Overview

The Milford Person Lift is a mobility aid designed to transfer a person simply, safely, and comfortably from a mobility product to a vehicle or other seat, and vice versa. It is not intended for any other purpose.

Technical Specifications:

  • Weight of the lifting arm: 18.7 lbs (8.5 kg)
  • Maximum lifting capacity (SWL): 330 lbs (150 kg). Note that the actual lifting capacity can vary depending on the extension settings of the lift arm. For example, at maximum extension (23.6 inches), the capacity is 260 lbs (118 kg), while at minimum extension (15.8 inches), it is 330 lbs (150 kg). The manual provides a detailed table of lifting capacities based on the number of visible holes in the extension setting.
  • Maximum range of lift: 23 inches
  • Power supply: 12V dc
  • Maximum current draw: 20 Amps
  • Product Materials: Aluminum and Mild/Stainless Steels
  • Material Finish: Powder Coated
  • Slings: Available in various sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL for Standard; S, M, L for Double Amputee; M, L for Fleece Lined; S, M, L for Net). All slings are rated at 385 lbs weight capacity and are color-coded on their edges (White for Extra Small, Yellow for Small, Green for Medium, Red for Large, Blue for Extra Large).
  • Sling Material: Polyester

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The Milford Person Lift must be installed by an authorized Pride installer or qualified technician. Separate installation instructions are provided with the installation kit.

  • Components:

    • Socket: The power socket is typically located at the side of the mounting post within the vehicle. The lift's cord connects directly to this socket.
    • Handset: Features a simple two-button control for "Up" and "Down." Releasing a button stops the lifting or lowering action. Emergency Up/Down buttons are also available on the lift arm itself, indicated by a red arrow.
    • Lift Arm, Extension Arm, and Spreader Bar: These components are mounted for operation and removed for storage.
    • Sling: The sling is crucial for safe transfer. It comes in different sizes and types (Standard, Double Amputee, Fleece Lined, Net) to suit various user needs. The lifting straps should be adjusted to be as short as possible for optimal lift and maneuverability. The sling should lift the person in a seated position at lower chest height, not above shoulder or waist height.
    • Storage Bag: A large carry bag is provided to store the lift arm, extension arm, spreader bar, and sling when not in use.
  • Operation (Entering the Vehicle):

    1. Mount the lift arm, extension arm, and spreader bar, ensuring both pins are engaged and the arm rotates freely. Switch the lift on.
    2. Position the lift arm and the person to be lifted.
    3. Connect the leg straps first, then the side straps of the sling.
    4. Raise the person off their seat, manually controlling lateral movement.
    5. Using the handle on the back of the sling, maneuver the person closer to the vehicle and position their legs over the door sill.
    6. Guide the person into the vehicle, knees first.
    7. If necessary, lower the lift until the person rests against the seat edge to help them duck their head.
    8. Lift again until the person is free of the seat (avoid lifting too high inside the vehicle).
    9. Position the person comfortably in the seat.
    10. Lower the lift arm until the sling straps are slack, then disconnect the straps in reverse order. Remove the Milford Person Lift for storage.
  • Operation (Exiting the Vehicle):

    1. Mount the lift arm, extension arm, and spreader bar. Connect the sling straps (leg straps first, then side straps).
    2. Press "Up" to raise the person off the seat.
    3. Move the person to the edge of the seat and lower if necessary. Begin to move out of the vehicle.
    4. Move completely out of the vehicle and take feet out over the sill. It may be necessary to lift the person higher to assist with moving their feet out.
    5. Lower the person onto the seat. Lift up on the rear sling strap to help achieve a good sitting position.
    6. Switch the Milford Person Lift off and store it.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Authorized Installation: Only an authorized Pride Provider or qualified technician should install the lift.
  • Weight Limitations: Adhere strictly to the specified weight capacity. Exceeding it voids the warranty and can cause injury/damage.
  • Sling Use: Use only the sling provided with the Milford Person Lift. Other slings may have different balance/attachment points and are unsuitable.
  • Pre-Lift Inspection: Inspect the lift and fitting kit for sharp edges. Inspect the sling and straps before every use for twisting, fraying, or wear. Replace damaged slings immediately. Ensure buckles are secure and the person is correctly positioned.
  • Operator Positioning: Keep hands clear of moving lift arms. Control lateral movement using the handle on the back of the sling. Stand close to the person being lifted.
  • Prohibited Actions: Do not lift/lower while transferring the person into/out of the vehicle. Keep hands, clothing, and handset cord clear of moving parts. Avoid catching the handset cord in the car door. Do not get electrical connections wet. Never use a damaged system. Do not exceed maximum lifting capacity. Never travel with the lift arm in place.
  • Sling Adjustment: Incorrect sling adjustment can cause discomfort and make operation difficult. Ensure the sling is pushed down the person's back sufficiently and leg supports are spread evenly under the thigh.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Inspection: Inspect slings, buckles, straps, and electrical cords for damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Every 6 Months: Inspect all mounting hardware and lift pivots for defects and secure fit. Tighten or replace loose hardware.
  • Every 12 Months: Annual servicing by an authorized Pride Provider is recommended to ensure safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Cleaning: Slings can be washed in a washing machine at up to 167°F (75°C) after removing buckles and webbing anchors. The lift unit can be cleaned with a damp cloth and detergent, ensuring it is disconnected and that water does not enter electrical connectors or the control box. Allow to dry before use.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as:

  • Lift not lifting high enough (check arm extension, sling strap length).
  • Lift not working (check handset light, power, fuse, connections, wires).
  • Handset not working (check connections, cord damage; use emergency buttons).
  • Person uncomfortable when lifted (check sling positioning, strap adjustment).
  • Lift operating slowly (check person's weight against capacity, vehicle battery charge).
  • Damage or accidents (contact authorized Pride Provider for inspection).

Warranty:

The Milford Electric Person Lift comes with a 12-month warranty from the date of delivery, covering defects in workmanship or function. The warranty does not cover incorrect installation, damage due to incorrect use, or consequential loss (unless required by regional law). The warranty is invalidated if the seal on the actuator or control box is broken, or if any alterations are made by unqualified persons. Damaged actuators or control boxes should be returned to an authorized Pride Provider. Wires should not be cut; connectors must be correctly removed for repair.
