The MRXBOX95-WM1 series of mechanical ventilation units with heat recovery (MVHR) are designed for wall mounting and provide both supply and extract ventilation. These units are equipped with two independent fans, each offering full-speed control for both background and boost ventilation rates. A key feature is the heat exchanger block, which recovers heat from the extracted air, achieving up to 95% efficiency in recovering normally wasted heat. For models with integral automatic summer bypass (AB models only), a wax actuator automatically opens a bypass damper, allowing fresh filtered air to bypass the heat exchanger during warmer months.
The primary function of the MRXBOX95-WM1 units is to maintain optimal indoor air quality by continuously supplying fresh, filtered air and extracting stale air, while simultaneously recovering heat. This process ensures a comfortable indoor environment and reduces heating costs. The units are designed to extract air from wet rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens, en-suites, and utility rooms, and supply air to habitable rooms like bedrooms and lounges. The system is intended to operate continuously to maintain ventilation within the dwelling, as turning it off can lead to long-term damage to the unit and building fabric.
The MRXBOX95-WM1 units are specifically designed for wall mounting on solid walls. For non-solid wall installations, a minimum 25mm thick MDF panel solidly fixed behind the plasterboard is required to ensure stability. The mounting bracket, supplied with the unit, facilitates secure installation. Ducting should be rigid and installed to minimize resistance to airflow, with bends kept to a minimum and a distance of at least 300mm between the appliance and any bends. Insulation of outside air inlet and outlet ducts is crucial to prevent condensation. Adjustable valve-type grilles are recommended for both extract and input, and external grilles must have a minimum free area of 12,250 sq. mm.
The unit's electrical supply and connection must be performed by a qualified electrician, adhering to the latest wiring regulations. All-pole disconnection from the mains, with a minimum contact separation of 3mm, must be incorporated into the fixed wiring. The unit must be earthed, and ducting securely fixed to prevent access to live parts. Precautions are necessary to prevent back-flow of gases from open flues of gas or other fuel-burning appliances into the room.
The MVHR system is sized for winter operation, with provisions for purge ventilation (e.g., openable windows) expected to be used during warmer months. The unit's status is indicated by a series of LEDs on the front cover, providing information on normal mode, boost, fan faults, frost protection, filter change, and summer bypass (for AB units). The unit control panel will not display when a higher speed setting is triggered by an external source.
Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and energy efficiency of the MRXBOX95-WM1 units. Filters must be inspected every 6 months and replaced every 12 months, or sooner if required. A flashing LED on the control panel indicates when a filter change is due, repeating every 12 months and turning off automatically after 5 days. To change filters, the circular tabs on either end of the filter covers on the front panel are gripped and pulled away, allowing access to the filters which can then be extracted using the black removal loop.
Prior to commissioning, the plastic film protecting the filters must be removed. Commissioning involves ensuring the correct airflow rates are met, preventing over-ventilation and excessive power consumption. This process should be carried out using a calibrated moving vane anemometer and hood. Once commissioned, adjustment valves should be locked in place to prevent further tampering, and the clear panel covering the control should be sealed to prevent unauthorized adjustments.
The unit is not intended for use during site construction or clean-up periods, as cement and plaster dust can abrade components and affect fan performance. If the property is drying out, high moisture levels are expected, and the unit should be left running once installation and building works are complete. If works are incomplete, air valves should be closed or covered to prevent condensation in the ductwork and the MVHR unit.
In the event of a damaged supply cord, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons using a cord of the same or greater technical specification. The unit is designed with components that are largely recyclable at the end of its life, with various parts segregated into WEEE recycling streams, mixed plastics, and other materials. Before dismantling, the unit must be made safe from any electrical, water, or refrigerant supplies, with this work performed by a qualified person.
