Overview

This document is a user manual for the Promovec BUTCHER e-bike, an electric bicycle designed for varied purposes, including both flat and hilly terrain. The e-bike is manufactured according to the European standard EPAC EN 15194:2017.

Function Description

The BUTCHER e-bike is an electric bicycle that provides assistance when the rider pedals. The motor, integrated into the rear wheel, activates when a sensor detects pedal movement. The level of assist can be controlled by pre-fixed assist levels. The system automatically disconnects the engine when there is no pedal movement or when the speed exceeds 25 km/h. The e-bike is also capable of functioning as a regular bicycle without electrical assistance. It is equipped with a front carrier for transporting goods, which should be tightened securely during cycling.

Usage Features

Getting Started: To start, ensure the battery is installed, then power on the system using the on/off button on the display. The engine will assist based on the chosen assist level when you pedal.

Display - Connect+: The display is operated by three buttons on the left side of the handlebar.

  • Battery Indicator: 5 levels of blue light indicate the battery's state of charge.
  • Assist Level Indicator: 5 levels of green light, shown after buttons are pressed, indicate the current assist level.
  • Error Codes: Integrated into the display and shown by flashing LEDs. If the first LED in the battery indicator flashes, it signals an error. Refer to the troubleshooting section for specific error codes.

Assist Functions: The display offers two main assist functions:

  • Assist Levels (1-5): Chosen using the up/down buttons.
  • Walk Assist: Activated by holding down the "down" button. This function allows the bike to move up to 6 km/h without pedaling, regardless of the assist level, which is useful for uphill sections.
  • Lights: Toggled on and off by holding down the "up" button.

Extended Features by Mobile App: Connecting a smartphone via Bluetooth to the Promovec Connect+ app provides access to additional real-time features:

  • Current speed
  • Trip counter
  • Driving mode (eco/speed/dist)
  • Map
  • Basic functions (timer, battery status, assist level, etc.) The phone can serve as an alternative display to control the e-bike and its functions.

Connecting New Devices (Mobile App):

  1. Download the "Promovec Connect+" app (available on iOS and Android).
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and open the app.
  3. Turn on the display on the bike.
  4. Tap "new bike" in the app; a list of available bikes will appear.
  5. Select your bike and follow the onscreen instructions. You can rename the bike.
  6. Return to the home screen and select your newly added bike.
  7. Your electric bike is now connected. The app supports connecting with multiple e-bikes.

Tire Size Settings: The circumference of the wheel needs to be set in the display. This can be done by measuring the distance around the wheel from valve to valve or by using the provided chart, which lists circumferences based on ETRTO and tire size values found on the tire.

Battery Mounting/Dismounting: The battery is mounted under the front carrier from the left side of the bike. Use the provided key for mounting/dismounting. Remove the key from the battery while driving. The electrical system turns on automatically when the battery is inserted.

Road Traffic Law: The electric bicycle is subject to the same road traffic laws as regular bicycles. Riders are considered cyclists and should wear helmets and ensure proper lighting.

Insurance: For insurance purposes, an electric bike is typically covered under standard household insurance, similar to an ordinary bicycle. It is recommended to consult with your insurance agent regarding the technical aspects of the e-bike.

Frame Number: The e-bike has a frame number located under the crank.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: The bike and electrical system require no special maintenance. Regular cleaning and lubrication of moving parts are recommended.

Wearing Parts: Wearing parts such as tires, chains, and brake pads should be replaced as needed. Models with v-brakes have a wear indicator (line or dot) engraved on the rim; if this indicator is no longer visible, the rim must be replaced.

Professional Inspection: To maintain the electric bike's condition, an inspection twice a year is recommended, with at least one annual inspection by a professional workshop.

Battery Storage:

  • If storing the e-bike for more than one month, recharge the battery once a month.
  • If stored outdoors or in an unheated room, remove the battery and store/charge it at room temperature (preferably 18-20°C).
  • Batteries should always be fully charged during storage to prevent complete or partial discharge over time.

Battery Charging:

  • The battery is supplied approximately 60% charged from the factory; it must be fully charged with the supplied charger before first use (at least 24 hours initially).
  • Optimum charging occurs at 18-20°C.
  • Frequent charging of the Li-Ion battery can extend its life.
  • Charging must be done indoors or under a pent roof as the charger is splashproof.
  • The battery can be charged either on the bicycle or removed.
  • Insert the charger plug into the battery, then the mains plug into the socket.
  • When charging, the "charge" and "power" lights on the charger will be red.
  • When fully charged, the "charge" light will turn green, and the "power" light will remain red.
  • If charging doesn't start immediately, check connections.
  • It is recommended to leave the battery connected for a minimum of 24 hours after the green diode lights up to balance the cells and maximize capacity.

Battery Warning:

  • Do not heat, short circuit, puncture, or mistreat the battery.
  • Do not dismantle or destroy the battery.
  • Do not throw the battery into fire.
  • Do not immerse the battery in water or any other liquid.
  • Only charge the battery with the included charger.
  • Never charge the battery at temperatures below 0°C or above 45°C.

Disposal of Battery: Batteries contain harmful substances and must not be disposed of with normal household waste. They are marked with a crossed-out garbage symbol, indicating separate collection. Used batteries should be submitted to established collection systems (recycling stations, etc.) to ensure proper recycling and environmental protection.

Charger Caution (Children):

  • Only allow children at least 8 years old to use the battery charger with sufficient instruction.
  • Explain that the charger is not a toy.
  • Instruct children not to attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries due to eruption danger.
  • Regularly examine the battery charger (cord, plug, enclosure) for damage. Do not use a damaged charger until repaired.

Battery Registration: Register your battery via the Promovec website to obtain a 2-year capacity warranty, guaranteeing a minimum capacity of 70% within 2 years from the date of purchase. Registration must occur within 8 days of purchase.

Transportation of Electric Bike:

  • Transport the e-bike responsibly.
  • Use an approved bicycle carrier marked with TÜV and specifically designed for electric bikes, as they are heavier than traditional bikes and require a higher load capacity.
  • Before transport, remove the battery and cover the bike to protect against humid weather.
  • Do not store the battery in environments exceeding -10°C or 60°C.
  • Keep the battery out of direct sunlight.
