximately 8 seconds. The measured result is displayed consecutively while the laser emission mark flashes. Releasing the button stops continuous measurement.
  • Power Management: Automatic power shut-off after approximately 8 seconds of inactivity from the standby screen.
  • Durability: Waterproof (up to 1 m/3.3 ft for 10 minutes) and fogproof, though not designed for underwater usage. The battery chamber is rainproof (JIS/IEC protection class 4 (IPX4) equivalent).
  • Laser Safety: Invisible/Eyesafe EN/IEC Class 1M Laser.
  • Display Customization:
    • Internal display luminance (IL): Adjustable from IL 1 (darkest) to IL 5 (brightest), with an automatic setting (IL A) that adjusts to ambient brightness.
    • Distance display unit (F1): Selectable between yards (YD) and meters (m). Factory default is YD.
    • Measurement display mode (F2): Four modes are available: Horizontal distance and angle, Actual distance and angle, Horizontal distance and height, and Actual distance and height. The factory default is horizontal distance and angle mode.

Technical Specifications:

  • Measurement Range:
    • Actual distance: 7.3-1,460 m / 8-1,600 yd.
    • Angle: ±89°
  • Maximum Measurement Distance:
    • Tree: 1,140 m / 1,250 yd.
    • Deer: 1,000 m / 1,100 yd.
  • Display Increment:

    • Horizontal distance: every 0.1 m/yd.
    • Height: every 0.1 m/yd.
    • Angle: every 0.1°
  • Accuracy (actual distance):
    • ±0.5 m/yd. (shorter than 700 m/yd.)
    • ±1.0 m/yd. (700 m/yd. and over, shorter than 1,000 m/yd.)
    • ±1.5 m/yd. (1,000 m/yd. and over)
  • Magnification: 6x
  • Effective Diameter of Objective Lens: 21 mm
  • Angular Field of View (real): 7.5°
  • Eye Relief: 18.0 mm
  • Exit Pupil: 3.5 mm
  • Diopter Adjustment: ±4 m⁻¹
  • Dimensions (L × H × W): 96 x 74 x 42 mm / 3.8 x 2.9 × 1.7 in.
  • Weight: Approx. 175 g / 6.2 oz. (without battery)
  • Operating Temperature: -10 to +50°C / 14 to 122°F
  • Operating Humidity: 80% RH or less (without dew condensation)
  • Power Source: CR2 lithium battery × 1 (DC 3V). Battery life is approximately 8,500 times at 20°C (68°F).
  • Laser Classification: IEC60825-1: Class 1M/Laser Product, FDA/21 CFR Part 1040.10: Class I Laser Product.
  • Wavelength: 905 nm
  • Pulse Duration: 9.7 ns
  • Output: 33.8 W
  • Beam Divergence: Vertical: 0.25 mrad, Horizontal: 1.8 mrad

Usage Features:

  • Adjusting Focus: The diopter adjustment ring allows users to adjust the focus of the internal display for clear viewing.
  • Menu Navigation: The MODE button is used to navigate and change settings. A quick press (less than 1.5 seconds) is for switching options, while a press and hold (1.5 seconds or longer) is for entering or saving settings. The PWR button is used to confirm selections within the setting menus.
  • Battery Level Indicator: The internal display shows the battery status: sufficient power, low power (prepare to replace), very low power (replace immediately), and empty (blinks 3 times then powers off).
  • Measurement Accuracy Considerations: Measurement accuracy may vary due to climatic and environmental conditions, as well as target characteristics such as color, surface finish, size, shape, and reflectivity. Inaccurate measurements may occur in snow, rain, fog, with small, slender, black, dark, moving, or vibrating targets, when measuring water surfaces or through glass, or when the laser incidence to the target's reflective surface is oblique.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Lens: Remove dust with a blower. For fingerprints or stubborn stains, use a dry, soft cloth or eyeglasses cleaning cloth, wiping in a spiral motion from the center outwards. Avoid wiping too firmly or using hard materials. If necessary, use a cloth lightly dampened with commercial lens cleaner.
    • Main Body: Gently remove dust with a blower, then clean with a soft, clean cloth. After use in a seaside environment, wipe off salt with a damp, soft cloth, then dry. Avoid benzene, thinner, or organic solvents.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place to prevent water condensation or mold. After use in rainy conditions or at night, thoroughly dry the product at room temperature before storage.
  • Battery Care: Install the battery with correct polarity. Remove the battery when depleted or not in use for extended periods. Keep the battery away from fire or water, and do not disassemble or charge it. Avoid short-circuiting the battery terminals.
  • General Precautions: Do not subject the product to physical shock. If dropped or malfunctioning, consult a Nikon authorized service representative. Do not leave the product in unstable places, use it while walking, or swing it by the strap. Avoid direct sunlight on the eyepiece. Rubber parts may deteriorate over time; check their condition and consult Nikon if defects are found. Prolonged use of the rubber eyecup may cause skin inflammation.

Important Notes:

  • The carabiner-like ring provided with the case is for carrying the Laser Rangefinder only and should not be used for heavy loads or climbing.
  • The device is a basic rangefinder, and its measurement results cannot be used as official evidence.
  • Any dust visible in the enlarged internal display due to the eyepiece does not affect measurement accuracy.
  • The battery supplied with the device is for operation checking and may have a shorter life due to natural electrical discharge.
  • Do not operate or hold the product in running water. If moisture is found on movable parts, stop use and wipe it off.
  • The nitrogen-filled design makes it resistant to condensation and mold.
  • Do not attempt to repair or disassemble the product, as this may lead to serious incidents and voids Nikon's responsibility for any resulting damage.
