Overview

The Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway is a device designed to provide internet service over the Rogers mobile network, converting a wireless 5G signal into a WiFi signal accessible by your devices. This Quick Start Guide outlines the setup, usage, and maintenance of the gateway, ensuring a seamless transition to 5G internet.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway is to deliver high-speed internet connectivity. It acts as a bridge between the Rogers 5G mobile network and your local devices, whether connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The gateway receives the 5G signal and broadcasts it as a Wi-Fi network, allowing multiple devices to connect simultaneously. It is specifically designed for ongoing usage at a fixed service address, ensuring consistent performance. The device supports both 5G and, if 5G is unavailable, automatically connects to 4G/LTE networks. It is a data-only device, meaning it cannot be used to make voice calls or send/receive text messages.

Usage Features:

Initial Setup:

  1. Download the Nokia WiFi App: Before starting, download the Nokia WiFi App to your phone or tablet. This app is crucial for managing your gateway and network settings. Sign in using your MyRogers credentials.
  2. Insert the SIM Card: Ensure the device is powered off. Locate the SIM tray at the bottom of the device, remove it, place the SIM securely in the tray, and reinsert it.
  3. Scan QR Code: Use the Nokia WiFi App to scan the QR code located on the bottom of your device.
  4. Power On: Plug in the gateway and press the ON/OFF button. Wait 30-60 seconds for the device to power on and search for a 5G signal. LED lights on top of the device will indicate its status.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi: Use the default SSID and Wi-Fi key printed on the bottom of your gateway to connect your devices to the Wi-Fi network. Alternatively, you can connect via Ethernet using the two Gigabit Ethernet LAN connectors on the backside of the device. For Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), press the WPS button on the backside of the gateway.

Network Management with Nokia WiFi App:

The Nokia WiFi App provides comprehensive tools for managing your home network:

  • Check Network Health: The app allows you to monitor the overall status of your home network. It provides recommendations to improve Wi-Fi performance, such as extending network coverage or improving device connections.
  • Enable Guest Network: You can create a separate guest network, allowing visitors to access the internet without needing your main Wi-Fi name and password. This feature can be enabled, disabled, and shared via SMS or email through the app.
  • Parental Controls: Set up family profiles to restrict internet access for specific devices. You can block certain websites, set schedules for internet access, and group devices to apply restrictions simultaneously.
  • Schedules and Website Blocking: Create schedules to control when devices can access the internet and block specific websites for any profile.
  • Edit or Delete Wi-Fi Network (SSID): Easily change your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password through the app. After making changes, devices will need to reconnect using the new credentials. You can also delete a Wi-Fi network if needed.
  • Share Personal Wi-Fi Network: Share your network name and password with others via SMS, email, or other options directly from the app.

Signal Strength and Placement:

  • LED Indicators: The LED lights on top of the device provide visual feedback on signal strength:
    • Three (3) LEDs: Very good signal strength.
    • Two (2) LEDs: Good signal strength.
    • One (1) LED: Weak signal strength.
  • Optimizing Placement: For optimal signal strength, place the gateway in a higher location, close to a window or outer wall, with minimal obstructions. Avoid placing it in closets. The app can help identify areas for improvement.
  • Signal Test Button: A TEST button on the side of the gateway allows you to check signal strength at any time.
  • Troubleshooting Connectivity: If the 5G LED is lit and all three signal strength LEDs are lit, you have a good 5G connection. If the 5G LED isn't lit but all three signal strength LEDs are lit, you have a good 4G/LTE connection. If the 5G LED is lit with any other pattern, reposition the unit for a better connection.
  • Checking Center LED:
    • Slow blinking red: SIM card is missing or needs replacement.
    • Solid red: No 4G/LTE or 5G connection; reposition the gateway.
    • Solid green: Press the signal test button to determine service type (4G or 5G) and signal strength, then reposition if necessary.

Data Plan Management:

  • High-Speed Data: Your plan includes high-speed data up to a certain allotment, with video throttling speeds of up to 3Mbps (720p HD).
  • Reduced Speed: Once the high-speed data allotment is reached, you will continue to have access to data services at a reduced speed (up to 20 Mbps for downloads and 4Mbps for uploads) until the end of your billing cycle.
  • Speed Passes: Purchase Speed Passes via rogers.com or the MyRogers app to add more high-speed data to your plan at any time.
  • Usage Monitoring: Monitor your data usage online by logging into MyRogers or using the MyRogers app.

Maintenance Features:

Rebooting the Gateway:

  • Soft Reboot: To reboot the gateway while preserving all current configured settings, locate the reset button on the bottom of the device (next to the Nano SIM tray). Press the button for less than 5 seconds. The unit will reboot.

Resetting the Gateway (Factory Reset):

  • Hard Reset: To reset the gateway to its factory default settings and erase all configured settings, press the reset button for 5 seconds or more. The gateway may restart twice during a factory reset. After a factory reset, you will need to reconfigure your Wi-Fi network name and password.

Repositioning the Gateway:

  • If you need to move the gateway to a different location to improve signal strength:
    1. Power off the gateway and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.
    2. Move it to the new location.
    3. Connect it to an electrical outlet and power it on.
    4. Check the LED indicators for signal strength and follow any instructions provided. You may need to repeat this process several times to find the optimal location.

General Maintenance:

  • Ensure the device is powered off before inserting or removing the SIM card.
  • Keep the device visible, upright, and elevated for best performance.
  • Avoid rotating the gateway once a good connection is established, as this may affect internet speeds due to indoor signal reception conditions.

This comprehensive guide ensures users can effectively set up, manage, and maintain their Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway for a reliable internet experience.
