4 V60 Plus User Manual Addendum: High-Flow Therapy Safety and Alarm Features 1150533 B
The following summarizes the sequence of events if the maximum system pressure
limit is reached:
1. Flow is reduced until pressure decreases to 5 cmH
2
O.
2. A visual and audible alarm indicates the ventilator Cannot Reach Target
Flow.
3. Every 5 seconds the ventilator checks for resolution of the Cannot
Reach Target Flow alarm condition by increasing the flow up to the
maximum pressure limit.
4. If the target flow cannot be reached, the alarm persists until the user
resolves the issue.
If the sealed mask causes significant resistance and a complete obstruction,
the high-priority Patient Circuit Occluded alarm sounds.
IMPORTANT: Users must ensure that NIV masks are not used during HFT mode.
High-flow nasal
cannula use during
High-Flow Therapy
In some conditions, the maximum system pressure limit may be reached when
the patient is wearing a high-flow nasal cannula. Increased resistance to the
flow of gas may cause the ventilator to reach the maximum system pressure
limit, triggering the Cannot Reach Target Flow alarm as described above.
Complete obstruction to the flow of gas triggers a high-priority Patient Circuit
Occluded alarm.
Users must identify and correct the cause(s) of increased resistance that may
lead to the ventilator reaching the maximum system pressure limit. Possible
causes include:
• Size of nasal cannula size not appropriate for the flow setting
• Kink(s) in the tubing or cannula
• Mucus plug blocking the flow
• Patient movement, positioning, or coughing that may lead to increased
resistance in the gas pathway
• Blockage in the gas pathway
If the alarm condition persists despite the selection of an appropriately sized
cannula and with no visible causes of resistance, or obstruction to the flow of
gas, the set target flow may be too high for the system setup. Using
appropriate clinical judgement, possible remedies may include:
• Reducing the target flow to a clinically acceptable level
• Switching to an alternative device or form of therapy
The information in this addendum regarding the alarm and safety features
during HFT should help you to quickly and safely provide patient care. For
