Do you have a question about the Raypak E3T ELS 0005 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The document is an installation and operation manual for the Raypak E3T Electric 3-Series Titanium Electric Heater, designed for spa and pool heating.

Function Description

The Raypak E3T Electric Heater is an advanced spa/pool electrical heater designed to provide efficient heating for pools and spas. It operates by circulating water through heating elements, raising its temperature to a desired set point. The heater is flow-activated, meaning it will only energize its elements when there is sufficient water flow, preventing dry-firing and overheating. It includes a digital control panel for temperature setting and monitoring, and can also be integrated with external remote controls for operation.

Water Flow Requirements:

  • Minimum flow rate: 15 gpm (57 lpm)
  • Maximum flow rate: 60 gpm (227 lpm)
  • The heater will not energize elements if water flow is under 15 gpm (57 lpm).

Temperature Control:

  • Digital temperature control settable from 40°-104°F (4°C-40°C) in one-degree increments.
  • ECO trip point: 140°F (60°C).

Plumbing Connections:

  • ELS 0005 and 0011: 1-1/2" NPT inlet and outlet plumbing connections.
  • ELS 0018 and 0027: 2" NPT inlet and outlet plumbing connections.

Usage Features

  • Digital Control Panel: Allows users to set the desired water temperature with a simple turn of a knob. The display shows the set temperature, and for models ELS 0018 and 0027, it continuously displays both inlet and outlet temperatures. Models ELS 0005 and 0011 can display inlet and outlet temperatures by turning the knob right or left on the GPM screen.
  • Flow Activation: The heater is designed to operate only when there is sufficient water flow, preventing damage to heating elements. It has a 1-minute built-in time delay after sensing sufficient water flow to ensure the tank is completely filled and air is purged before elements energize.
  • Temperature Unit Switching: The control knob can be held for two seconds to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius display.
  • Remote Operation: The unit can be connected to external remote controls (toggle switch or third-party remote contacts) for turning the heater on/off. The heater itself does not supply power to the remote; it only provides a switching function.
  • Safety Features: Includes high limit manual reset to prevent overheating. Fault codes (E1-E5) are displayed on the digital panel to indicate specific issues such as sensor shorts or remote wiring status.
  • Outdoor Installation: Designed for both indoor and outdoor use. However, it is recommended to protect the heater from direct rain runoff from roofs to prevent damage.

Maintenance Features

  • Water Chemistry Importance: The manual emphasizes the critical role of maintaining proper pool/spa water chemistry to ensure the health of users and the longevity of the heater. Specific allowable levels for water temperature, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, salt, free chlorine, and total dissolved solids are provided. Failure to maintain balanced water chemistry, including lime scale build-up or low pH, voids the warranty.
  • Chemical Dosing: All chemicals must be introduced downstream of the heater and fully diluted before circulating through the heater. Automatic chlorinators must feed downstream and include an anti-siphoning device or check valve.
  • Air Purging: Before initial start-up and after any maintenance that may introduce air into the plumbing pipes (e.g., cleaning/changing cartridge filter), it is crucial to turn off power to the heater and purge all air from the system. The circulation system must run for at least two minutes before powering up the heater to prevent dry-firing of elements.
  • Freeze Protection: For installations in freezing conditions, the water circuit of the heater, pump, and filter must be protected by draining the system. This involves disconnecting or turning off the heater, turning off the pool pump, and loosening PVC unions on the inlet and outlet pipes to allow water to drain.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A dedicated section provides common problems, their causes, and solutions, such as checking filters, skimmer baskets, pump speed, resetting high limits, checking input voltage, and addressing poor water chemistry.
  • Illustrated Parts List: Detailed diagrams and a list of parts with their corresponding part numbers are provided for models ELS 0005/0011 and ELS 0018/0027, facilitating identification and replacement of components.
