This document describes the Noctua NF-A8 PWM fan, a sound-optimised premium component designed in Austria.
The Noctua NF-A8 PWM is a premium cooling fan designed for use in computer systems, specifically for heatsinks, radiators, or as a case fan. Its primary function is to provide efficient airflow while maintaining low noise levels. It features a 4-pin PWM fan connector, enabling fully automatic speed control via a mainboard's 4-pin PWM fan headers. This allows the fan speed to be adjusted dynamically based on system temperature, optimising both cooling performance and acoustic output. The fan can also be connected to 3-pin fan headers, in which case it will run at full speed unless the mainboard supports voltage-based speed control. For systems requiring multiple NF-A8 fans, a supplied y-cable (NA-YC1) allows several fans to be connected to a single PWM fan header, ensuring they all run at the same speed.
The NF-A8 is renowned for its superb quietness, exceptional performance, and thoroughgoing quality. It boasts an impressive MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) rating of more than 150,000 hours, backed by a 6-year manufacturer's warranty. This high MTBF rating signifies the fan's outstanding longevity and reliability. The fan incorporates Noctua's premium grade SSO2 bearing, which is fully sealed to prevent the ingress of fine dust particles, further contributing to its long operational lifespan. The fan features a short 20cm primary cable, designed to minimise cable clutter in typical applications. For situations requiring extended reach, a 30cm extension cable (NA-EC1) is supplied. An included Low-Noise Adaptor (NA-RC7) allows users to reduce the fan speed from its maximum of 2200rpm down to 1750rpm. This adaptor can be used to set a fixed speed of 1750rpm (if speed control is deactivated) or to cap the maximum speed at 1750rpm during PWM speed control. Each Noctua fan undergoes a double check by the quality control team for flawless operation before leaving the factory.
The NF-A8 PWM is versatile in its installation. When used with a heatsink, radiator, or other devices that employ a custom fan installation mechanism (such as fan clips or proprietary screws), that mechanism should be used. For case fan installation, users have the option of using proprietary clip systems if their case supports them, or the supplied mounting screws and silicone anti-vibration mounts. To install with silicone mounts, the mounts are first pulled through the case's mounting holes, then the fan is placed onto the mounts, and finally, the mounts are pulled through the fan's mounting holes. The fan's integrated anti-vibration pads can be easily removed if necessary. The short primary cable helps in managing cable clutter, and the extension cable provides flexibility for various case layouts. The y-cable simplifies the connection of multiple fans to a single header, ensuring synchronised speed control. The Low-Noise Adaptor offers a simple way to achieve quieter operation by reducing the maximum fan speed.
Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain maximum performance of the NF-A8. Fans inside computer cases tend to accumulate dust over time. Users should clean their fans regularly using a duster, a slightly moist tissue, or canned air. Care must be taken not to apply excessive force during cleaning to prevent damage to the fan. Vacuum cleaners are explicitly advised against, as they may apply too much force. The fan's SSO2 bearing is fully sealed to prevent dust ingress, contributing to its long-term, flawless operation. It is important to note that the fan is not designed to be disassembled by the user. Attempting to remove the impeller from the frame will break the sealing of the bearing and will result in a loss of warranty. In case of any problems, Noctua offers a direct, fast, and straightforward RMA service, with a support team available via email (support@noctua.at).
