Overview

This document describes the Panasonic Stereo Radio Cassette Player, Model No. RQ-CR18V, an auto-reverse portable device designed for playing cassette tapes and receiving AM/FM radio broadcasts. It emphasizes ease of use, basic operation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The RQ-CR18V is a compact, battery-operated stereo radio cassette player. Its primary functions include playing audio cassette tapes and tuning into AM and FM radio stations. The auto-reverse feature allows continuous playback of both sides of a cassette without manual intervention. The device is equipped with a stereo headphone jack for private listening and a belt clip for portability. A key feature is the "Hold" function, which prevents accidental operation of the front panel buttons, enhancing user convenience during transport. The player also incorporates an XBS (Extra Bass System) to boost low frequencies, providing a richer sound experience.

Usage Features:

Powering the Device: The player requires two R6/LR6, AA, UM-3 batteries (not included). Users must ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries. A battery condition indicator is present, which lights up for about 5 seconds when the unit is off and the check button is pressed, or continuously when in use. This indicator flashes when batteries are weak, signaling the need for replacement. Replacing batteries within 30 seconds helps retain stored memory information.

Cassette Playback:

  1. Inserting a Cassette: The head spacer must be removed before operation. Cassettes are inserted into the compartment.
  2. Starting Playback: Once a cassette is inserted, playback can be initiated. The auto-reverse function ensures continuous play by automatically switching tape direction (FWD/REV) until the stop button is pressed.
  3. Controlling Playback:
    • Stop: Press the [■] button during playback.
    • Fast Forward/Rewind: In stop mode, the [►►►] (fast forward) or [◄◄] (rewind) buttons are used. The [DIR] switch determines whether these buttons operate in the forward or reverse direction.
    • Changing Tape Direction: The [DIR] switch (REV or FWD) controls the tape direction during playback and for fast forward/rewind operations.
    • Tape Type: The unit is designed for normal type tapes. While it can play high and metal position tapes, it may not fully capture their characteristics.
    • Caution: Users are advised to always press the [■] button between functions (play, fast forward, rewind) to prevent tape jamming. The cassette compartment cover should not be opened during tape operation.

Radio Reception:

  1. Turning On/Off: The radio is turned on and off using the [RADIO ON/OFF] button. If a tape is playing, the radio will not turn on.
  2. Selecting Band: The [BAND] button cycles between AM and FM frequencies.
  3. Tuning: The [TUNING] dial is used to manually select stations.
  4. Improving Reception: The headphone cord acts as an antenna for FM reception and should be extended for better signal. For FM broadcasts, the [FM RECEPTION] switch can be set to "NOR" for normal reception or "CITY" in areas with strong interference or powerful stations.
  5. Preset Tuning: The device allows presetting up to 20 radio stations (10 for AM, 10 for FM).
    • Memory Presetting: Tune to the desired station, then select a memory channel (1-10) using the [PRESET] button and numeric buttons. A series of beeps confirms successful presetting.
    • Recalling Preset Stations: Press [PRESET] and the corresponding numeric button to recall a stored station.
  6. Frequency Step Adjustment: For overseas use, the frequency step can be changed (FM 0.2 MHz, AM 10 kHz; FM 0.1 MHz, AM 10 kHz; FM 0.05 MHz, AM 9 kHz). This action erases all preset stations.

Audio Enhancement:

  • Volume Control: The [VOL] dial adjusts the listening volume.
  • XBS (Extra Bass System): The [XBS OFF.ON] switch activates or deactivates the extra bass system. If sound distortion occurs with XBS on, the volume should be reduced.

Portability and Safety:

  • Headphones: Stereo headphones are included and connect to a 3.5mm (1/8 inch) stereo jack. Ensure the plug is firmly connected.
  • Belt Clip: A belt clip is included and can be attached to the unit for convenient carrying. Instructions are provided for both attaching and detaching the clip.
  • Hold Function: The [-HOLD] switch prevents accidental button presses, making the unit safe to carry in a pocket or bag. To operate the device, the hold state must be released.
  • Listening Caution: Users are advised against playing headphones at high volumes for extended periods to prevent hearing damage. Discontinue use if ringing in the ears occurs. The device should not be used while operating a motorized vehicle or in situations requiring extreme caution.

Maintenance Features:

Cleaning:

  • Unit Surfaces: The exterior surfaces of the unit should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth. Alcohol, paint thinner, or benzine should never be used. If using chemically treated cloths, follow the cloth manufacturer's instructions.
  • Tape Heads: Regular cleaning of the tape heads is recommended to ensure good quality playback. A cleaning tape (not included) can be used for this purpose.

Battery Care:

  • Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for a long period.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries.
  • Ordinary dry cell batteries should not be recharged.
  • Do not use batteries if their covering is peeled off, as mishandling can cause electrolyte leakage, which may damage the unit or cause fire. If leakage occurs, wash affected skin areas thoroughly with water and consult a dealer.
  • If rechargeable batteries are used, Panasonic rechargeable batteries are recommended.

General Care:

  • Avoid placing the unit near heat sources or leaving it in direct sunlight, especially in a closed automobile, for extended periods.
  • Protect the unit from rain, water, and other liquids to prevent damage.
  • Discontinue use if discomfort or allergic reactions occur from contact with earphones or other parts of the skin.

Troubleshooting and Service:

The manual includes a "Checkpoint" section to help users diagnose common problems such as no tape operations, no radio operations, no sounds, gritty noise, or inability to hear music clearly. It advises checking battery condition, hold state, tape presence, battery polarity, and headphone connection. For persistent issues, users are directed to separate the unit from mobile phones.

For more complex issues or damage requiring service (e.g., liquid ingress, rain exposure, abnormal operation, physical damage), the unit should be serviced by qualified personnel. Users are advised not to attempt servicing beyond the scope of the operating instructions. When replacement parts are needed, only manufacturer-specified parts or equivalents should be used to avoid hazards. After repairs, a safety check should be performed by the servicer.

For product information or assistance, users can contact the Panasonic Customer Call Center or visit their website. The serial number, located on the back of the cassette compartment cover or inside the battery compartment, should be noted for record-keeping and identification purposes.
