12.1AISoverview
AISusesdigitalradiosignalstotransmit‘real-time’
informationbetweenvesselsandshore-based
stationsviadedicatedVHFradiofrequencies.This
informationisusedtoidentifyandtrackvesselsin
thesurroundingareaandtoprovidefast,automatic
andaccuratecollisionawarenessdata.Vesselsand
aidsequippedwithAIStransmittersthatarewithin
rangecanbedisplayedastargetsintheChartand
Radarapplications.
Important:Itisnotmandatoryforvesselstobe
ttedwithAISequipment.Therefore,youshould
notassumethatyourMFDwilldisplayALLvessels
inyourarea.Dueprudenceandjudgementshould
beexercised.AISshouldbeusedtocomplement
Radar,NOTsubstituteit.
WithanAISunitconnectedtoyoursystemyoucan:
•Displaytargetsforanyothertransmitting
AIS-equippedvesselswithinrange.Upto100
targetscanbedisplayedsimultaneously.Youcan
eitherdisplayalltargetsorjustdangeroustargets.
•Displaypositiondatabeingbroadcastbythese
targets,suchastheirposition,course,speedand
rate-of-turn.
•DisplayvectorsforAIStargets.Vectorscanbe
displayedforeachtarget.Thesevectorsindicate
thevesselsdirectionoftravelandthedistanceit
willtraveloveraspeciedperiodoftime(COG/
SOGvector).T argetsdisplayedwiththeirvectors
arereferredtoas‘activetargets’andarescaled
accordingtothesizeofthevessel.Thelargerthe
vessel,thelargerthetarget.
•Displaybasicordetailedinformationforeach
targetvessel,includingsafety-criticaltargetdata.
•SetupaDangeroustargetalarmtoalertyouifan
AIStargetisgettingtooclose.
•ViewT argetinterceptiongraphicsfortargetsto
helpimprovecollisionawareness.
•AddAIS-equippedfriendsandregularcontactsto
a“BuddyList”
AISSimulatorMode
Raymarinerecommendsthatyouusethesimulator
functiontofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeAIS
features.Whenthesimulatorfunctionisenabled
(Homescreen>Set-up>SystemSettings>
Simulator).Itdisplays20AIStargetswithina25
nmrange.Thesetargetsaredisplayedusingthe
appropriateAIStarget'sstatussymbol,andmove
aroundthescreenasiftheywererealtargets.
Note:IncomingsafetymessagesareNOT
displayedwhilethesimulatorisenabled.
