Monitoring Carbon Dioxide
The EarlyVue VS30 vital signs monitor uses the Microstream™ sidestream etCO
2
method
to measure carbon dioxide (CO
2
). The sidestream measurement method samples the
respiratory gas with a constant flow from the patient’s airway and analyzes it with a
remote CO
2
sensor built into the monitor. It uses the Microstream™ algorithms for
Integrated Pulmonary Index™ (IPI) and Smart Alarm Respiratory Analysis™ (SARA).
Use the CO
2
measurement to monitor a patient’s respiratory and ventilation status. The
CO
2
measurement produces the following information:
A CO
2
waveform.
An end tidal (etCO
2
) value: the CO
2
value measured at the end of the expiration
phase.
An inspired minimum CO
2
(imCO
2
) value: the smallest value measured during
inspiration.
An Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI), for adult patients only
An airway respiration rate (awRR): the number of breaths per minute, calculated from
the CO
2
waveform.
Apnea alarms based on the awRR.
You can measure CO
2
only in Interval or Continuous monitoring mode. CO
2
measurement
is not available in Spot Check monitoring mode.
Note
Your system administrator can enable or disable any monitoring mode except Spot
Check. The Mode menu displays only the modes that are enabled. Spot Check is always
available.
After a monitor power-up time of up to 10 seconds, the CO
2
system requires an
initialization time before presenting the first CO
2
measurement. Initialization time is
typically 30 seconds, but can be up to 180 seconds.
WARNING
If CO
2
calibration does not take place as instructed in the EarlyVue VS30 Vital Signs Monitor Service
and Repair Guide, the monitor may be out of calibration. A monitor that is out of calibration should
not be used, as it may provide inaccurate results. Contact your biomedical engineer to confirm that
scheduled calibration has been performed.
