Overview

The Ramsey RPH 8000T Planetary Winch is a robust hydraulic device designed for vehicle recovery and pulling loads. It is engineered for efficient and safe operation, emphasizing proper installation and regular maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal performance.

Function Description

The RPH 8000T operates as a hydraulic planetary winch, utilizing hydraulic power to reel in or reel out a cable, thereby pulling or recovering loads. Its core function involves a hydraulic motor driving a planetary gear system, which in turn rotates a cable drum. The winch features a clutch mechanism that allows for free-spooling of the cable, enabling quick deployment when attaching to a load. An integrated oil-cooled automatic safety brake system ensures that loads are held securely and prevents drift. The winch is designed to operate within specific hydraulic system parameters, including a recommended relief valve setting, flow rate, and filtration level, to prevent damage and ensure reliable performance.

Usage Features

Before operating the RPH 8000T, users are strongly advised to read and understand the manual, particularly the "WARNING" and "OPERATION" sections. Test runs are recommended to familiarize oneself with the winch's sounds and operational characteristics under different load conditions, helping to identify potential issues like load shifts or jerks.

Cable installation is a critical step, requiring careful unwinding to prevent kinking and secure attachment to the drum using a setscrew. The cable should be spooled neatly onto the drum under tension. After installation, the free-spooling operation should be checked, and the drag on the drum can be adjusted using a nylon screw and jam nut to prevent "birdnesting" (uneven spooling).

The clutch is a key operational feature, allowing for rapid unspooling of the cable. It can be engaged or disengaged either manually or via an air cylinder, depending on the winch configuration. For manual clutch shifters, the handle is pulled out, rotated 90 degrees, and released to engage or disengage. It is crucial that the clutch is fully engaged before pulling any load, a status often indicated by a green light if an indicator light assembly is present. For air cylinder clutch shifters, air pressure is applied to disengage, and removed to engage, with a return spring assisting engagement. A critical safety warning emphasizes that the clutch must never be disengaged under load.

When pulling heavy loads, a blanket or tarpaulin should be placed over the cable a few feet from the hook. This acts as a safety measure to slow down the snap-back of a broken cable, reducing the risk of serious injury. The winch is intended for vehicle recovery and pulling loads, and explicitly not for lifting, supporting, or transporting personnel. It should also not be used as a tie-down for vehicles during transport; loads must be secured to the carrier bed independently. Users must adhere to the maximum line pull ratings to avoid damaging the winch.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the RPH 8000T's performance and longevity. Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Cable Inspection and Lubrication: The cable should be frequently inspected for damage, such as fraying or broken strands, and lubricated. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
  • Clutch Engagement Check: The clutch's full engagement should be verified regularly. For manual clutches, monthly lubrication of the shaft with a few drops of oil, followed by working the clutch in and out, helps maintain smooth operation.
  • Brake Drift Check and Adjustment: The brake should be checked for drift, and adjustments made as needed. The oil-cooled automatic safety brake can be adjusted by loosening a lock nut and turning an adjusting screw clockwise to increase torque. Over-tightening should be avoided to prevent damage. A special adapter and torque wrench can be used to set the brake torque accurately.
  • Oil Level and Replacement: The oil level in the winch brake housing should be checked monthly and maintained at the specified level. The oil should be replaced annually or more frequently if the winch is used often, using recommended high-performance tractor transmission fluid and an oil additive for quietest operation.
  • Free-spooling Check: Ensure the drum cable does not overrun or "birdnest" during free-spooling. Adjustments to the nylon drag screw may be necessary.
  • Bushing and Seal Replacement: Drum bushings and seals should be replaced if they show signs of grease seepage.
  • Gear Lubrication: Additional lubricant, specifically Mobilith SHC 007, should be added to the gears if required during overhaul.
  • Mounting Alignment: Proper mounting is crucial to prevent excessive bushing wear and difficulty in free-spooling. The three major sections (motor end, cable drum, and gear-housing end) must be securely aligned. Tie plates are used to maintain this alignment.
  • Indicator Light Assembly: If present, the clutch engagement indicator light should be tested. If not functioning, the light and/or switch may need replacement.

The manual also provides a detailed troubleshooting guide to address common issues such as the drum not rotating, slow winch operation, free-spooling problems, oil leakage, loads drifting, cable birdnesting, and excessive noise. Overhaul instructions are provided for disassembling and reassembling components, including the motor, coupling, end bearings, input shaft, gears, brake housing, and various seals and O-rings, emphasizing the replacement of worn or damaged parts and proper lubrication during reassembly.
