Overview

This document describes the NorthStar 24-Ton Log Splitter, Model M5044310B, a hydraulic-powered machine designed for splitting wood logs.

Function Description:

The log splitter is designed to split wood logs lengthwise with the grain only. It can operate in either a horizontal or vertical splitting position. The horizontal position is used for lighter logs that are easily loaded onto the beam, while the vertical position is suitable for heavier logs that are difficult to load. The machine utilizes a high-pressure hydraulic system, pressurized by its motor, to generate a strong splitting force.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Item Number: 5044310

  • Hydraulic Oil Capacity: 8 GAL
  • Coupler Size: 2" Ball
  • Maximum Towing Speed: 45 MPH
  • Overall Dimensions (LxWxH): 90" x 45" x 45"
  • Dry Weight: 750 LB
  • Volts: 57.6V Nominal (60V Max)
  • Amp Rating: 30 Ah
  • Charge Time: 3.5 hours

Usage Features:

  • Operating Positions: Can be configured for horizontal or vertical splitting. The beam can be rotated into the vertical position by pulling out a horizontal lock catch pin and lifting the handle.
  • Log Loading: Logs should be placed on the beam with a cut end against the endplate, positioned for a lengthwise cut. It is crucial to hold logs by the bark side, never the ends, and keep hands clear of the wedge, endplate, and partially split logs.
  • Split Control Lever: Used to extend the wedge for splitting and to return it. Releasing the lever stops wedge movement. The wedge is designed to return automatically once actuated in the return direction.
  • ECO Mode: An optional feature that, when activated, will shut off the motor if the log splitter is left inactive for 30 seconds, helping to conserve battery power. The motor can be restarted by pushing the main power switch back to the 'on' position.
  • Battery System: The log splitter is powered by a 60V/30Ah Li-Ion battery (item #5043106) and charged with a NorthStar Charger (item #5050015). The battery is installed in a battery box on the machine.
  • Towing: The log splitter is towable with a 2" ball hitch and has a maximum towing speed of 45 mph. It must be locked in the horizontal position with the jack in the DOWN position and the rear outrigger leg in the UP position for towing. Safety chains must be attached and crossed under the coupler.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes reading and understanding all safety information. Key warnings include crush and cut hazards from moving parts, high-pressure hydraulic fluid hazards (can puncture skin and cause severe blood poisoning), electrical hazards (use only specified battery/charger, avoid wet environments, extreme temperatures, and damage), and fire hazards (keep a fire extinguisher nearby). Operators must wear eye protection, hearing protection, snug-fitting gloves, and safety shoes. Only one person should operate the splitter, and assistants must be at least 10 feet away when controls are actuated.
  • Stuck Log Removal: If a log becomes stuck, the wedge should be retracted completely to allow the splitter to strip the log. Manual removal with a pry bar or sledgehammer is recommended after turning off the engine/motor. Modifying the splitter or adding attachments for removal is strictly prohibited.

Maintenance Features:

  • Initial Setup: Requires adding 8 gallons of 10wt AW32, ASLE H-150, or ISO 32 hydraulic oil to the reservoir. The system needs to be purged of air by extending and retracting the wedge five times. Grease zerks under the keepers must be lubricated.
  • Before Each Use:
    • Inspection/Maintenance: Always shut off the motor, relieve system pressure by moving the split control lever back and forth several times, and disconnect the battery before inspection or repair.
    • Debris Removal: Clean debris from the motor, slide beam, wedge, and endplate to prevent excess wear.
    • Mechanical Parts: Check all nuts and bolts for tightness.
    • Greasing: Apply grease to the zerks under both keepers.
    • Hydraulic System: Visually inspect all hoses, tubing, clamps/fittings, pump, and cylinder for damage or oily residue. Never check for leaks with bare hands; use cardboard or wood. Do not adjust pump or valve pressure settings.
    • Hydraulic Oil Level: Check oil level using the dipstick (do not thread in when checking). Fill as needed. Never remove the dipstick when the motor is on due to hot oil hazard.
    • Tires: Ensure tires are fully inflated and in good repair if towing. Do not over-inflate.
    • Shields/Guards: Ensure all guards and shields are in place.
  • Work Site Selection: Choose a dry, level surface with good footing, clear of mud, ice, tall grass, weeds, brush, or snow. Keep a fire extinguisher rated "ABC" nearby. Lock the jack and outrigger leg in the DOWN position and block the wheels to prevent unintended movement.
  • Periodic Maintenance:
    • Hydraulic Oil Change: Annually or every 100 hours. This involves draining the old oil, cleaning the suction strainer, and refilling with new oil. The system needs to be purged of air after refilling.
    • Battery Care: Store the battery indoors in a cool, dry, ventilated environment. Unplug from the charger. Keep the charge above 50% and charge at least once every three months. Do not stack items on top of the battery.
  • Storage: Retract the wedge completely to protect the rod from corrosion. Allow the machine to cool for 5 minutes. Wipe the beam and wedge with an oily rag to prevent corrosion. Charge the battery and store it indoors.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting section with solutions for common issues like the wedge not moving, motor not turning on, or slow wedge speed, often related to hydraulic oil levels, air in the system, or control valve issues. It emphasizes that only manufacturer-specified parts should be used for replacements to avoid safety hazards and poor operation.
