1. General
The Compact Joystick (CJ R-net) is an input device and is coupled to the R-net
wheelchair electronics.
It’s a proportional joystick module in a small compact housing.
The joystick D50800 from PG Drive Technology is used. It is a very reliable
contactless joystick which meets the most rigid requirements
The CJ R-net can be adjusted to any individual needs and possibilities of the user.
This can be done mechanically – see different choices of joysticks – or by adjusting
the ‘Throw’ parameters of the R-net system.
We can install the CJ R-net in a good position through the mounting kit.
Because the CJ R-net has a standard shaft diameter, it will accept adaptive knobs
available on the market.
The CJ R-net can be directly connected to the R-net system.
The CJ R-net is completely protected against moisture, which makes it suitable to
use outdoors.

Overview

The Permobil Compact Joystick (CJ) R-net and Compact Joystick (CJ) R-net Light are input devices designed for use with R-net wheelchair electronics. The CJ R-net is identified by spare part number 1822778, while the CJ R-net Light is 1822986.

Function Description

The primary function of the Compact Joystick is to control the speed and direction of the wheelchair. Pushing the joystick further from the center position increases the wheelchair's speed, and releasing it automatically applies the brakes. If the wheelchair is equipped with actuators, the joystick can also be used to move and select them. The CJ R-net is a proportional joystick module housed in a small, compact design. It utilizes the D50800 joystick from PG Drive Technology, a reliable contactless joystick that meets stringent requirements. The CJ R-net can be adjusted to individual user needs, either mechanically through different joystick choices or by adjusting the 'Throw' parameters within the R-net system.

The CJ R-net Light is a modified version of the CJ R-net, featuring mechanical adaptations. These include a reduced stroke of the lever (75% of the standard CJ R-net), a limited operation force (50% of the standard CJ R-net), and a reduced height of the lever (15mm).

Important Technical Specifications

The R-net control system, which the joystick connects to, comprises at least two modules: a Joystick Module and a Power Module. The modular design allows for significant expansion of the control system. The joystick module is secured using four M4 screws with a maximum penetration of 10mm, utilizing holes arranged on a Pitch Circular Diameter (PCD) of 32mm. Four M4x10mm screws are supplied with the Permofix CJ Set.

The control system uses industrial-grade components, ensuring reliable operation across a wide range of conditions. The CJ R-net is completely protected against moisture, making it suitable for outdoor use.

Usage Features

Connectivity: The CJ R-net directly connects to the R-net control system. Communication cables are connected by firmly pushing the connector into its mate until the yellow plastic is no longer visible, secured by a friction system. Disconnection is achieved by firmly pulling the connector housings apart.

Adjustability: The joystick can be adjusted to suit individual user needs. Its standard shaft diameter allows it to accept various adaptive knobs available on the market. Mounting kits are available to install the CJ R-net in an optimal position.

External Switches: The joystick module includes jack sockets for external devices.

  • External On/Off Switch Jack: Allows the user to turn the control system on and off using an external device, such as a buddy button.
  • External Profile Switch Jack: Depending on programming, this can have various functions. The factory default is 'Horn,' which sounds when the connected switch is pressed.

Indication LED: A single LED provides user information through different states and pulse patterns, simplifying status communication.

  • Start up: Red (starting up), Red/Green pulse slow (reconfiguration), Red/Green pulse fast (restart request), Fast red pulse (joystick out of neutral).
  • Normal Operation: Green (Focus -> Drive Mode), Red (No Focus), Green pulse (Standby), Orange (Tilt function active), Red pulse (Drive inhibit).
  • Failure: 1 red pulse (Not Calibrated or Tested), 2 red pulses (Internal Error), 3 red pulses (External Error).

Diagnostic Feedback: If safety circuits activate and prevent wheelchair movement, a diagnostics screen is displayed, or an acoustic signal is produced intermittently for non-critical errors. The indication LED will flash periodically, alternating with a green flash, with the number of red flashes indicating the fault.

Programming: The control system can be programmed using specialist R-net software and a Dongle to meet specific user needs. This should only be performed by healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge of PGDT electronic control systems and the CJ R-net. Incorrect programming can lead to an unsafe wheelchair setup.

Maintenance Features

Handling: Users should avoid knocking the control system or joystick, especially when driving, and protect it during transport to prevent damage to cables.

Operating Conditions: To improve reliability, exposure to extreme conditions should be minimized. The control system and its components should not be exposed to damp for prolonged periods. Contamination with food or drink should be cleaned off promptly.

Cleaning: The control system and joystick should be cleaned with a cloth dampened with diluted detergent. Abrasive or spirit-based cleaners must not be used. Care should be taken when cleaning the joystick.

Functionality Tests (before dispatch): These tests should be conducted in an open space with a restraining device (e.g., seat belt) in use.

  • Joystick and Gaiter: Check for bent or damaged joystick, and for damage or splitting of the rubber gaiter/boot. Ensure the joystick returns to the center position when pushed and released.
  • Operational Test: On a level floor with clear space, switch on the control system. Verify the battery gauge. Slowly push the joystick forward until parking brakes operate, then immediately release to hear them engage. Repeat for backward, left, and right movements.
  • Test Drive: Drive the wheelchair to ensure correct operation across all user control positions.
  • Soft-Stop Test: Drive at full forward speed, then switch off the control system. The wheelchair must decelerate to a standstill, not stop suddenly.

Servicing and Warranty: All repairs and servicing must be carried out by authorized service personnel. Unauthorized adjustments or modifications will invalidate the warranty and may create hazards. The warranty is void if the CJ R-net is not used according to the user manual or R-net control system technical manual, is misused/abused, or modified/repaired by unauthorized persons. If the control system is damaged, it must be checked by qualified personnel before operation.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (E.M.C.): The R-net has been tested for compliance with EC directive 89/336/EEC and EN12184 EMC requirements. Wheelchair manufacturers or dealers should perform relevant tests if necessary.
