Overview

This document describes the LP & High Altitude LP Gas Conversion Kit for MG2S Series Furnaces & Appliances Using Honeywell Gas Valves, specifically for installations in Canada.

Function Description:

This kit is designed to convert natural gas furnaces and appliances to operate on LP (Liquid Propane) gas. It is specifically intended for MG2S Series furnaces equipped with Honeywell gas valves. The conversion process involves replacing key components to adapt the appliance for LP gas, including burner orifices and internal gas valve components (springs and adjustment screws). It also addresses adjustments to manifold pressure necessary for safe and efficient operation with LP gas, especially at various altitudes. The kit ensures that the converted appliance complies with Canadian electrical and gas piping codes (CGA B149.1 and CSA C22.1).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: MG2S Series Furnaces & Appliances using Honeywell Gas Valves (specifically Honeywell Conversion Kit 50033841 for VR9205Q1127).
  • Fuel Type Conversion: Natural Gas to LP/Propane Gas.
  • Altitude Range: Designed for installations at altitudes between 0 and 4,500 feet above sea level.
  • Components: The kit includes various drill-size burner orifice kits (e.g., #48, #49, #51, #59, 1.1mm, 1.2mm, 1.25mm) tailored for different Btu models (e.g., 39,000, 45,000, 60,000, 72,000 Btuh). It also contains specific springs and adjustment screws for the gas valve's HIGH and LOW fire regulators, a Torx-25 wrench (or requires a 3/16" flathead screwdriver), a Conversion Warning Label, a Conversion Information Label, and Installation Instructions.
  • Manifold Pressure (LP/Propane Gas):
    • 0 to 1,999 FT Altitude:
      • 39,000 BTU: HIGH 10.0 In. W.C., LOW 4.2 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.1mm)
      • 57,000 BTU: HIGH 10.0 In. W.C., LOW 4.2 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.25mm)
      • 63,000 BTU: HIGH 10.0 In. W.C., LOW 4.2 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.2mm)
    • 2,000 to 4,500 FT Altitude:
      • 39,000 BTU: HIGH 8.5 In. W.C., LOW 3.8 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.1mm)
      • 57,000 BTU: HIGH 8.5 In. W.C., LOW 3.8 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.25mm)
      • 63,000 BTU: HIGH 8.5 In. W.C., LOW 3.8 In. W.C. (Orifice Size 1.2mm)
  • Incoming Gas Line Pressure (LP/Propane): 11.0-14.0 inches Water Column.
  • Safety Labels: Includes a conversion warning label (P/N 703935) for the unit door, a conversion information label (P/N 711298) for the control area near the rating plate, and a gas valve conversion label for the gas valve itself.

Usage Features:

  • Step-by-step Conversion Process: The manual provides detailed instructions for converting the gas valve, removing and installing burner orifices, and adjusting gas pressure.
  • Gas Valve Conversion: Involves removing the HIGH and LOW fire cap screws, discarding the original adjustment screws and springs, installing larger springs from the kit, and then installing new adjustment screws from the kit.
  • Burner Orifice Replacement: Requires careful removal of existing orifices and installation of appropriate LP/Propane gas burner orifices, ensuring the correct drill number is used for the specific Btu model and altitude.
  • Gas Pressure Adjustment: Involves measuring supply gas pressure at the inlet pressure tap and manifold pressure at the manifold pressure tap using a manometer or similar gauge. Adjustments are made to both HIGH and LOW fire settings using the provided Torx-25 wrench.
  • Lighting and Adjustment of Appliance: Includes steps for turning on gas and electrical power, setting the thermostat, checking for proper ignition and flame appearance (blue flame with light yellow streaks), and verifying all gas connections for leaks using a soap solution.
  • High Altitude Derating: For installations at altitudes between 2,000 and 4,500 feet, the furnace input rating must be derated, which is achieved through specific burner orifices and manifold pressure adjustments as outlined in the conversion chart. Drilling out orifices in the field is strictly prohibited.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes critical safety warnings throughout, including the need for qualified installers, proper handling of gas and electrical connections, not using open flames for leak detection, and immediate action in case of a gas smell.

Maintenance Features:

  • Post-Installation Checks: After conversion, the appliance must be run through three complete cycles to ensure proper operation.
  • Documentation: The installation instructions are to be returned to the Homeowner's Package for future reference by the owner-user.
  • Labeling: All conversion labels must be prominently visible after installation to indicate the appliance's converted status and specifications.
  • No Alteration of Original Rating Plate: The original furnace rating plate must not be altered or removed.
