Overview

This document outlines the safety guidelines, usage features, maintenance tips, and warranty information for your Nokia RM-983 device.

For Your Safety

To ensure your safety and the proper functioning of your device, it's crucial to adhere to several guidelines. Always switch off your device in restricted areas, such as aircraft, hospitals, or near medical equipment, fuel, chemicals, or blasting areas, to prevent interference or danger. Road safety is paramount; always keep your hands free while driving and prioritize road safety above all else. Be aware that all wireless devices can be susceptible to interference, which may affect performance. For any repairs or installations, only qualified personnel should handle the product. Use only batteries, chargers, and other accessories approved by Microsoft Mobile for this device. Third-party chargers that comply with the IEC/EN 62684 standard and connect to your device's micro USB connector may be compatible, but avoid incompatible products. Your device is not water-resistant, so keep it dry. The device screen is made of glass, which can break if dropped or subjected to substantial impact. If the glass breaks, do not touch the broken parts or attempt to remove them; stop using the device until the glass is replaced by qualified service personnel. To prevent hearing damage, avoid listening at high volume levels for extended periods and exercise caution when using the speakerphone near your ear. This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used in the normal use position against the ear or when positioned at least 1.5 centimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body. When using a carry case, belt clip, or other device holder for body-worn operation, ensure it does not contain metal and provides at least the stated separation distance from the body. Remember that mobile devices may transmit even when not making a voice call.

Antenna Locations and Troubleshooting

To optimize performance, understand where the antennas are located on your phone. Avoid touching the antenna area while it's in use, as contact can affect communication quality and reduce battery life due to higher power levels during operation. The antenna areas are highlighted in the user guide. If you encounter issues with your phone, such as freezing, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take. To restart a frozen phone, press and hold the volume down key and power key simultaneously for about 10 seconds. If freezing persists, consider updating your phone software or resetting the device. Resetting will restore factory settings and erase all personal content, including downloaded apps. To reset, swipe down from the top of the start screen and tap ALL SETTINGS > about > reset your phone. If the issue remains unresolved, contact your network service provider or Microsoft Mobile for repair options. Always back up your data before sending your phone for repair, as all personal data may be deleted. To identify your phone, you can view its unique IMEI number by dialing *#06#.

Feature-Specific Information and Network Services

Using certain services or downloading content, even free items, may incur data costs due to large data transfers. Your device uses a nano-SIM card (nano-UICC card). Using incompatible SIM cards or SIM card adapters may damage the card or device and corrupt data. Only use compatible memory cards approved for this device, as incompatible cards can cause damage and data corruption. Characters with accents or other language options may take up more space, limiting the number of characters in a single message. Wi-Fi usage may be restricted in some countries; for example, in the EU, 5150-5350 MHz Wi-Fi is only allowed indoors, and in the USA and Canada, 5.15-5.25 GHz Wi-Fi is only allowed indoors. Consult local authorities for more information. To access the Windows Phone software license terms, go to Settings > about. By using the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the device or software and contact Microsoft Mobile or the vendor for return policy information.

Finding Your Model and Serial Number (IMEI)

If you need to contact Nokia Care or your service provider, you may need your phone's model and serial number (IMEI). To find this information, swipe down from the top of the start screen and tap ALL SETTINGS > about > More info. This information is also on your phone label, located under the back cover. You can also view your phone's IMEI by dialing *#06#.

Product and Safety Information

Your RM-983 device operates on LTE 700 (17), 850 (5), 1700 (4), 1900 (2), 2600 (7), Carrier Aggregation 4+17, 17+2; WCDMA 850, 900, 1800, 1900; and GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz networks. A subscription with a service provider is required. Some features and content downloads require a network connection and may incur data costs or require feature subscriptions. Your network service provider may collect and report Customer Proprietary Network Information, including technical configuration, type, destination, location, and usage amount of telecommunications services. Refer to the Privacy Page at www.nokia.com/privacy or contact your network service provider for more details. Note that 4G/LTE might not be supported by your network service provider or when traveling. In such cases, you may not be able to make/receive calls or messages, or use mobile data. To ensure seamless operation when full 4G/LTE service is unavailable, it's recommended to change the highest connection speed from 4G to 3G by going to Settings > cellular+SIM and switching Highest connection speed to 3G.

Making an Emergency Call

Emergency calls cannot be guaranteed in all conditions, so never rely solely on a wireless phone for essential communications like medical emergencies. To make an emergency call:

  1. Switch on the phone.
  2. If the screen and keys are locked, unlock them.
  3. Move to a location with adequate signal strength.
  4. Press, and tap > .
  5. Enter the official emergency number for your location (these vary by location).
  6. Tap call.
  7. Provide necessary information accurately and do not end the call until permitted. You may also need to:
  • Insert a SIM card (if you don't have one, tap emergency call when prompted about a missing SIM).
  • Tap emergency call if your phone asks for a PIN code.
  • Switch off restrictions like call restriction, fixed dialing, or closed user group.
  • Tap emergency call during initial account and phone setup if needed.
  • If the mobile network is unavailable, try making an internet call if you have internet access.

Taking Care of Your Device

Refer to the in-device user guide for detailed instructions on device care. Avoid dropping, knocking, or shaking the device or battery, as rough handling can cause damage.

Digital Rights Management

When using this device, respect all laws, local customs, privacy, and legitimate rights of others, including copyrights. Copyright protection may restrict copying, modifying, or transferring photos, music, and other content.

Battery and Charger Information

Use your device only with an original BV-L4A rechargeable battery. Charge your device with an AC-60U charger (charger plug type may vary). Third-party chargers complying with IEC/EN 62684 and connecting to your device's micro USB connector may be compatible. Microsoft Mobile may offer additional battery or charger models. Replace the battery only with one compliant with the IEEE-std-1725 standard. Use the battery only with a charging system qualified with the system per CTIA Certification Requirements for Battery System Compliance to IEEE 1725. The phone should only connect to CTIA certified adapters, USB-IF logo products, or products that have completed the USB-IF compliance program.

Battery and Charger Safety

Always switch off the device and unplug the charger before removing the battery. To unplug, hold and pull the plug, not the cord. Unplug the charger when not in use, as a fully charged battery loses charge over time. Keep the battery between 59°F and 77°F (15°C and 25°C) for optimal performance; extreme temperatures reduce capacity and lifetime. A device with a hot or cold battery may not function temporarily. Accidental short-circuiting can occur if metallic objects touch the battery's metal strips, potentially damaging the battery or object. Do not dispose of batteries in fire, as they may explode. Obey local regulations and recycle when possible; do not dispose as household garbage. Do not dismantle, cut, crush, bend, puncture, or damage the battery. If a battery leaks, avoid contact with skin or eyes; if contact occurs, immediately flush affected areas with water or seek medical help. Do not modify, insert foreign objects, immerse, or expose the battery to water or other liquids, as batteries may explode if damaged. Use the battery and charger only for their intended purposes. Improper use or use of unapproved/incompatible batteries or chargers may pose fire, explosion, or other hazards, and may invalidate approvals or warranty. If you suspect battery or charger damage, take it to a service center before continued use. Never use a damaged battery or charger. Use the charger indoors only. Do not charge during a lightning storm.

Small Children

Your device and its accessories are not toys and contain small parts. Keep them out of reach of small children.

Medical Devices

Radio transmitting equipment, including wireless phones, may interfere with inadequately shielded medical devices. Consult a physician or medical device manufacturer to determine if adequate shielding from external radio energy is present.

Implanted Medical Devices

To avoid potential interference, manufacturers of implanted medical devices recommend a minimum separation of 6 inches (15.3 centimeters) between a wireless device and the medical device. If you have such devices, you should:

  • Always keep the wireless device more than 6 inches (15.3 centimeters) from the medical device.
  • Not carry the wireless device in a breast pocket.
  • Hold the wireless device to the ear opposite the medical device.
  • Turn off the wireless device if interference is suspected.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions for the implanted medical device. If you have questions about using your wireless device with an implanted medical device, consult your healthcare provider.

Information on Health

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have published statements and FAQs on mobile phones and health. Microsoft Mobile encourages visiting these websites for updated information: www.fda.gov/RadiationEmittingProducts/RadiationEmittingProductsandProcedures/HomeBusinessandEntertainment/CellPhones/default.htm and transition.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/rf-faqs.html. Additional health information is available from the World Health Organization (WHO) at www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs193/en/ and The National Cancer Institute ("NCI") www.cancer.gov/ncicancerbulletin/NCI_Cancer_Bulletin_092308/page7. If concerned about health effects, the FDA suggests limiting radio frequency (RF) exposure by reducing call length or using handsfree devices.

Vehicles

Radio signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in vehicles. Consult your vehicle manufacturer for more information. Only qualified personnel should install the device in a vehicle; faulty installation can be dangerous and invalidate your warranty. Regularly check that all wireless device equipment in your vehicle is properly mounted and operating. Do not store or carry flammable or explosive materials in the same compartment as the device, its parts, or accessories. Do not place your device or accessories in the air bag deployment area.

Safety and Texting While Driving

Driver safety is paramount. Obey all local laws regarding mobile phone use while driving. If legal, keep your hands free and use a handsfree device. Suspend calls in heavy traffic or hazardous weather. Familiarize yourself with your phone's features and input necessary information before driving. Do not input data or text while driving. Mobile phones should not be used if they distract the driver. The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) provides further information and tips on safe cellular phone use at www.ctia.org/consumer_info/safety.

Potentially Explosive Environments

Switch off your device in potentially explosive environments, such as near gas station pumps, as sparks can cause explosions or fires resulting in injury or death. Observe restrictions in areas with fuel, chemical plants, or blasting operations. Potentially explosive environments may not be clearly marked but are typically areas where you are advised to switch off your engine, such as below deck on boats, chemical transfer/storage facilities, and areas where the air contains chemicals or particles. Consult manufacturers of vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (e.g., propane or butane) regarding safe device use in their vicinity.

Certification Information (SAR)

This mobile device complies with international guidelines for exposure to radio waves. Your cellular phone is a radio transmitter and receiver, designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio waves (radio frequency electromagnetic fields) recommended by international guidelines from the independent scientific organization ICNIRP. These guidelines include substantial safety margins to protect all persons regardless of age and health. Exposure guidelines are based on the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which measures the amount of RF power deposited in the head or body when the device transmits. The ICNIRP SAR limit for mobile devices is 2.0 W/kg averaged over 10 grams of tissue. SAR tests are conducted with the device in standard operating positions, transmitting at its highest certified power level across all frequency bands. The maximum recorded SAR values for this device are:

  • When held against the head: 0.35 W/kg over 10g (GPRS 900 and WLAN 2450)
  • When operated at a separation distance of 1.5 centimeters (5/8 inch) from the body: 0.63 W/kg over 10g (LTE 1700/2100 and WLAN 2450)

Your mobile device also meets United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Industry Canada (IC) SAR guidelines. FCC ratings and more SAR information can be found at transition.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/sar.html. IC SAR information is available at www.ic.gc.ca. This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used against the head or at least 1.5 centimeters (5/8 inch) from the body. For body-worn operation, a carry case, belt clip, or other device holder should not contain metal and must provide at least the stated separation distance. To send data or messages, a good network connection is required; sending may be delayed until available. Follow separation distance instructions until sending is complete. During general use, SAR values are typically well below the maximum values because the device's operating power automatically decreases when full power is not needed for a call, minimizing network interference. Lower power output results in lower SAR values. Device models may have different versions and values; component and design changes can affect SAR values. The latest SAR information for Nokia devices is available at www.nokia.com/sar. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that current scientific information does not indicate a need for special precautions with mobile devices. If you wish to reduce exposure, limit usage or use a hands-free kit to keep the device away from your head and body. For more information on RF exposure, visit the WHO website at www.who.int/peh-emf/en.

Nokia - Manufacturer's Limited Warranty

General

Nokia Inc., a subsidiary of Microsoft Mobile Oy, provides this Manufacturer's Limited Warranty ("Warranty") for genuine products ("Product") sold in the United States of America. Nokia Products Limited, a subsidiary of Microsoft Mobile Oy, provides this Warranty for Products sold in Canada ("Covered Countries") since September 15, 2014. "Manufacturer" refers to either Nokia Inc. or Nokia Products Limited. If you reside or your business is in the United States, Section 6 contains a binding arbitration clause and class action waiver, affecting your rights on how to resolve disputes with the Manufacturer. Please read it. This warranty grants specific legal rights, and you may have other rights varying by State or Province.

  8. If your Product's serial number, mobile accessory date code, or IMEI number has been removed, erased, defaced, altered, or is illegible;
  9. If you have not installed the latest publicly available software updates for your Product within a reasonable time; or
  10. If you refuse to give possession of the Product to Manufacturer for repair and investigation. If this Warranty does not cover your Product or the issue, the Manufacturer reserves the right to charge for repair or replacement, plus a handling fee.

Limitation of Manufacturer's Liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law(s), the Manufacturer is not liable, expressly or implicitly, for any:

  1. Damages or losses of any kind resulting from or relating to loss of, damage to, or corruption of content or data, or the recreation or transfer thereof, even if such loss, damage, or corruption resulted from a defect in your Product; and/or
  2. Loss of profit, products or functionality, business, contracts, revenues or anticipated savings, increased costs or expenses, or for any indirect, consequential, or special loss or damage. To the extent permitted by applicable law(s), the Manufacturer's liability is limited to the purchase value of your Product.

Choice of Law

The laws of the State or Province where you live (or if a business, your principal place of business) govern the interpretation of this warranty, any claim that Manufacturer has breached it, and all other claims (including consumer protection, unfair competition, implied warranty, and tort claims), regardless of conflict of law principles, except that the Federal Arbitration Act governs all provisions relating to arbitration.

Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver If You Live In (or if a Business Your Principal Place of Business Is In) the United States

This section applies to any dispute EXCEPT disputes relating to the enforcement or validity of your, Manufacturer's, or either your or Manufacturer's licensor's intellectual property rights. "Dispute" means any dispute, action, or other controversy between you and Manufacturer concerning the Product (including its price) or this warranty, whether in contract, warranty, tort, statute, regulation, ordinance, or any other legal or equitable basis. "Dispute" will be given the broadest possible meaning allowable under law.

  1. Notice of Dispute. In the event of a dispute, you or Manufacturer must provide the other with a Notice of Dispute, a written statement containing the name, address, and contact information of the party giving it, the facts giving rise to the dispute, and the requested relief. Send any Notice of Dispute by U.S. Mail to Nokia Inc., ATTN: LCA ARBITRATION, One Microsoft Way, Redmond WA 98052-6399. A form is available at go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=245499. Manufacturer will send any Notice of Dispute to your address if available, or otherwise to your email address. You and Manufacturer will attempt to resolve disputes through informal negotiation within 60 days of the Notice of Dispute being sent. After 60 days, you or Manufacturer may commence arbitration.
  2. Small Claims Court. You may also litigate any dispute in small claims court in your county of residence (or if a business, your principal place of business) or King County, Washington, if the dispute meets all requirements for small claims court. You may litigate in small claims court whether or not you negotiated informally first.
  3. Binding Arbitration. If you and Manufacturer do not resolve any dispute by informal negotiation or in small claims court, any other effort to resolve the dispute will be conducted exclusively by individual binding arbitration governed by the Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA"). Class arbitrations are not permitted. You waive the right to litigate disputes in court before a judge or jury (or participate as a party or class member). Instead, all disputes will be resolved before a neutral arbitrator, whose decision is final except for a limited right of appeal under the FAA. Any court with jurisdiction over the parties may enforce the arbitrator's award.
  4. Class Action Waiver. Any proceedings to resolve or litigate any dispute in any forum will be conducted solely on an individual basis. Neither you nor Manufacturer will seek to have any dispute heard as a class action, private attorney general action, or in any other proceeding where either party acts or proposes to act in a representative capacity. No arbitration or other proceeding will be combined with another without the prior written consent of all parties to all affected arbitrations or proceedings.
  5. Arbitration Procedure. Any arbitration will be conducted by the American Arbitration Association (the "AAA") under its Commercial Arbitration Rules. If you are an individual using the Manufacturer Product for personal or household use, or if the dispute value is $75,000 or less (regardless of individual status or product use), the AAA's Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes will also apply. For more information, visit www.adr.org or call 1-800-778-7879. To commence arbitration, submit the form available at go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=245497 to the AAA. You agree to commence arbitration only in your county of residence (or if a business, your principal place of business) or in King County, Washington. Manufacturer agrees to commence arbitration only in your county of residence (or if a business, your principal place of business). You may request a telephonic or in-person hearing by following AAA rules. In disputes of $10,000 or less, any hearing will be telephonic unless the arbitrator finds good cause for an in-person hearing. The arbitrator may award the same damages to you individually as a court could, and may award declaratory or injunctive relief only to you individually, to the extent required to satisfy your individual claim.
  6. Arbitration Fees and Payments. (a) Disputes Involving $75,000 or Less. Manufacturer will promptly reimburse your filing fees and pay the AAA's and arbitrator's fees and expenses. If you reject Manufacturer's last written settlement offer before arbitrator appointment ("Manufacturer's last written offer"), your dispute goes to an arbitrator's decision ("award"), and the arbitrator awards you more than Manufacturer's last written offer, Manufacturer will: (i) pay the greater of the award or $1,000; (ii) pay twice your reasonable attorney's fees, if any; and (iii) reimburse any expenses (including expert witness fees and costs) your attorney reasonably accrues for investigating, preparing, and pursuing your claim in arbitration. The arbitrator will determine fees, costs, and expenses unless agreed upon. (b) Disputes Involving More Than $75,000. AAA rules govern payment of filing fees and AAA/arbitrator fees and expenses. (c) Disputes Involving Any Amount. In any arbitration you commence, Manufacturer will seek AAA or arbitrator's fees and expenses, or reimbursed filing fees, only if the arbitrator finds the arbitration frivolous or brought for an improper purpose. In any arbitration Manufacturer commences, Manufacturer will pay all filing, AAA, and arbitrator's fees and expenses. Manufacturer will not seek attorney's fees or expenses from you in any arbitration. Fees and expenses are not counted in determining dispute amount.

Conflict with AAA Rules

This warranty governs to the extent it conflicts with AAA's Commercial Arbitration Rules and Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes.

Claims or Disputes Must Be Filed Within One Year

To the extent permitted by law, any claim or dispute under Section 6 must be filed within one year in small claims court, an arbitration proceeding, or court (if Section 6 permits court filing instead of arbitration). The one-year period begins when the claim or Notice of Dispute could first be filed. Failure to file within one year permanently bars the claim or dispute.

Severability

If the class action waiver in Section 6.4 is found illegal or unenforceable for all or some parts of a dispute, Section 6 will not apply to those parts. Instead, those parts will be severed and proceed in court, with remaining parts proceeding in arbitration. If any other Section 6 provision is found illegal or unenforceable, that provision will be severed, with the remainder of Section 6 remaining in full force and effect.
