Overview

This document describes the Razor A5 Prime™ Scooter, an owner's manual providing essential information for safe operation, assembly, maintenance, and warranty. It emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding the entire manual before allowing a child to use the product, and advises contacting Razor for assistance rather than returning the product to the store. The manual also notes that illustrations are for demonstration purposes and may not reflect the exact appearance of the actual product, with specifications subject to change without notice. Users are encouraged to have their product and its 22-character product I.D. code available when contacting Razor for warranty or replacement parts.

Function Description

The Razor A5 Prime™ Scooter is designed for recreational use, providing a means of personal transport by pushing off the ground. It features a folding mechanism for portability and storage, an adjustable handlebar for rider comfort, and a rear brake for controlled stopping. The scooter is intended for use on smooth, paved surfaces, away from motor vehicles and potential traffic hazards. It is crucial that the scooter is used in controlled environments, free of loose debris, water, sand, gravel, dirt, or leaves, as these conditions can impair traction and contribute to accidents. The product is built to specific Razor design specifications, and the use of non-Razor or aftermarket parts may compromise its compatibility, safety, and void the warranty.

Usage Features

Unfolding the Scooter: To unfold the scooter for the first time, the user must release the folding mechanism. This involves placing the scooter on the ground, putting one foot on the deck plate, and pulling the Anti-Rattle knob up. The T-bar is then raised until it securely locks into the upright position. The Anti-Rattle knob is spring-loaded and will automatically lock when fully upright. To activate the anti-rattle feature, the knob should be twisted to the right to tighten it, though over-tightening is not necessary. It is important to keep fingers clear of the pivoting mechanism during this process and ensure others are standing clear.

Adjusting the Handlebar Height: The handlebar height can be adjusted to suit the rider. First, the quick-release lever needs to be opened. The tension of this lever can be adjusted by manually tightening or loosening the Allen bolt, ensuring it can be opened and closed by hand and the T-bar slides freely when open. Once the lever is open, the T-bar is slid to the desired position, and the quick-release lever is resecured to lock it in place. If the T-bar is raised to its maximum height, a push button located directly below the quick-release lever must be depressed to unlock the T-bar. Failure to properly secure the quick-release lever can cause the T-bar to telescope up or down during riding, leading to loss of control and falls.

Attaching the Handlebars (Initial Assembly): For initial assembly, the handlebars must be raised to the desired height (as per the adjustment instructions). The collar clamp is then loosened and slid upward. The T-bar is inserted into the fork until it bottoms out on the headset locknut. If necessary, the T-bar can be carefully twisted side to side while pushing downward to ensure it bottoms out. With the front wheel pointed straight ahead, the handlebars square to the front wheel, and the Razor logo facing the front, the collar clamp is tightened securely. It is critical not to thread the handlebar into the front fork thread. Improper installation and tightening of the collar clamp can lead to loss of control and falls.

Riding the Scooter: To ride, one foot is placed on the baseboard, and the other foot is used to push forward. Both hands should be on the handlebars for steering. For enhanced cornering, the rider should lean slightly into the direction of the turn.

Stopping the Scooter: For controlled stops, the rider applies the brake by stepping on the rear brake. Razor recommends practicing applying the brake at various speeds in an open, obstruction-free area before riding around others.

Using the Kickstand: To deploy the kickstand, press down on it with a foot, then pull the scooter back and up onto the kickstand. The scooter should not be stood on or ridden when the kickstand is deployed. To retract the kickstand, move the scooter forward.

Folding the Scooter (for storage/transport): To fold the scooter, the anti-rattle feature must first be deactivated by twisting the knob to the left until it is loose (no more than one full turn is needed). Then, the anti-rattle knob is pulled up, and the T-bar is lowered to fold the scooter. As with unfolding, fingers must be kept clear of the pivoting mechanism, and others should stand clear.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning Your Scooter: The scooter should be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust. Industrial cleaners, solvents, alcohol, alcohol-based, or ammonia-based cleaners should not be used, as they can damage the surfaces, plastic components, or soften decals.

Wheels and Bearings: Under normal conditions, Razor wheels and wheel bearings are maintenance-free. However, the owner or guardian is responsible for periodically inspecting the wheels for wear and tear, the axle for proper tightness, and the bearings for side-to-side play and loose parts. Play in a wheel or bearing indicates excessive wear and necessitates immediate replacement with genuine Razor wheels. Worn wheels/bearings are considered normal wear-and-tear and are not covered by the Razor Warranty. Using non-genuine Razor wheels may not be compatible with the scooter, affecting safety and voiding the warranty.

Replacement Parts: Frequently requested replacement parts are available for purchase at authorized Razor retail partners. A complete selection of replacement parts can be found on shop.razor.com.

Repair Centers: A list of authorized Razor repair centers can be found online at www.razor.com. Additional customer service contact information is provided in the manual.

Pre-Ride Checklist: Before every ride, a pre-ride checklist should be followed:

  • Loose Parts: Check and secure all fasteners. Ensure the collar clamp, quick-release lever, and anti-rattle knob are properly locked in place.
  • Replacement Parts: Replace worn or broken parts immediately. Contact Razor for parts or visit www.razor.com.
  • Safety Gear: Always wear proper protective equipment, including an approved safety helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads. Shoes (lace-up with rubber soles) should always be worn, with shoelaces tied and kept away from the wheels. Never ride barefoot or in sandals.

General Safety Warnings: Scooter riding is a hazardous activity that can lead to serious injury or death if proper safety precautions are not followed. Riders should always wear safety equipment, ride on smooth paved surfaces away from motor vehicles, and avoid sharp bumps, drainage grates, sudden surface changes, and debris. Wet weather impairs traction, braking, and visibility, so riding at night or when visibility is impaired is not recommended. The brake can get hot from continuous use and should not be touched after braking. Excessive speed, especially downhill, should be avoided. Adults must assist children with initial assembly and adjustments. All local traffic and scootering laws and regulations must be obeyed, and pedestrians should be watched out for. The A5 Prime scooter has a maximum weight limit of 220 lb (100 kg). A child's maturity, skill, and ability to follow rules should determine if they are allowed to ride. Children under age eight (8) should not use the scooter, and all children and preteens should ride with adult supervision. Rider weight does not necessarily indicate appropriate size or control ability.

Acceptable Riding Practices and Conditions: Direct parental supervision is required. Scooters are for controlled environments, not public streets. Riders must maintain a hold on the handlebars at all times. Only one child should ride at a time. Steps, sloped driveways, hills, roadways, alleys, or swimming pool areas should be avoided. Fingers and other body parts should be kept away from the product when folding or unfolding. Adults should not allow children to assist with assembly or folding. Scooters are for solid, flat, clean, dry surfaces. Wet, slick, uneven, or rough surfaces impair traction. Mud, ice, puddles, or water should be avoided. Excessive speeds, especially downhill, should be avoided. Indoor use that could damage surfaces like carpet or flooring is not recommended. Riding at night or when visibility is impaired is not advised.

Proper Riding Attire: Children should always wear proper protective equipment, including an approved safety helmet (which may be legally required), shoes with tied shoelaces, knee pads, and elbow pads. Barefooted or sandal riding is not allowed.

Inspection and Maintenance: Always inspect the scooter prior to riding. Proper inspection and maintenance reduce the risk of injury. All fasteners should be checked and secured before every ride, and worn or broken parts should be replaced immediately.

Local Laws and Regulations: Check local laws and regulations regarding scooter use, including helmet requirements, as these vary by area.

Stunt Riding Warning: Wheelies and other stunt-type riding reduce the ability to maneuver and control the scooter. If attempting stunts, necessary precautions, appropriate protective gear, and practice in a safe, obstruction-free area are essential.

Failure to use common sense and heed these warnings increases the risk of serious injury. The scooter should be used at the rider's own risk, with appropriate and serious attention to safe operation.
