Overview

The Pentair WhisperFlo® VS and WhisperFlo® VST Variable Speed Pumps are designed for in-ground pools, spas, water features, and fountains. These pumps feature a thick-walled body, a permanent magnet motor, and engineered hydraulics, ensuring a rugged and durable design. Pentair's hydraulic engineering, refined over 40 years, contributes to the compact, rugged, and easy-to-maintain nature of these pumps, promising years of reliable service.

Function Description

The WhisperFlo® VS and VST pumps are variable speed pumps, meaning they can operate at different speeds to optimize performance and energy consumption. The pump's drive controls both speed settings and run durations. It can operate at speeds ranging from 450 to 3450 RPM and within a voltage range of 115-230 Vrms nominal at either 50 or 60Hz input frequency. The primary goal is to run the pump at the lowest speeds necessary to maintain a sanitary environment while minimizing energy consumption. Optimal programming may require some trial-and-error, considering factors such as pool size, additional water features, types of chemicals used, and local environmental conditions.

The pump can be controlled in several ways:

  • Drive Keypad: The pump can be programmed and controlled directly from its drive keypad. This includes setting the internal clock, operational schedules, and accessing various pump features and settings.
  • External Control via RS-485: The pump can be externally controlled by certain Pentair control systems using an RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324z). When connected to external controls, the pump prioritizes commands from RS-485, then Digital Inputs, and finally the Drive Programmed Schedule.
  • External Control via Digital Inputs: The pump can also be externally controlled via digital input signals when paired with either the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit or a Digital Input Wiring Kit (discontinued). A trigger signal is required to control the pump via digital inputs, which can be provided by the pump drive itself or by an external low voltage signal.

Usage Features

The WhisperFlo® VS and VST pumps offer several features designed for ease of use and efficient operation:

  • Extremely Quiet Operation: Designed to run very quietly, enhancing the pool environment.
  • 2-inch Plumbing: Simplifies replacement in existing systems.
  • See-through Strainer Pot Lid: Allows for easy visual inspection of the strainer basket, making it simple to check for debris.
  • Self-Priming: Ensures quick and easy start-up.
  • High-Efficiency Permanent Magnet Motor: Contributes to energy savings.
  • Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) Motor: Provides durability and protection from environmental elements.
  • Simple User Interface: The drive keypad is designed for straightforward operation.
  • UV and Rain-Proof Enclosure: Protects the pump's electronics from weather.
  • Onboard Time of Day Schedule: Allows for scheduling pump operation directly from the pump.
  • Adjustable Priming Mode: Users can customize the priming speed and duration.
  • Programmable Quick Clean Mode: Provides a temporary high-speed operation for quick cleaning tasks.
  • Pump Alarm Display and Retention: Displays and retains alarm information for troubleshooting.
  • Accepts 115-230V, 50/60Hz Input Power: Versatile power compatibility.
  • Auto Power Limiting Protection Circuit: Protects the pump from electrical overloads.
  • 24-hour Clock Retention: The internal clock retains its setting for up to 24 hours during power outages.
  • Keypad Lockout Mode: Prevents unintended changes to pump settings.

The pump's keypad features several buttons and LEDs:

  • SPEED Buttons (1, 2, 3): Used to select desired speed programs. An illuminated LED indicates the selected program, while a blinking LED signifies external control.
  • External Control Only LED: Indicates if the pump is in external control mode, disabling drive-programmed schedules.
  • Start/Stop LED: Shows if the pump is in a Start State, allowing it to run from various inputs.
  • Start/Stop Button: Used to manually start and stop the pump.
  • Display Parameter LEDs: Indicate the information currently displayed on the screen (Speed/%FL, Time, Duration, Watts). A blinking LED means the parameter is being edited.
  • Display Button: Toggles between display modes and is used to set the clock, screen brightness, and pump address.
  • Quick Clean Button: Activates the programmed Quick Clean cycle.
  • Power LED: Indicates live power supply to the pump.
  • "+" and "-" Arrows: Used to adjust pump settings, increasing or decreasing values.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the WhisperFlo® VS and VST pumps.

  • Strainer Pot Basket Cleaning: The see-through lid allows for easy visual inspection of the strainer basket, which should be checked weekly. Regularly emptying and cleaning the basket prevents stress on the motor and maintains filter and heater efficiency. The process involves stopping the pump, disconnecting power, relieving system pressure, removing the lid, cleaning the basket, refilling the pot with water, cleaning and lubricating the lid O-ring, reinstalling the lid, and restarting the pump.
  • Motor Care:
    • Protection from Heat: The motor should be shaded from the sun, and any enclosure must be well-ventilated to prevent overheating. Ample cross-ventilation is recommended.
    • Protection from Dirt: Keep the motor free from foreign matter, chemicals, and dust. Dirt damage can void the motor warranty.
    • Protection from Moisture: Protect the motor from splashing water and extreme weather. If motor internals get wet, they should be allowed to dry before operation. Operating a flooded pump can void the motor warranty.
  • Shaft Seal Replacement: The shaft seal, consisting of a rotating spring seal and a fixed ceramic seal, may occasionally need replacement due to damage. The manual provides detailed instructions for disassembly, careful removal of the old seals, cleaning of seal cavities, and installation of new seals using silicone sealant and proper tools to avoid damage.
  • Winterizing: To prevent freeze damage in cold climates, users are advised to stop the pump, disconnect power, relieve system pressure, remove drain plugs to drain the pump, and cover the motor to protect it from severe weather. It is important not to wrap the motor with airtight materials during winter storage or when operating.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting chart to diagnose common problems such as pump failure, reduced capacity, pump not starting, pump stopping, and noisy operation. It lists possible causes and corrective actions, emphasizing that electrical servicing should be performed by a qualified professional.
  • Alarms and Fault Codes: The pump displays fault codes for various issues. The manual provides a table of fault codes and their descriptions, guiding users through initial troubleshooting steps, such as inspecting connections or disassembling the pump for mechanical issues. For persistent errors, professional service is recommended.

The pump's design and features aim to provide a reliable, energy-efficient, and user-friendly experience for pool owners, with clear guidelines for installation, operation, and maintenance.
