These recommendations are a guideline for typical conveyor applications. They do not overrule bearing or greasing manufacturer’s
recommendations.
PPI recommends a high-quality, #2 Lithium Complex based mineral oil grease with a viscosity of 200 to 250. Mobilgrease XHP222 is
suggested to be used on conveyor pulley applications, including the SSP. When used with an automatic greasing system, a #1 Lithium
Complex grease is recommended, such as Mobilgrease XHP221 This is compatible with the initial grease fill. For ambient temperatures from
-40°F to 0°F (-40°C to -18°C), it is recommended that a Lithium Complex based synthetic oil grease is used, such as Mobilith SHC220.
Suggested greasing intervals during initial use are as follows:
Check the grease condition for excessive oiliness or dirt and adjust
greasing frequency accordingly. For conditions and/or temperatures
outside of this range, consult with a reputable lubricant supplier.
PPI grease fills conveyor pulley bearings 100% at the factory. This
reduces the possibility of condensation in the housing. This is the
preferred method for larger, slower speed bearings such as those
used on pulleys. Therefore, some grease may be purged out during
the first run of the pulley. This is considered normal. After 8 hours of
initial use, all bearings should be re-greased with fresh grease.

Overview

The Static Shaft Pulley (SSP®) is a conveyor pulley designed for various industrial applications, with a focus on durability and ease of maintenance. It features a static shaft design, meaning the shaft remains stationary while the pulley shell rotates around it, supported by internal bearings.

Function Description:

The SSP serves as a critical component in conveyor systems, facilitating the movement of conveyor belts. Its primary function is to provide a rotating surface that drives or redirects the belt, ensuring smooth and continuous material transport. The static shaft design aims to simplify maintenance and potentially extend bearing life by isolating the bearings from rotational stresses on the shaft itself.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Grease Type: PPI recommends a high-quality, #2 Lithium Complex based mineral oil grease with a viscosity of 200 to 250. For automatic greasing systems, a #1 Lithium Complex grease is recommended. For ambient temperatures from -40°F to 0°F (-40°C to -18°C), a Lithium Complex based synthetic oil grease (e.g., Mobilith SHC220) is recommended.
  • Bearing Fill: Bearings are 100% grease-filled at the factory to reduce condensation.
  • Seal Carrier: Features two 1/4" UNC bolt holes for removal aid and one 1/8" NPT pipe fitting for greasing.
  • Seals: The SSP utilizes multiple seals, including:
    • Contact Seals: V-ring contact seals (e.g., V-110A to V-725A) with varying nominal diameters (Max. Dia. 4.528 to 29.331, Min. Dia. 4.134 to 27.756) and SSP sizes (015 to 284).
    • Interior Contact Seals: Oil seals (e.g., 34454TA-H to 460x500x20SA) with ODs from 4.50 to 19.68 and IDs from 3.44 to 18.11, corresponding to SSP sizes 015 to 284.
    • O-Ring Seals: O-ring cord (1/8" diameter) and sponge rubber cord (3/8" and 1/2" diameters for Rev 0 housings).
  • Retainers:
    • Shaft Retainers (External): Ranging from 2.952" to 16.535" nominal diameter, with corresponding IDs and ODs, for SSP sizes 015 to 284.
    • Bearing Retainers (Internal): Ranging from 5.250" to 29.921" nominal diameter, with corresponding IDs and ODs, for SSP sizes 015 to 284.
  • Bearing Assembly Components: Hub kits, bearing kits, and seal kits are available for various SSP series (SSP015 to SSP284), specifying bearing size, bore (mm and in), shaft diameter at extension, and corresponding part numbers.
  • Mounting Bolts: Capscrews and washers are used for mounting, with quantities and sizes varying by SSP size (e.g., 4 @ 5/8-11 UNRC x 2 1/2 for SSP015, 24 @ 1-1/4-6 UNC x 6 for SSP284). Torque specifications range from 150 to 1,000 ft-lbs.
  • Temperature Sensor (Optional): A thermal sensor with leadwires can be attached to measure bearing temperature. Resistance readings can be translated to temperature, and a transmitter can be used for customized output. Errors due to long lead wires can be calculated using provided equations (R = L x N, E = R/T).

Usage Features:

  • Greasing: The seal carrier includes a grease zerk for bearing lubrication. Remote grease lines are recommended for safe regreasing while the pulley is rotating. Greasing should continue until purging around the seal carrier is noticed.
  • Optional Greasing Method: An optional method involves greasing with a specified volume of grease (1.4 oz for SSP015 to 116 oz for SSP284) to purge old grease through the v-ring contact seals and seal carrier.
  • Initial Use: After 8 hours of initial use, all bearings should be re-greased with fresh grease.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Optional temperature sensors allow for continuous monitoring of bearing temperatures, aiding in preventive maintenance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Greasing Intervals: Suggested greasing intervals vary based on operating conditions and temperature:
    • Up to 120°F (up to 50°C):
