Monitoring SpO
2
Note
This chapter describes monitoring SpO
2
on a monitor with the Philips SpO
2
module. If
your monitor has a Masimo SpO
2
module, see the EarlyVue VS30 Vital Signs Monitor
with Masimo
®
Instructions for Use.
The VS30 monitor uses a motion-tolerant signal-processing FAST SpO
2
algorithm, which
produces the following SpO
2
measurements:
• Oxygen saturation of arterial blood (SpO
2
) — The percentage of oxygenated
hemoglobin in relation to the sum of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin
(functional arterial oxygen saturation).
• An SpO
2
(pleth) waveform — A visual indication of a patient’s pulse.
• A pulse rate value — The value is derived from the pleth wave, if SpO
2
is the current
pulse rate source.
• A perfusion index — Indicates the quality of the SpO
2
signal.
Selecting an SpO
2
Sensor
When selecting a sensor, consider the patient’s weight and activity level, adequacy of
perfusion, availability of sensor sites, need for sterility, and anticipated duration of
monitoring.
Caution
Do not reuse Philips FAST single-use accessories, except to relocate on the same patient.
You can use two types of SpO
2
sensors:
• Reusable sensors can be reused on different patients.
• Disposable sensors must not be reused on different patients; however, they can be
reused or relocated on the same patient.
For critical applications, Philips recommends using disposable single-use accessories.
