Overview

The Ninja Foodi DZ550 Series SMART XL 2-Basket Air Fryer is a versatile kitchen appliance designed for household use, offering a range of cooking functions and features to simplify meal preparation. This owner's guide provides comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring users can maximize its potential.

Function Description

The air fryer features DualZone™ Technology, which allows for two independent cooking zones, enabling users to cook different foods at varying temperatures and times simultaneously. This technology is particularly useful for preparing complete meals with synchronized finish times. The appliance offers several cooking functions:

  • Air Fry: This function is ideal for achieving crispiness and crunch with little to no oil, perfect for items like fries, chicken wings, or vegetables.
  • Bake: Designed for creating baked treats and desserts, such as cakes, cookies, or pastries.
  • Roast: Suitable for tenderizing meats and roasting vegetables, providing even cooking and browning.
  • Air Broil: Adds a crispy finishing touch to meals or melts toppings, creating a perfect caramelized or browned surface.
  • Reheat: Warms up leftovers, restoring their crispy texture and flavor.
  • Dehydrate: Used for making healthy snacks by dehydrating meats, fruits, and vegetables.

A key feature of this model is the integrated Foodi® Smart Thermometer, which allows for precise temperature control and ensures food is cooked to the desired doneness. The thermometer is used in Zone 1 and can be set for various protein types and doneness levels, automatically stopping the cooking process once the target internal temperature is reached.

Usage Features

The control panel is intuitively designed with distinct buttons for functions and operations.

  • Zone Selection: Dedicated buttons for Zone 1 (left basket) and Zone 2 (right basket) allow users to control each cooking zone independently.
  • Temperature and Time Adjustment: Left arrows are used to select desired cook temperature or protein type, while right arrows adjust cook time or doneness.
  • SMART FINISH Button: This feature automatically syncs the cook times of both zones, ensuring they finish simultaneously, even if they have different cooking settings. When activated, one zone may display "HOLD" while the other cooks, until the times align.
  • MATCH COOK Button: This button copies the settings from Zone 1 to Zone 2, ideal for cooking larger quantities of the same food or preparing different foods with identical cooking parameters.
  • PROBE Button: Used to select Small Preset, Large Preset, or Manual settings when utilizing the Foodi® Smart Thermometer.
  • POWER Button: Turns the unit on/off and stops all cooking functions. The unit enters standby mode after 10 minutes of inactivity, with the power button dimly lit.

Cooking with the Foodi® Smart Thermometer:

To use the thermometer, it must be inserted correctly into the thickest part of the protein, avoiding bone, fat, or gristle. The thermometer is stored in a compartment on the left side of the unit. Once plugged into the jack, users select the desired cooking function, protein type, and doneness level. The unit will display the current and target temperatures, automatically stopping when the desired doneness is achieved. It's important to allow the protein to rest after cooking, as it will continue to carry-over cook to its final doneness.

Cooking with DualZone™ Technology:

  • SMART FINISH (without thermometer): Place ingredients in baskets, select desired functions, temperatures, and times for each zone. Press SMART FINISH, then START/PAUSE. The unit will beep and activate the second zone when times sync.
  • MATCH COOK (without thermometer): Place ingredients, select desired function, temperature, and time for Zone 1. Press MATCH COOK, then START/PAUSE to begin cooking in both zones with identical settings.
  • Cooking with Two Zones (without Smart Finish or Match Cook): Select desired cook function, temperature, and time for each zone independently. The unit optimizes power distribution.

Cooking in a Single Zone:

To cook in a single zone, users select the desired zone, function (Air Fry, Bake, Roast, Air Broil, Reheat, Dehydrate), temperature, and time. The crisper plate should be installed in the basket for optimal results. During cooking, baskets can be removed to shake or toss ingredients for even crisping.

Pausing & Ending Cook Times:

Users can pause both zones simultaneously by pressing START/PAUSE. To pause a single zone during dual zone cooking, select the zone and press START/PAUSE. To end cooking in one zone while both are running, select the zone, set its time to zero using the down arrow, and press START/PAUSE.

Maintenance Features

Thorough cleaning after each use is crucial for maintaining the appliance.

  • Main Unit and Control Panel: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. NEVER immerse the main unit in water or any other liquid, and it is not dishwasher-safe.
  • Crisper Plates and Baskets: These are the ONLY dishwasher-safe parts. They can also be hand-washed with hot, soapy water, then rinsed and thoroughly dried. Hand-washing is recommended for baskets to extend their lifespan.
  • Foodi® Smart Thermometer: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. DO NOT place it in the dishwasher or immerse it in water or any other liquid.
  • Food Residue: For stubborn food residue, soak crisper plates or baskets in warm, soapy water.

Helpful Tips for Optimal Performance:

  • For consistent browning, arrange ingredients in an even layer without overlapping. Shake ingredients halfway through cooking.
  • When converting traditional oven recipes, reduce the temperature by 25°F.
  • To prevent lightweight foods from blowing around, secure them with wooden toothpicks.
  • Crisper plates elevate ingredients for even air circulation and crisp results.
  • For best results with fresh vegetables and potatoes, use at least 1 tablespoon of oil.
  • Monitor food progress and remove when desired brownness is achieved. An external food thermometer is recommended for checking internal temperatures of proteins.

The appliance is designed for indoor and household use only. It is important to follow all safety precautions, including ensuring proper assembly, avoiding contact with hot surfaces, and using the correct electrical outlet. The unit uses 1690 watts of power and should be plugged into a 15-amp circuit breaker.
