Overview

The Performance Tool 6" Random Orbital Buffer (Stock Number W50053) is a versatile power tool designed for polishing, waxing, and buffing various high-gloss surfaces. Its primary function is to provide an efficient and effective method for automotive finish maintenance, as well as for use on boats, aircraft, hardwood floors, furniture, and more. The random orbital mechanism mimics the motion of circular hand polishing, ensuring a smooth and swirl-free finish.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Amps: 0.5
  • Volts: 120VAC ~ 60HZ
  • Free Speed: 3,500 RPM
  • Cord: 17" 2-Pronged Polarized
  • Pad Size: 6" (15.24cm)
  • Certifications: C ETL US Listed, Intertek 4002205

Usage Features:

General Operation:

The orbital buffer is designed for ease of use with an Oval Palm Grip for better control. It comes fully assembled, ready for immediate use.

  • Switching On/Off: To start, firmly grip the tool with both hands and push the ON/OFF switch (marked "I" for ON). Allow the pad to reach full speed before applying to the surface. To turn off, push the ON/OFF switch (marked "O" for OFF) while holding the buffer against the surface being polished.
  • Starting and Stopping: Always start and stop the orbital buffer on or against the surface being polished to prevent uncontrolled movement.
  • Application Technique: Begin polishing larger flat surfaces (e.g., hood, trunk, roof) with broad, sweeping, criss-cross motions. For curved surfaces (e.g., car doors, quarter panels, fenders), use small circular motions.
  • Pressure: Do not press down on the surface. The tool's random orbital action of the pad and bonnet is designed to do the work without additional pressure.
  • Safety: Always unplug the orbital buffer when not in use, or when installing/removing bonnets.

Surface Preparation:

Before using the buffer, ensure the surface is clean and dry. Stubborn dirt like road tar, grease, and bug stains should be removed with appropriate cleaning products. Always apply cleaner to a soft cloth first, then to the surface, never directly onto the surface to be polished. Avoid abrasive cleaners as they can damage the surface.

Bonnets and Application:

The buffer includes two types of bonnets:

  1. Terrycloth Bonnet: Used for applying wax/polish.
  2. Synthetic Wool Bonnet: Used for fine buffing and finishing.

Attaching Bonnets:

Turn the orbital buffer upside down, resting it on its motor housing. Fit the chosen bonnet over the foam pad, ensuring the elastic edge is securely drawn over the top of the pad.

Applying Polish (with Terrycloth Bonnet):

  • Select a polish suitable for the application and read its directions carefully.
  • For paste polish, apply approximately one heaping teaspoon evenly over the entire terrycloth bonnet using a putty knife or plastic spreader.
  • For liquid polish, apply a small half-dollar sized circle in the center of the bonnet, with two additional concentric rings outside the circle.
  • Crucially, do not apply polish directly onto the surface being polished.
  • Note that after the first application, the bonnet will absorb less polish, so apply smaller quantities when reloading.
  • Polish hard-to-reach areas (e.g., bumpers, side mirrors) by hand.

Buffing (with Synthetic Wool Bonnet):

  • Follow the same starting, stopping, and application techniques as with polishing.
  • Buff hard-to-reach areas by hand.

Maintenance Features:

General Care:

  • Cleaning: Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the orbital buffer. Do not immerse any part in liquid.
  • Chemical Avoidance: Avoid contact with solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, or other petroleum-based products, as they can damage plastics.
  • Pad Care: Allow the foam pad to dry completely after each use. Store the orbital buffer with the pad facing upwards to retain its shape and extend its life.
  • Polish Quantity: Avoid using too much polish, as it can saturate the pad and reduce its lifespan.
  • Ventilation: Keep the buffer's air vents unclogged and clean to ensure adequate cooling.
  • Dust and Dirt: Regularly wipe the tool with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust and dirt.
  • Screws: Periodically check that all screws are tight, as they may loosen over time.

Bonnets Care:

  • Washing: Wash both terrycloth and synthetic wool bonnets by hand in cold water with a mild detergent.
  • Drying: Remove excess moisture and allow bonnets to air dry.
  • Storage: Remove bonnets from the orbital buffer when not in use.
  • Lifespan: Wash bonnets after each use to prolong their life.

Service and Troubleshooting:

  • Qualified Personnel: Tool service and maintenance should only be performed by qualified repair personnel using identical replacement parts to prevent electric shock or injury.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual provides a troubleshooting chart for common issues like the buffer not starting, poor performance, or vibration/abnormal noise, along with possible causes and solutions (e.g., checking power cord, replacing fuse, cleaning bonnets, tightening screws, contacting service center).
  • Warranty: The product comes with a 1-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service. Defective products can be returned for free replacement within 90 days of purchase. After 90 days and up to one year, Performance Tool will replace defective parts at no charge, provided a sales receipt accompanies the return. The warranty excludes consumables (blades, bits, bulbs, etc.) and damage from misuse, neglect, accident, or unauthorized alterations.
