The unique brewing system, in combination with special Douwe Egberts coffee pads, is engineered to extract the very best in flavor and aroma from freshly roasted coffee.
The Senseo HD7800 operates by brewing coffee from pre-portioned coffee pads. Users can choose to make one or two cups of coffee at a time, using either a 1-cup or 2-cup pad holder. The appliance heats water and then forces it through the coffee pad to produce a fresh brew. The on/off button initiates the heating process, indicated by a blinking pilot light, and the brewing process begins once the water is heated. The appliance automatically supplies the optimal amount of water for each cup. If the brewing process is interrupted, the appliance will not complete the interrupted cycle when switched back on. The appliance also features an automatic shut-off after one hour of inactivity, which is a convenient feature if you intend to make another cup of coffee later.
To optimize the taste of the coffee, several aspects should be kept in mind. Fresh water is crucial; it is recommended to use fresh water every day. If the appliance has not been used for some time, the water reservoir should be rinsed, filled with fresh water, and the appliance flushed before use. For optimal brewing results, only Douwe Egberts Senseo coffee pads should be used. These pads are designed to stay fresh longer if the package is closed with the keep-fresh seal after use or if they are stored in a container. Each coffee pad contains the optimal amount of ground coffee for one cup.
Before initial use, it is important to prepare the appliance. This involves checking that the mains voltage matches your home's voltage and ensuring the appliance, plug, and cord are undamaged. The Senseo should be placed in a frost-free, flat, stable location, out of reach of children, and not used at altitudes higher than 1000 meters above sea level, as it will not operate at temperatures below 10°C/42°F.
The initial setup includes cleaning the water reservoir, coffee outflow unit, and pad holder, followed by flushing the appliance with clean water. The water reservoir should be filled with cold water up to the MAX indication. To brew coffee, the lid is released by moving two levers towards each other, then opened. The appropriate pad holder (1-cup or 2-cup) is inserted without a pad. The lid is closed firmly, and the appliance is plugged into an earthed wall socket. A bowl with a capacity of at least 27 fl. ounces should be placed under the coffee outlet openings to collect water during the flushing cycle. The appliance will fill itself with water, flush, and then switch itself off.
When brewing coffee, the water reservoir should be filled with water up to the MAX indication. It is important never to pour milk, coffee, hot water, or carbonated water into the water reservoir. The pad holder is then placed in the appliance, and the lid is closed firmly. Cups are placed under the outflow openings. The desired number of cups is selected by pressing the corresponding button (1-cup or 2-cup). If the appliance stops brewing two cups and they are only half full, it indicates insufficient water in the reservoir. In this case, the reservoir should be refilled, and the 1-cup button pressed to complete filling both cups. After use, coffee pads should be removed by lifting out the pad holder and emptying it.
For a stronger coffee flavor, users can try the Dark Roast blend. If the coffee is too strong, check the number of pads and the dosing button used, and consider trying the Mild Roast blend for a milder flavor. If the machine pours less water than usual, descaling is recommended.
Regular cleaning and descaling are essential to prolong the life of the appliance and guarantee optimal brewing results. The appliance should never be immersed in water. Before cleaning, always unplug the appliance. The exterior can be cleaned with a moist cloth. The coffee outflow unit can be removed and cleaned with a washing-up brush, and it can be disassembled for more thorough cleaning. The pad holder, cup tray, and drip tray can be cleaned in hot water with washing-up liquid or in a dishwasher, as they are dishwasher-proof. The top of the reservoir can also be removed for thorough cleaning of the inside. Regular rinsing of the pad holder is recommended for better coffee taste.
Descaling should be performed regularly. A descaling agent based on citric acid should be used, following the instructions on its package. The water reservoir is filled with the descaling agent up to the MAX indication and placed back on the appliance. A bowl is placed under the coffee outlet to collect the descaling agent. The on/off button and then both the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons are pressed briefly to start flushing. For best results, allow at least 30 minutes after flushing with the descaling agent. This descaling procedure should be repeated one more time. Finally, the appliance should complete two more flushing cycles with clean water to rinse away any descaling agent residues.
If water leaks from the appliance, ensure the two levers are in their most outward position, the water reservoir is not filled beyond the MAX indication, and the pad holder is not blocked. The small opening in the middle of the pad holder can be deblocked by rinsing it under the tap or using a washing-up brush or pin. Some drops of water on the worktop are normal and caused by filling and placing the water reservoir. For other cases of leakage, contact the Philips Customer Care Centre.
If the pilot light blinks slowly for more than 5 minutes, or rapidly, check that the water reservoir is properly placed, has enough water (above MIN indication), and that the initial flushing procedure has been carried out. If the mains cord is damaged, it must be replaced by Philips or an authorized service center, as special tools and parts are required.
