Cutter Adjustment
The 2100 will arrive with the cutter preset from the factory.
However, the cutter can be adjusted to accomodate differ-
ent mail thicknesses by turning the Cutter Adjustment Screw
(which can be accessed through the access hole- See pic
below). Turn off power to the 2100. Insert the supplied 5/32”
long-arm hex wrench through the small hole and engage the
Cutter Adjustment Screw. Turning the Cutter Adjustment Screw
clockwise will increase the depth of cut, turning the screw
counter-clockwise will decrease the depth of cut.
Upper Transport Cover Removal/Replacement
The Upper Transport Cover (See Pic Below) may be removed
to facilitate cleaning of the 2100. To remove the Upper Trans-
port Cover, turn the machine off. Grasp the right end of the
Upper Transport Cover, pull upwards and remove. Reverse the
procedure to re-install the Upper Transport Cover. The 2100
will not operate until the Upper Transport Cover is properly
installed.
Maintenance
Cleaning the 2100

for thick envelopes or slightly below the belt level for thin enve-
lopes.
1. Place yourself eye level with the belt and stones.
2. Find the access hole for adjusting screw in the centre
of the letter tray plate in the feed hopper (See pic in

Overview

The Opex Omation 2100 Letter Opener is a device designed for efficiently opening and counting mail. It offers both cutting and non-cutting modes, allowing for flexibility in mail processing.

Function Description

The primary function of the Omation 2100 is to open envelopes by cutting a thin strip from one edge. It can also count individual pieces of mail, whether opened or not. The device features a "Cut/No Cut" selector knob, enabling users to choose between opening mail and simply counting it. The counter maintains its total even if power is lost or the machine is turned off, ensuring accurate tracking of processed mail. The accuracy of the count can be influenced by the condition of the mail and the cleanliness of the machine.

Usage Features

The Omation 2100 is designed for ease of use with several key features:

  • Power On/Off: The machine is turned on and off using a dedicated switch.
  • Mail Loading: Mail is loaded into the Envelope Feed Hopper, with approximately 50 pieces at a time. Users must ensure the side of the mail to be cut is justified against the back of the Feed Hopper.
  • Cut/No Cut Selection: A selector knob on the top of the machine allows users to choose between opening mail ("Cut") or just counting it ("No Cut"). It's important to note that adjusting the cutter to its maximum depth might defeat the "No Cut" option.
  • Counter Reset: The LED Count Indicator Readout Window displays the count, which can be reset by pressing the Counter Reset Button.
  • Envelope Catch Tray: After processing, opened or counted mail is collected in the Envelope Catch Tray.
  • Cutter Adjustment: The cutter's depth of cut can be adjusted to accommodate different mail thicknesses. This is done by turning the Cutter Adjustment Screw with a 5/32" long-arm hex wrench. Turning clockwise increases the depth of cut, while turning counter-clockwise decreases it. This adjustment should be performed with the power off.
  • Separator Stone Adjustment: The separator stones help prevent double-feeds. For most envelopes, they should be set approximately 0.010 inch above the top of the feed belt level, allowing light to be seen between the stones and the belt. They can be adjusted slightly higher for thick envelopes or slightly lower for thin envelopes. This adjustment is made using a screw accessed through a hole in the letter tray plate.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the Omation 2100. Daily cleaning is recommended:

  • Power Disconnection: Always unplug the power cord before cleaning.
  • Upper Transport Cover Removal: The Upper Transport Cover can be removed to facilitate cleaning. To remove, turn the machine off, grasp the right end, and pull upwards. Reinstallation is the reverse process. The machine will not operate if the cover is not properly installed.
  • Chip Bin Management: The Chip Bin collects paper chips generated during the cutting process. A "Chip Bin Full" indicator light signals when it needs to be emptied. Removing and replacing the Chip Bin resets this indicator. The bin is accessed by pressing a black pop-out button, rotating it, and pulling it out. After emptying, it slides back into place, and the button is pressed to lock it. The machine will not run if the bin is not properly locked. It's important to clean the cavity where the Chip Bin resides to prevent chip buildup from hindering proper bin locking.
  • Vacuuming: Loose paper chips should be vacuumed from the machine.
  • Exterior Cleaning: The exterior of the machine should be wiped down with a cloth moistened with liquid cleaner. Liquid cleaner should not be applied directly to the 2100.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Use only Pitney Bowes approved supplies, especially aerosol dusters. Avoid flammable aerosol dusters and always read safety precautions on duster labels.
    • Use the provided power cord and plug it into a properly grounded, easily accessible wall outlet.
    • Avoid touching moving parts, and keep hands, loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair away from the machine during operation.
    • Do not remove covers or defeat safety interlock switches. Only trained service personnel should access hazardous parts.
    • Report any damaged or non-functioning components immediately.
    • Ensure proper ventilation and servicing access.
    • The power cord wall plug is the primary means of disconnecting the machine from the AC supply.
    • Do not use adapter plugs or remove the ground pin from the line cord.
    • Avoid wall outlets controlled by switches or shared with other equipment.
    • Do not route the power cord over sharp edges or trap it between furniture.
    • Ensure no strain on the power cord and that it is not jammed.
    • Ensure the area in front of the wall receptacle is clear.
    • Ensure machine mechanisms have stopped before clearing stoppages.
    • Avoid excessive force when removing stalled material.
    • Do not cover vent openings to prevent overheating.
    • Adhere to the required service schedule for periodic maintenance.
    • Read all instructions before operating.
    • Use the equipment only for its intended purpose.
    • Follow occupational safety and health standards.
    • The socket outlet should be near the equipment and easily accessible.
