1.4.2 Upgrading the software
Some devices are equipped with boot, loader and application software, while others only have boot and
application software:
• The boot software takes care of the initial phase in the start-up sequence of the device. It is located
on the lowest software level.
• The loader software takes care of the second phase in the start-up sequence of the device. It is
located on the middle software level.
• The application software, also called control software or firmware, completely controls the device. It
is located on the highest software level.
