This device generates and uses radio frequency
(RF) energy, and if not installed and used properly,
this equipment may cause interference to radio
and television reception.
If this equipment does cause interference to radio
or television reception (which you can determine
by unplugging the unit), try to correct the
interference by one or more of the following
measures:
• Re-orient the receiving antenna (that is, the
antenna for the radio or television that is
“receiving” the interference).

Overview

This document describes a clock radio with a CD player, model RP4803, manufactured by RCA.

Function Description

The RP4803 is a clock radio with an integrated CD player. It features a digital clock display, AM/FM radio tuning, and an alarm function that can wake the user with either the radio, CD, or a traditional alarm sound. A memory holding system, powered by a 9V battery (not included), ensures that time and alarm settings are retained during power interruptions. The device also includes a "Sleep Mode" for automatic radio/CD shutdown and a "Nap Mode" for short-duration alarms.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Product Type: Clock Radio with CD player
  • Brand: RCA
  • Model: RP4803
  • Power Supply: 120V~60Hz
  • Power Consumption: 11 Watts
  • Battery Backup: Requires one 9V battery (not included) for memory holding system.
  • Display: Digital display with 12-hour standard mechanism.
  • Antennas: Built-in ferrite rod antenna for AM reception; power cord acts as FM antenna.

Usage Features

Clock Operation

  • Setting Time: Press the SET button until the clock icon is displayed, then use REV or FWD buttons to set the time. AM or PM icons indicate the time of day.
  • Power Failure Indicator: If AC power is interrupted, the digital display will blink, indicating that time and alarm settings should be re-adjusted. The battery backup system prevents loss of these settings during an outage.

Radio Operation

  • Turning On/Off: Press ON to turn on the radio and OFF to turn it off.
  • Band Selection: Slide the FM/AM switch to select the desired broadcast band (AM or FM).
  • Tuning Stations: Use the TUNING knob to select a station.
  • Built-In AFC: The Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) works on FM only, reducing drift and keeping the radio locked to the tuned station. It's recommended to tune carefully at the loudest and clearest point.
  • Antenna Optimization: For AM, rotating the unit slightly may improve reception. For FM, ensure the power cord is stretched to its full length and not coiled, as it acts as the antenna. Moving the power cord's position may also improve reception.

CD Player Operation

  • Loading Disc: Lift to open the CD compartment door, insert a disc, and close the door.
  • Playback: Press PLAY/PAUSE (▷00) to start playback.
  • Volume Adjustment: Adjust using the VOL knob.
  • Track Navigation: Use REV (◁◁) or FWD (▷▷) to skip backward or forward through tracks.
  • Stopping Playback: Press STOP (■) to stop CD playback.
  • No Disc Indicator: If no disc is in the compartment, "nd" will be shown on the display.
  • Play Modes: During playback, press CD MODE to toggle between:
    • REPEAT ONE (1): Repeats the current track.
    • REPEAT ALL (ALL): Repeats the entire disc.
    • SHUFFLE (SHUF): Plays tracks randomly.
    • SHUFFLE REPEAT (SHUF ALL): Plays random tracks repeatedly.

Alarm Operation

  • Setting Wake Time: Press the SET button until WAKE 1/WAKE 2 icon is blinking, then use REV or FWD to set the wake time. Holding these buttons will increase/decrease the time at a faster rate.
  • Waking Source: Can be woken by WAKE (alarm sound), RADIO, or CD. Select an AM/FM station or ensure a CD is inserted. Press WAKE 1 or WAKE 2 to select the desired source. Adjust volume with VOL.
  • CD Wake Track: While holding WAKE UP CD TRACK, use REV or FWD to select a specific CD track for waking.
  • GRAD-U-WAKE Feature: The alarm tone volume increases gradually to its maximum over 30-45 seconds. This feature is also present in Nap alarm.
  • Turning Off Alarm: Press OFF to turn off the alarm. The alarm will reactivate at the same time the following day.
  • Snooze Alarm: Press SNOOZE to temporarily silence the alarm. The alarm will sound again after the preset snooze period (default 9 minutes, adjustable from 1 to 30 minutes by holding SNOOZE and using REV/FWD). Snooze can be used repeatedly for up to 2 hours.
  • Nap Mode: Press NAP and release. The NAP indicator will flash. Adjust NAP time (10 minutes to 2 hours) using REV/FWD. The clock will show after 5 seconds if no button is pressed. Press NAP once to show remaining time.
  • Disabling Alarm Permanently: Press CANCEL. When the WAKE indicator is flashing, press WAKE 1 or WAKE 2 within 3 seconds to deactivate the alarm function permanently.

Display Features

  • Brightness Control: Adjust the BRIGHTNESS switch (HI for stronger, LO for weaker backlight).
  • Backlight Color Select: Choose from 4 backlight colors (green, blue, amber, white) by pressing COLOR SELECT. If AC power and backup battery are removed, the colors will cycle again when power is restored.
  • Seconds Time Display: Press and hold REV or FWD to show seconds display, release to return to hour and minute display.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Installation: To install the 9V battery for backup, remove the compartment door on the bottom of the radio, connect the battery to the plug, insert it, and replace the door.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules. If interference occurs, re-orient the receiving antenna, move the unit away from interfering equipment, or plug it into a different wall outlet. Consult the dealer or an experienced technician if issues persist.
  • Fuse Replacement: For continued protection against fire risk, replace only with the same type fuse.
  • Power Plug Safety: The polarized AC power plug (one blade wider than the other) is a safety feature. Do not attempt to bypass it; if it doesn't fit, turn the plug over or use a different outlet.
  • Service Information: This product should be serviced only by specially trained personnel. Refer to the included warranty for instructions on obtaining service.
  • Warranty: A one-year limited warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship. Proof of purchase is required for warranty claims. For Canadian customers, Thomson Multimedia Ltd. offers a 1-year replacement warranty.
