Early Warning Scoring on the VS30 Monitor
12-2 EarlyVue VS30 Instructions for Use
• Modified Early Warning Scoring (MEWS): A subscore is given for each of the vitals
based on the measured value. When all of the required vital signs have been
measured, the subscores are added together to produce the MEWS score.
Each subscore has a color coding to indicate the level of risk associated with it. If
configured, the MEWS subscore for each vital sign is shown within the colored circle
on the main screen and in the patient record.
The color code and subscore range are configured by your system administrator. For
example:
If a MEWS score is greater than 99, ++ is displayed in the colored circle on the main
screen and in the patient record.

WARNING
• Never rely solely on EWS data and related alert messages generated by the monitor or IntelliVue
GuardianSoftware (IGS). The most reliable method of patient monitoring requires correct
operation of the monitor and close in-person observation and assessment of the patient.
• Always follow your hospital protocols to perform your own assessment of the patient, including
obvious or observable patient distress.
• Serious injury could occur if the patient’s status deteriorates and you are not aware of it.
• To avoid incorrect or inappropriate treatment, always verify the patient ID information—including
Primary ID and Patient Type—in the patient bar on the monitor before taking vital signs
measurements.
• QuickCapture and QuickAlerts configurations can vary among the different departments in your
facility. Using the wrong configurations can result in patient injury. Before using a monitor that
has been moved from another department, confirm with your administrator that the monitor has
the appropriate QuickCapture and QuickAlerts configurations for your department and your
assigned patients.
Notes:
• It is recommended that you use a Philips barcode scanner to provide consistent and
accurate patient information entry. Standard and programmed modes are
supported.
• The Philips on-device EWS feature is available only for adult patients.
