Questions and Answers

Overview

This manual describes the Randell PT-W-L Series Prep Tables, which are commercial refrigeration units designed for food preparation and storage in professional kitchen environments. These units are specifically intended for use in laboratories in commercial, industrial, or institutional occupancies, as defined by ASHRAE 15, the Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems.

Function Description

The Randell PT-W-L Series Prep Tables are self-contained, air-cooled refrigeration units that utilize R290 flammable refrigerant. Their primary function is to maintain food products at safe and desired temperatures, both in the base storage area and in the top rail where condiment pans are placed. The units are equipped with a Carel controller, which manages the refrigeration cycle, including compressor operation, defrost cycles, and evaporator fan activity. This controller also provides low voltage protection, preventing the compressor from operating if the voltage drops below 104V.

The prep tables are designed to ensure proper temperatures for condiments when utilized correctly. They feature standard hooded roll covers that should be kept in the closed position when the unit is not in use and between rush periods to maintain product temperatures, especially in warmer environments. All individual condiment pans must be in the rail at all times. If no product is available or necessary, the manual suggests filling empty pans with 1 to 2 inches of water as an insulating barrier.

Usage Features

The units are designed for normal operating temperatures between 70°F (21°C) and 86°F (32°C). Operating outside of these temperatures may cause premature product wear or failure. The temperature control is factory preset for optimum performance, but users can adjust it to achieve desired temperatures based on varying ambient conditions, elevation, food type, and operational needs.

The Carel controller provides a clear LED display indicating the unit's operational status, including:

  • Compressor energized: Indicates the compressor is actively running to cool the unit.
  • Defrost in progress: Shows when the unit is undergoing a defrost cycle.
  • Evaporator fan energized: Indicates the evaporator fan is running.
  • An alarm is occurring: Signals a potential issue or fault within the system.

Users can power the unit on or off by pressing and holding the controller power button for more than 3 seconds. Manual defrost can also be initiated by pressing and holding the defrost button for more than 3 seconds.

Adjusting the set point (temperature) is straightforward:

  1. Press and hold the "set" button for 1 second to access the set point.
  2. Once the set point starts flashing, use the up or down buttons to adjust the temperature.
  3. Press the "set" button for 3 seconds to save the new set point.

For units equipped with drawers, the manual provides instructions for removal and installation. Drawers should slide freely and fully extend, seating properly in the cabinet when closed. The drawer tracks have arrows etched or stickered on them, always facing forward and up, to guide proper installation.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the Randell PT-W-L Series Prep Tables. Unified Brands strongly recommends a preventive maintenance program that includes monthly, weekly, and daily procedures. Neglecting these guidelines may void the warranty for repairs and parts replacements.

Daily Maintenance:

  • Cleaning: Clean all gaskets on a weekly basis with a solution of warm water and a mild detergent. This prevents gaskets from becoming brittle and losing their sealing ability.
  • Condenser Coil: Clean condenser coils monthly. The condenser coil and evaporator fan must be clean to ensure proper airflow and heat transfer. Dust, grease, and other debris can accumulate, reducing efficiency and increasing energy consumption. Use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner to remove debris.
  • Evaporator Fan: Clean fan blades on the condensing unit and evaporator assembly with a solution of warm water and mild detergent.
  • Gaskets: Clean all gaskets with a mild detergent and warm water. Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly or food-grade lubricant to maintain flexibility.
  • Drain Pan and Drain Line: Clean the drain pan and drain line daily to prevent blockages and odors. Use a stiff brush and hot water with a mild detergent. Flush with clean water.
  • Door Seals: Check door gaskets for tightness by closing the door on a piece of paper. If the paper slides out easily, the gasket may need adjustment or replacement.

Important Cleaning Precautions:

  • DO NOT use sharp utensils and/or objects.
  • DO NOT use steel pads, wire brushes, scrapers, or chloride cleaners on stainless steel surfaces.
  • DO NOT use abrasive cleaning solvents or hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) on stainless steel.
  • DO NOT pressure wash equipment, as this can damage electrical components.

Service and Refrigerant Handling:

  • R290 Refrigerant: The unit uses R290 flammable refrigerant. Service work must be performed by factory-authorized service personnel certified in R290 systems to minimize the risk of ignition due to incorrect parts or improper service.
  • Safety: No smoking or open flames are allowed when servicing the equipment. A CO2 or powder type fire extinguisher should be available.
  • Parts: Replacement parts must be factory OEM and have specific UL certification for non-sparking components.
  • Leak Checking: Do not use a Halid leak detector on an R290 system. Electronic leak detectors must be specifically designated for combustible gas. Bubble solution or ultrasonic leak detectors are acceptable.
  • Refrigerant Recovery: Follow all national and local regulations for R-290 refrigerant recovery.
  • Charging: Follow the charge amount specified on the data tag. Ensure the system is sealed, leak-checked, and evacuated to a minimum 500 microns before charging.

The manual also emphasizes the importance of proper installation, including ensuring the unit is level, has adequate clearances for ventilation, and is connected to a dedicated electrical line with correct voltage and amperage. Failure to follow installation guidelines and recommendations may void the warranty.
