Overview

This document describes a chain breaker tool, Stock Number W89100, designed for breaking, pressing, and riveting roller chains. It is accompanied by an owner's manual that provides detailed instructions for its safe and effective use.

Function Description

The primary function of this tool is to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of various roller chains, specifically those ranging from #25 to #35 and #428 to #630, including standard and O-ring types. It performs three key operations:

  1. Breaking Chain: This involves pushing out the pins of a chain to separate links. The tool is equipped with different breaking tips to match various chain sizes, ensuring a precise and effective pin removal process.
  2. Pressing Side Plates: After breaking a chain, new links or master links need to be installed. This operation presses the side plates onto the chain pins, securing the new connection.
  3. Riveting Chain Pins: For rivet-type master links, the tool is used to flare the hollow end of the chain pins, creating a secure, permanent connection that holds the side plate firmly in place.

The tool's design allows for versatility in handling different chain types and sizes, making it a comprehensive solution for chain maintenance and repair.

Usage Features

The chain breaker tool is designed for manual operation, emphasizing precision and control. Its components are clearly labeled in the parts diagram, aiding in assembly and understanding. Key usage features include:

  • Modular Assembly: The tool consists of several interchangeable parts, such as the handle, alignment bolt, push bolt, breaking tips, rivet tip, press plates, spring, lever, guide, and anvil. This modularity allows the user to configure the tool for specific tasks (breaking, pressing, or riveting) by selecting and assembling the appropriate components.
  • Breaking Chain Procedure:
    • The process begins by threading the alignment bolt into the C-frame.
    • The user selects a breaking tip that best fits the chain application and inserts it into the spring, then slides both into the alignment bolt.
    • The push bolt is threaded into the alignment bolt above the tip.
    • The tool is positioned over the chain, ensuring the breaking tip aligns precisely with the chain pin.
    • The push bolt is tightened by hand using the slide handle or a 14 mm wrench, which pushes the chain pin completely out of the chain and through the hole in the C-frame.
  • Pressing Side Plates Procedure:
    • The alignment bolt is threaded into the C-frame.
    • Press plates are assembled into the tool, with the grooved plate in the C-frame hole and the other plate in the alignment bolt.
    • The user verifies that the chain pins align with the groove and holes in the press plates.
    • A 14 mm wrench is used to tighten the alignment bolt until the chain pins protrude past the face of the side plate.
    • For clip-type master links, pins must protrude enough to install the clip. For rivet-type master links, pins must protrude enough to be flared over the side plate.
  • Riveting Chain Pins Procedure:
    • The alignment bolt is threaded into the C-frame.
    • The rivet tip is inserted into the spring and slid into the alignment bolt.
    • The push bolt is threaded into the alignment bolt above the tip.
    • The large anvil is placed in the C-frame hole (a small anvil is used for cam chains up to the 3-series).
    • The tool is positioned over the chain pin to be riveted, with the hollow end of the chain pin facing the rivet tip.
    • The user verifies the rivet tip is withdrawn enough to clear the end of the chain pin.
    • The alignment bolt is tightened securely against the side plate of the chain pin.
    • The push bolt is tightened by hand using the lever or a 14 mm wrench until the rivet tip spreads the hollow nose of the chain pin, flaring it just enough to hold the side plate solidly in place. This procedure is repeated for the other chain pin.
    • After riveting, the tool is removed, and the user verifies that both chain pins show similar flares and that the riveted-on side plate is aligned with adjacent chain links.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding all instructions and warnings before operation. It highlights the need for eye protection (meeting ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA standards) to prevent personal injury. The use of power tools or pipe extensions with this tool is explicitly prohibited, as it is designed for hand tightening only.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the chain breaker tool. The manual provides clear guidelines:

  • Cleaning and Lubrication: To ensure a longer life for the tool, it is recommended to clean and lubricate the threads before each use. This helps prevent wear and tear, ensuring smooth operation of the threaded components.
  • Rivet Head Grinding: For larger chains, specifically #520 and above, it may be necessary to grind the rivet head. This suggests that the tool's design might require some pre-preparation of the chain pins for optimal riveting, or it might refer to grinding down an existing rivet head before breaking a chain.
  • Oil Application: Specifically, the manual notes to apply oil to the threads on the alignment bolt. This ensures smooth threading and prevents seizing during operation.
  • General Care: While not explicitly detailed as a "maintenance feature," the emphasis on hand tightening and avoiding power tools or pipe extensions implicitly guides users towards gentle handling, which contributes to the tool's overall durability.
  • Warranty Information: The product comes with a limited warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service. This warranty allows for free replacement within 90 days of purchase and replacement of defective parts within one year, provided a sales receipt is presented. However, it excludes consumables like blades, bits, and punches, and does not cover products used for unintended purposes, or those that have been repaired, altered, misused, neglected, or subjected to accidents or normal wear and tear. This warranty information, while not a direct maintenance step, informs the user about the expected lifespan and support for the tool, encouraging proper use to avoid voiding the warranty.
