Overview

The Pondmaster Low Pressure Filter System is a comprehensive filtration unit designed for ponds, offering biological, mechanical, and, in some models, ultraviolet (UV) filtration. This system is engineered to maintain clear and healthy pond water by removing suspended solids, inhibiting algae reproduction, and fostering beneficial bacterial growth.

Function Description:

The core function of the Pondmaster filter system is to provide multi-stage filtration for pond water.

  • Mechanical Filtration: The system physically removes suspended solids and debris from the water column. It is important to note that this filter is not designed to remove large leaves or act as a pond vacuum; a pump bag, skimmer, or prefilter is recommended to prevent large debris from entering the filter chamber.
  • Biological Filtration: The filter utilizes Bio-Matrix Media, which provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. These bacteria convert dissolved toxic nitrogenous waste (ammonia) into harmless compounds, creating a healthier environment for aquatic life. The establishment of these bacterial colonies typically takes 2-4 weeks, during which the UV lamp should be turned off.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) Filtration (PUV Models): Models designated with "PUV" include a UV Clarifier that uses ultraviolet light to inhibit algae from reproducing by damaging its DNA. UV light also helps kill parasites in the water. The effectiveness of UV filtration depends on flow rate and exposure time to the UV rays. It's important to note that UV light does not kill string algae that cling to pond sides.

Important Technical Specifications:

The filter system is available in several models, each with specific pump capacity and pond size recommendations:

  • P1000 or PUV1000: Maximum pump output 2000 gallons/hour, maximum baseline pressure 5 PSI, suitable for ponds up to 1000 gallons.
  • P2000 or PUV2000: Maximum pump output 2000 gallons/hour, maximum baseline pressure 5 PSI, suitable for ponds up to 2000 gallons.
  • P4000 or PUV4000: Maximum pump output 4000 gallons/hour, maximum baseline pressure 5 PSI, suitable for ponds above 2000 gallons.

The filter is designed to operate within these flow and pressure ranges; exceeding them can lead to leakage or damage and void the warranty. For water volumes above 4000 GPH or pressures over 8 PSI (18' head), a Valved Bypass is recommended to safely control water flow and pressure to the filter and water features. The system uses 1 1/2" I.D. hoses to maximize flow rates and minimize back pressure.

Usage Features:

The Pondmaster filter system is designed for ease of use and monitoring:

  • Multiport Valve: A clear multiport valve allows control and visual monitoring of water clarity during backwash/rinse operations. It has positions for FILTER, BACKWASH, and RINSE.
  • Waste Port Valve: A convenient ball valve directs waste water away from the pond during rinse or backwash.
  • Pressure Gauge: Displays internal pressure, indicating when routine backwash is necessary. The baseline pressure is established upon initial setup (should not exceed 5 PSI) and backwash is recommended when the pressure rises 2-3 PSI above this baseline. Pressure should not build beyond 8 PSI to prevent damage.
  • Agitator Handle: This dual-purpose handle manually turns the internal agitator to unlock waste from the media during backwash/rinse and allows safe monitoring of UV Lamp status (for PUV models).
  • Quick Connect Hose Fitting: Facilitates easy, tool-free hose removal and reassembly.
  • Bottom Drain (Optional): Simplifies annual winter maintenance by draining water directly from the bottom of the filter drum.
  • Valved Bypass (Optional): Splits and controls water flow between the filter and a waterfall or fountain, preventing the low-pressure filter from being overburdened.
  • Pro Skimmers (Optional): Enclose the water pump and keep debris away from the intake, with adjustable weir doors and removable leaf baskets.
  • Pro Biological Filter and Falls (Optional): Produces a waterfall effect while providing additional filtration.

Maintenance Features:

The system incorporates features to simplify maintenance and ensure longevity:

  • Backwash and Rinse Operations: The agitator handle and multiport valve facilitate efficient backwashing and rinsing to clear accumulated debris from the filter media with minimal water loss. The filter works best when the media is "dirty," so backwashing is only necessary when the pressure gauge indicates it.
  • UV Lamp Ballast (PUV Models): Top-mounted for convenient access, allowing for UV bulb replacement without opening the filter cover.
  • Quartz Sleeve Cleaning: For PUV models, the quartz sleeve should be cleaned periodically to remove dirt and lime scale buildup, which can block UV light and reduce efficiency.
  • Winterization: Instructions are provided for draining and winterizing the filter to prevent freezing and cracking of the drum in harsh winters. This involves turning off the pump, opening the waste port valve, removing the pressure gauge, and, for UV models, carefully removing the ballast and quartz sleeve.
  • Disassembly and Reassembly: While opening the filter cover is generally discouraged, detailed instructions are provided for complete disassembly and reassembly if necessary, for example, if media or the agitator needs to be accessed.
  • UV Bulb Replacement: The UV bulb produces useful UV radiation for approximately 9000 hours and should be replaced annually for maximum performance.

The Pondmaster Low Pressure Filter System is designed for burial near the pond, with a heavy-duty poly canister that is weather-proof. It is crucial to follow all electrical precautions, including using a properly grounded outlet, a "drip loop," and a ground fault interrupter circuit (GFCI). The unit should always be unplugged from its power source before installation or servicing.
