Integrated Pulmonary Index
9-2 EarlyVue VS30 Instructions for Use
Integrated Pulmonary Index
The Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI) is an indication of an adult patient’s overall
ventilatory status based on four measurement parameters: etCO
2
, awRR, pulse rate, and
SpO
2
. IPI provides an early indication of a change in ventilatory status that may not be
shown by the value of any of the four parameters individually. The IPI provides additional
information regarding patient status, possibly before etCO
2
, awRR, pulse rate, or SpO
2
values reach levels of concern. The IPI is available only for adult patients. It is displayed
as a single value between 1 and 10.
Selecting CO
2
Accessories
In intubated patients, a sample of the respiratory gas is drawn from the patient’s
breathing circuit through an airway adapter and a gas sampling tube. In non-intubated
patients, the gas sample is drawn through a nasal or an oral-nasal cannula.
When selecting CO
2
accessories, consider the following:
• The patient type (adult, pediatric, or neonatal)
• The patient’s size and weight
• Whether the patient is receiving supplemental oxygen
• The probability that the patient will switch between oral and nasal breathing
• The condition of the patient (ventilated or not ventilated)
• If the patient is ventilated, whether ventilation is humidified or non-humidified
• Whether the CO
2
monitoring will be short-term or long-term
Note
For best results for short-term monitoring, use FilterLine™ sets (with orange connectors).
For long-term monitoring, use FilterLine™ Set H (with yellow connectors). Follow the
directions provided with the sampling line.
All accessories are for single patient use.
Intubated Patients: Use a Microstream™ FilterLine™ set for non-humidified ventilation
on intubated patients. Use a FilterLine™ H set for humidified ventilation.
Non-Intubated Patients: Use a Smart CapnoLine™, which is a combined oral-nasal
sampling line. Use the Smart CapnoLine™ O
2
, a combined oral-nasal O
2
/CO

sampling
line, to measure CO
2
and deliver supplemental oxygen to the patient. Use a
Microstream™ sampling line with H in its name where long duration use of CO
2
sampling
is required.
Caution
Do not reuse CO
2
accessories, except on the same patient.
