Early Warning Scoring and
QuickCheck Workflows
Early Warning Scoring (EWS) can help you identify patients at risk of deterioration. The
system detects trends in a patient’s vital signs.
EWS is available on your monitor only if the technical staff at your facility configure it and
your system administrator enables it using the QuickAlerts feature. Your facility provides
the details for how EWS has been set up for your monitor. This chapter provides general
information about EWS and the EarlyVue VS30.
Understanding Early Warning Scoring (EWS)
An early warning score is an assessment aid used to help recognize the early signs of
deterioration in patients.
The type of scoring used is configured by your system administrator and is usually based
on an assessment method already in use before the system was set up. Your system
administrator uses QuickAlerts options to configure EWS on the EarlyVue VS30.
QuickCapture configurations for capturing your observations and assessments can be
configured to be part of the required EWS data. See “Including Observations and
Assessments in a Patient Record” on page 3-27 for QuickCapture information.
The VS30 patient monitor supports two widely used types of scoring:
• Single Parameter Scoring (SPS): When one of the vitals measured is outside of
configured thresholds, a color-coded circle is displayed next to the measured value
on the main screen and in the patient record.
In the example below, the circle is white for the normal range and red for outside the
thresholds. The color code is configured by your system administrator.
Range Color (Example)
Inside the threshold White
Outside the threshold Red
