Overview

The OMRON Model FL-STC is a lighting controller designed for image processing lighting controllers. It offers precise control over various lighting conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial automation and inspection applications.

Function Description

The FL-STC controller provides three primary lighting modes: Continuous (CONT), External Trigger (TRIG), and Strobe (STB).

  • Continuous Mode (CONT): In this mode, the lighting is continuously ON. Users can adjust the lighting level from 1 (MIN) to 399 (ALL MAX) using a cross key interface. The digital value displayed on the controller is synchronized with the actual light intensity, allowing for real-time adjustments. The system automatically saves the set value after 5 seconds of inactivity.

  • External Trigger Mode (TRIG): This mode enables lighting to be controlled by an external trigger input. Similar to continuous mode, the lighting level can be adjusted from 1 (MIN) to 399 (ALL MAX). The digital value is synchronized with light intensity, and settings are automatically saved. The timing chart for TRIG mode illustrates that the light emits during the "Pulse ON time" (Tpulse-on) after a "Pulse delay time" (Tdelay) following the trigger input (TRIG1/TRIG2 ON). The pulse is ignored if the light is already emitting. Emission delay can be set from 0-999ms, and emission time from 0.1-99.9ms (or "ALL" for continuous emission during trigger ON).

  • Strobe Mode (STB): This mode provides lighting that is approximately two times brighter than the other modes, also controlled by an external trigger. The strobe settings include "Pulse ON time" (Pon) from 0.1ms to 99.9ms, "Pulse Delay time" from 0ms to 999ms, and a "Strobe setting" from 0.01ms to 5.00ms. The timing chart for STB mode shows a "Strobe ON time" and an "Invalid period of re-trigger input," which is 12 times the strobe time. For 2-channel controllers, if one channel is set to STB mode, the other channel automatically switches to STB mode.

The device also features a Memory Function (MEM), which is particularly useful for external control. When set to "ON," data is stored in FLASH (nonvolatile) memory, retaining settings even after power loss. Data saving requires approximately 2 seconds, and a minimum interval of 2 seconds is needed between a "SAVE" signal and the next "TRIG" signal. When set to "OFF," data is stored in RAM (volatile) memory, reverting to the last saved data upon power off.

A Key Lock Function is available to prevent accidental changes to settings. By pushing the CH/ENT key for 5 seconds in CONT or TRIG mode, all settings are locked. In this state, only the light intensity value display for each channel can be changed. To release the key lock, the CH/ENT key must be pushed again for 5 seconds.

Important Technical Specifications

The FL-STC series offers various models, including FL-STC10, FL-STC10S, FL-STC20, and FL-STC20S, differing primarily in the number of lighting channels (1 or 2 channels) and lighting controller type (standard or strobe).

  • Power Supply: 24 VDC ±10%
  • Current Consumption:
    • FL-STC10/FL-STC10S: Max 300 mA (lighting excluded)
    • FL-STC20/FL-STC20S: Max 400 mA (lighting excluded)
  • Lighting Control:
    • Continuous: Lighting ON continuously.
    • Trigger: Lighting ON only when TRIG1/TRIG2 are ON.
    • Strobe: Lighting ON only when TRIG1/TRIG2 are ON (approx. 2 times brighter).
  • Method: PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control (0-399 steps).
  • Storage: Stores data in FLASH memory (nonvolatile) (approx. 2 seconds required for data saving).
  • Luminance Key: Sets luminance value by D9-D1, 9-bit binary data (range 1-400).
  • Strobe Key: Sets strobe lighting time by D9-D1, 9-bit binary data (range 0.01-5.00ms).
  • External Trigger/External Trigger (TRIG1/TRIG2) Input:
    • Input voltage: 5 VDC/12 VDC/24 VDC.
    • Input current: 5 mA/12 mA/24 mA.
  • Ambient Temperature: Operating 0 to 40°C, Storage -15 to 60°C (with no icing or condensation).
  • Ambient Humidity: Operating 35 to 85% RH, Storage 35 to 85% RH (with no icing or condensation).
  • Degree of Protection: Main unit: IP40 (IEC60529), Terminal block: IP00 (IEC60529).
  • Weight: Main unit: approx. 177g, Terminal block: approx. 18g.

Usage Features

  • Installation: The device can be installed on a DIN rail. The terminal block is detachable for easier wiring. It is crucial to connect the power supply correctly, ensuring the positive terminal is connected to +24V and the negative to 0V. Incorrect wiring can damage the unit.
  • Wiring: The manual provides detailed wiring diagrams for power supply, external trigger, and parallel input/output. It emphasizes using a parallel connector (XW4B-02B1-H1) for parallel input and output, and a parallel connector (XW4B-04B1-H1) for parallel input.
  • Parallel Input for Lighting Level Setting: The controller supports lighting level setting via parallel input. This allows for changing the light intensity value in CONT/TRIG modes and strobe emission time in STB mode using D1-D9 binary data. The SEL input selects the channel (OFF: CH1, ON: CH2), and the SAVE input fixes the value.
  • Error Messages: The device provides error messages (Er1-Er7) to indicate issues such as overcurrent (Er1-Er3), write errors by parallel input (Er4), no light connected (Er5-Er6), or overvoltage from the power supply (Er7). Each error message comes with a recommended recovery action, typically involving shutting down the controller, checking wiring and light conditions, and then restarting.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: To ensure the safety of operation and maintenance, the device must be installed and maintained by qualified personnel. For cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use thinner, benzene, acetone, or kerosene, as these can damage the product.
  • Troubleshooting: The error message system (Er1-Er7) assists in diagnosing and resolving common issues. If an error persists despite following the recommended recovery actions, it may indicate a defect in the product (light or controller), requiring further inspection or replacement.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual outlines crucial safety precautions, including warnings against electric shock, fire, and product damage. It advises against disassembling, modifying, or repairing the product, and warns against touching the terminal block while power is supplied. It also emphasizes the importance of proper wiring and avoiding looking directly at the light during mode changes, as it may flash.
