Turbine Series fuel filter/water
separator protects the precision
components of your engine from
dirt, rust, algae, asphaltines,
varnishes and especially water,
which is prevalent in low distillate
fuels. Contaminants are removed
from fuel using the following
legendary three stage process:
Stage 1—Separation
Using the fuel flow, the stationary
turbine separates large solids and
free water through enchanced
centrifugal force.
Stage 2—Coalescing
Smaller water droplets and solids
coalesce on the conical baffle and
fall to the collection bowl.
Stage 3—Filtration
Engines will benefit from near
100% water separation and fuel
filtration with Racor’s proprietary
Aquabloc

water repelling media.
The replaceable filters are
available in 2, 10, and 30 micron
ratings.

Overview

The 500MA/MAM Turbine Series is a fuel filter/water separator designed for marine applications, manufactured by Parker Hannifin Corporation, Racor Division. Its primary function is to protect the precision components of an engine from contaminants such as dirt, rust, algae, asphaltines, varnishes, and especially water, which is common in low distillate fuels.

Function Description:

The device employs a three-stage process to remove contaminants from fuel:

  1. Separation: Utilizes the fuel flow to activate a stationary turbine, which separates large solids and free water through enhanced centrifugal force.
  2. Coalescing: Smaller water droplets and solids coalesce on a conical baffle and then fall into the collection bowl.
  3. Filtration: Achieves near 100% water separation and fuel filtration using Racor's proprietary Aquabloc® water-repelling media.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Flow Rate: 60 GPH (227 LPH) for both 500MA and 500MAM models.
  • Port Size (SAE J1926): 3/4"-16 UNF for both models.
  • Service Clearance:
    • Above Assembly: 5.0 in. (12.7 cm)
    • Below Assembly: 2.0 in. (5.1 cm)
  • Replacement Filters: Available in 2 micron (2010SM-OR), 10 micron (2010TM-OR), and 30 micron (2010PM-OR) ratings.
  • Water In Bowl Capacity: 3.7 oz. (109 ml) for both models.
  • Dimensions:
    • 500MA: Height: 11.5 in. (29.2 cm), Width: 5.8 in. (14.7 cm), Depth: 4.8 in. (12.2 cm).
    • 500MAM: Height: 11.0 in. (27.9 cm), Width: 5.8 in. (14.7 cm), Depth: 4.8 in. (12.2 cm).
  • Weight (dry): 500MA: 4.0 lb (1.8 kg), 500MAM: 5.0 lb (2.2 kg).
  • Max. Allowable Working Pressure: 25 PSI (1.7 bar) for both models.
  • Clean Pressure Drop: 0.25 PSI (1.7 kPa) for both models.
  • Water Removal Efficiency: 99% for both models.
  • Ambient Temp. Range: -40°F to +250°F (-40°C to +121°C).
  • Max. Fuel Temperature: 190°F (88°C).
  • Approvals: ABS/BV, UL Listed, NMMA Type Accepted, ABYC Member.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Designed for installation on the suction side of the fuel transfer pump for optimal water separating efficiency. It should be located between the horizontal planes of the bottom of the fuel tank and the inlet of the fuel pump, if possible.
  • Mounting: The assembly should be installed within 10° of vertical. Clearance of at least 5 inches (12.7 cm) above and 2 inches (5.1 cm) below the filter assembly is required for servicing.
  • Priming: Involves removing the T-handle and lid, filling the filter with clean fuel, lubricating gaskets, and replacing the lid and T-handle, tightening by hand.
  • Optional Bypass Installation (RK 19492 UL Listed Shut-off Valve Kit): Allows the user to service the filter without shutting down the engine. This kit can be retrofitted to most Racor Marine Fuel Filter/Water Separators to simplify draining contaminants. It features a simple open/close valve for easy contaminant evacuation, 1/4" NPT threads, and is Coast Guard accepted in most diesel applications.
  • T-handle Vacuum Gauge (RK23262): An optional accessory that monitors filter condition. As the filter clogs, restriction increases, leading to more air mixing with fuel and reduced fuel delivery to the engine, which can cause power loss or engine stall. The gauge provides a visual monitor to indicate when a filter change is needed.

Maintenance Features:

  • Draining Water: The frequency of draining depends on the fuel's contamination level. The collection bowl should be inspected or drained daily, or as necessary, before contaminants reach the bottom of the turbine or when the optional Water Detection Module indicates a drain is required.
    • Suction Side Applications: Close the inlet valve, open the self-venting drain on the bottom of the bowl, and close the drain after all water and contaminants are evacuated. Avoid leaving the drain open too long to prevent complete draining of fuel.
    • Pressure Side Applications: Open the self-venting drain. Head pressure will push water and contaminants out while keeping the filter primed. Close the drain after all water and contaminants are evacuated.
  • Filter Replacement:
    • Frequency: Replace every 500 hours, every other oil change, annually, or at the first indication of power loss (e.g., when the optional vacuum gauge reads between 7 to 10 inches of mercury (inHg)). For construction and agricultural use, change every 300 hours.
    • Procedure: Isolate the filter assembly with bypass or shut-off valves (if applicable), remove the T-handle and lid, and pull out the old filter by holding the bail handles and twisting. Dispose of the old filter and replace the lid gasket and T-handle O-ring (supplied with new filter), lubricating them with motor oil or diesel fuel. Fill the unit with clean fuel before replacing the lid and T-handle.
    • Important Note: Always carry extra replacement filters, as a single tankful of excessively dirty fuel can quickly clog a filter. Only genuine Racor Aquabloc® replacement filters should be used.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Air Ingestion/Fuel Leakage: Damaged, worn, or dirty seals can cause air ingestion or fuel leakage. Inspect and replace all seals as needed, and clean sealing surfaces.
    • Loss of Prime: If the unit loses prime, inspect upstream hose connections, disassemble the unit to inspect the seal and checkball.
    • Dirty Collection Bowl: If the contaminant collection bowl becomes dirty, remove the four bowl ring capscrews, drop the bowl, clean it with hot soapy water, dry it, and re-install, ensuring the bowl gasket is clean and lubricated with silicone grease.
    • Water Sensor (if equipped): If air bubbles or fuel leakage appear from the sensor, it may indicate a loose sensor or a damaged O-ring. Tighten to 15-20 in. lbs.
