Overview

This document describes the POWERTECH DC-DC Isolated 4-stage Boost Charger, available in two models: MB-3690 and MB-3691.

Function Description

The device is a compact DC-DC isolated 4-stage boost charger designed for modern automobile applications, particularly dual battery systems. Its galvanic isolation allows connection to any load without interference from the input. It employs the latest switch-mode technology to deliver a smart 4-stage charging algorithm and voltage boosting, ensuring a full charge for lead-acid batteries and improving battery life.

Beyond charging, the device can also function as a constant power supply. It can stabilize an unstable DC supply from a vehicle's alternator, providing clean and stable DC voltage for accessories like LCD TVs, digital Hi-Fi systems, wireless telephones, refrigeration systems, LED lighting, games, and mobile computers.

The charger incorporates overload and short circuit protection, automatically switching off and restarting once the issue is resolved. A thermal-controlled cooling fan manages the internal temperature.

Usage Features

Operation as DC Booster Charger:

  1. Connection: Connect the input to a DC source (e.g., vehicle alternator or cranking battery) using appropriate cabling and fuse. Connect the battery to the DC output.
  2. Power On: Turn on the Power switch; the "POWER ON" LED illuminates, indicating readiness for charging.
  3. Charging Stages:
    • Stage 1 (BULK): The "BULK" LED lights up. This stage ensures the battery is charged at maximum condition, boosting the charging cycle and waking up weak batteries to absorb energy.
    • Stage 2 (BULK - continued): After 10-20 minutes, the charger remains in the "BULK" stage, delivering maximum current to the battery.
    • Stage 3 (ABSORPTION): The red LED goes out, and the yellow "ABSORPTION" LED lights up. The device delivers constant voltage with reduced current. The charging voltage can be set using DIP switches No. 1, 2, and 3.
    • Stage 4 (FLOAT): The "ABSORPTION" LED goes out, and the green "FLOAT" LED lights up. Charging current decreases, and the voltage is held constant. The charging voltage can be set using DIP switches No. 4 and 5.
  4. DIP Switch Settings: An "Output Voltage Setting Table" provides specific DIP switch configurations for different battery types (SLA/GEL, AGM, FLOODED) and desired float/bulk/absorption voltages. For example, for a 12V output SLA/GEL battery, SW 3 is ON, and SW 1,2,4,5,6 are OFF, resulting in a 13.2V float and 14.2V bulk/absorption.

Operation as Power Supply:

  1. Setting: Set DIP switch No. 6 to the ON position.
  2. Status: The "POWER ON" and "FLOAT" LEDs light up. The bulk and absorption LEDs go out. DIP switches No. 1, 2, and 3 are disabled.
  3. Voltage Control: The power supply output voltage can be set using DIP switches No. 4 and 5.

Remote On/Off Control:

  • A 6.3mm male terminal on the front panel allows remote switching by applying 9-30VDC positive voltage (e.g., from vehicle ignition or an external switch).
  • The maximum working voltage for remote control is 32VDC.
  • The device's main power on/off switch must be OFF if using this feature.

Maintenance Features

Safety Operation Guidelines:

  • Flammable Materials: Do not use near flammable materials or in areas with flammable fumes/gasses.
  • Hot Surface: The device can become hot, especially at full load; avoid touching.
  • Polarity: Ensure correct polarity during connection.
  • Location: Do not place the device on top of batteries, especially flooded/wet types, as gas vapor may be generated during charging.
  • Battery Type: Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries.
  • Intended Use: Use the appliance only as described.
  • Heat Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight or heating sources.
  • Storage: Store in a dry and cool place.
  • Cable Management:
    • Use tubes or ducts when feeding cables through walls with sharp edges.
    • Fasten cables securely to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Supervision: Children should be supervised to prevent them from playing with the device.
  • Moisture: Do not allow water to drip or splash on the device.
  • Ventilation: Ensure air inlets and outlets are not covered.
  • Damage Check: Operate only if the housing and connection cables are undamaged.

Disposal:

  • When the device becomes unusable, dispose of it in accordance with applicable disposal regulations.

Warranty Information:

  • The warranty covers parts and labor for repair service within the warranty period.
  • It does not apply to misuse, alteration, neglect, improper installation, physical damage (internal or external), or damage from improper use or unsuitable environments.
  • The manufacturer is not liable for direct, incidental, special, consequential, or economic loss.
  • For warranty service, return the device to the place of purchase with a copy of the receipt.
