Content : Please refer to this supplement regarding the use of 2 types of SPM assemblies and their differences.
Since May 2002 production, the projection in the Traverse base of the (SPM) Spindle Motor Assembly has
been modified and the inner stopper has been deleted.
Therefore, in the course of servicing DVD changers and DVD Home Theater systems, you will encounter
2 types of SPM assemblies.
* There are the original Type A (with the inner stopper) and the revised Type B (without the inner
stopper). See diagrams below.
In addition, there are two types of Spindle Motor Assemblies (SPM) supplied as replacement parts.
* There are SPM TYPE 1 (short projection WITH inner stopper) and TYPE 2 (short projection
WITHOUT inner stopper). Refer to the pictures in the following page.

Overview

This document, "Quick Service Manual Ref. No.: NWBG0309CV52a," dated September 2003, provides crucial information for servicing various DVD products, specifically addressing the replacement of the Spindle Motor (SPM) Assembly. The manual is intended for technicians in Canada and Australia, indicating a regional focus for the reported cases.

Function Description:

The primary function of this manual is to guide service personnel through the correct procedure for replacing the Spindle Motor (SPM) Assembly in a range of DVD players and home theater systems. The core issue it addresses is the existence of two distinct types of SPM assemblies—an "Original (Type A)" and a "New (Type B)"—and two corresponding service parts, "Original (Type 1)" and "New (Type 2)," each with specific installation requirements. The manual aims to prevent confusion and ensure proper repair by detailing the necessary steps for each combination of existing product type and replacement part. It highlights a critical design change introduced in May 2002 production, where a projection in the Traverse base was modified, and an "inner stopper" was deleted from the SPM Assembly. This change necessitates careful attention during replacement to ensure compatibility and correct functionality.

Important Technical Specifications:

The document covers a wide array of DVD products, including:

  • DVD-CV Series: DVD-CV36, DVD-CV37, DVD-CV47, DVD-CV52, DVD-CV290
  • DVD-CP Series: DVD-CP67, DVD-CP72
  • SA-DK Series: SA-DK10, SA-DK20
  • SA-HT Series: SA-HT65, SA-HT67, SA-HT70, SA-HT75, SA-HT95
  • SA-DM Series: SA-DM3

The key technical distinction lies in the physical characteristics of the SPM Assembly:

  • Original (Type A) / SPM TYPE 1: Features a "Short Projection WITH an inner stopper." The accompanying diagram shows a distinct inner stopper component.
  • New (Type B) / SPM TYPE 2: Features a "Long Projection WITHOUT an inner stopper." The diagram for this type clearly shows the absence of the inner stopper.

The service parts are identified by specific part numbers:

  • SPM Assembly: RXQ0749B
  • SPM Assembly: RXQ1028
  • Inner stopper (if needed separately): RMX0192

The manual explicitly states that "Since May 2002 production, the projection in the Traverse base of the (SPM) Spindle Motor Assembly has been modified and the inner stopper has been deleted." This is a critical technical detail that dictates the repair procedure.

Usage Features:

The manual serves as a comprehensive guide for technicians performing repairs. Its usage features include:

  • Clear Identification: It categorizes SPM assemblies into "Original (Type A)" and "New (Type B)" based on their presence or absence of an inner stopper and the length of a projection. Similarly, service parts are categorized as "Type 1" and "Type 2."
  • Decision Matrix: A detailed table provides a decision matrix for various repair scenarios, outlining the specific steps required when replacing an existing SPM Assembly (Type A or Type B) with a service part (Type 1 or Type 2).
  • Visual Aids: Diagrams and pictures clearly illustrate the "Inner Stopper," "Short Projection," "Long Projection," and "TRV base" components, aiding in visual identification and understanding of the differences between the types.
  • Step-by-Step Instructions: For each replacement scenario, the manual provides concise instructions, such as "Just replace a service part Type (1) with repair unit," "Remove an inner stopper from the repair unit Type (A) and install it into the service part Type (2)," or "Additionally order an inner stopper and install it into a service part Type (2)."
  • Ordering Information: It specifies the part number (RMX0192) for ordering an inner stopper separately when required, ensuring technicians have all necessary components.

Maintenance Features:

The document itself is a maintenance feature, designed to streamline and standardize repair processes. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Preventative Confusion: The "Countermeasure introduced on the Service Parts" section explicitly states that "In order to prevent any confusion in the service field, the supplier (SPC) will supply only Type 1 as service parts from October, 2003." This is a significant maintenance strategy to simplify future repairs by standardizing the replacement part. This means that after October 2003, technicians will primarily work with Type 1 service parts, which always include an inner stopper.
  • Ensuring Correct Repair: By providing detailed instructions for all possible combinations, the manual ensures that repairs are performed correctly, preventing potential issues arising from mismatched components or incorrect installation.
  • Troubleshooting Guidance: While not a direct troubleshooting guide, the document implicitly addresses common repair challenges related to component variations, thereby reducing the likelihood of errors during maintenance.
  • Documentation of Changes: It documents a critical design change (the removal of the inner stopper and modification of the projection), which is essential for long-term maintenance and understanding product evolution.
  • Part Standardization: The decision to supply only Type 1 service parts from October 2003 simplifies inventory management and reduces the complexity of maintenance procedures in the long run. Technicians will need to adapt their approach based on the existing product type (A or B) and the standardized Type 1 service part. For instance, if replacing a Type B product (no inner stopper) with a Type 1 service part (with inner stopper), the inner stopper from the Type 1 part must be removed and installed onto the traverse unit if the original product was a Type A. If the original product was a Type B, and the Type 1 service part is used, the inner stopper from the Type 1 part would need to be removed and discarded, or kept for future use if it's a reusable component. However, the table indicates that when Type B is replaced with Type 1, it's a direct replacement, implying the inner stopper from Type 1 is either not used or is compatible. The instruction "Be sure to keep the inner stopper in the service part Type (1)" for Type 1 replacement suggests that the stopper might be a separate, reusable component that needs to be transferred or kept. The table's instructions for Type 1 replacement are simpler, suggesting that Type 1 is designed to be universally compatible, possibly by allowing the inner stopper to be removed or ignored if not needed.

In summary, this Quick Service Manual is an indispensable resource for technicians, providing the necessary information and guidance to accurately and efficiently replace SPM Assemblies in a variety of DVD products, while accounting for critical design variations and standardizing future service part supply.
