High-Flow Therapy Safety and Alarm Features
The V60 Plus ventilator with High-Flow Therapy (HFT) enables clinicians to easily
switch between high-flow therapy and noninvasive ventilation for patients needing
varying levels of respiratory care. As a multi-therapy ventilator, the V60 Plus uses a
different approach to deliver HFT compared to stand-alone HFT devices in order to
address patient safety.
The V60 Plus provides access to high-flow oxygen therapy and noninvasive
ventilation using the same circuit. To help users quickly and safely switch from
one mode to the other, the ventilator incorporates alarm and safety features to help
address and mitigate against potential complications, such as inadvertently
leaving the NIV mask in place when switching to HFT.
No mask during High-
Flow Therapy
When initiating HFT, a “No Mask” icon continually displays while high-flow
therapy is active. As a safety measure to protect against elevated and unsafe lung
pressures caused by leaving the NIV mask on a patient during HFT, there is a
maximum system pressure limit during HFT which is determined according to the
flow rate:
•30 cmH
2
O maximum pressure limit when the flow rate is
set >
20 L/min
•20 cmH
2
O maximum pressure limit when the flow rate is
set < 20 L/min
A mask that is sealed to the patient’s face creates increased resistance and may
cause the system pressure to increase. When the maximum pressure limit is
reached, a Cannot Reach Target Flow alarm sounds and the ventilator decreases the
system pressure to 5 cmH
2
O to provide relief to the patient. As a result, the
delivered flow is reduced, and the ventilator’s waveform displays the drop in
delivered flow.
