USER MANUAL
Thank you for purchasing the RCBS Digital Pocket Scale.
Please read all operating instructions carefully prior to
use. This electronic scale is a precision instrument, and will
provide years of reliable service. Never load the scale with
more than the maximum load capacity of 100 grams or 1500
grains. Overloading will permanently damage the scale.
Avoid any exposure to extreme heat or cold, your scale works
better when operated at normal room temperature. Always
allow the scale to acclimate to normal room temperature and
allow for sucient warm up time prior to calibration. This is
done to ensure the internal components have stabilized and
reached thermal equilibrium. 30 minutes will be a sucient
warm up period.
Keep your scale in a clean environment, free of dust, dirt and
moisture. Be aware of vibration and air currents as this can
also aect the scales performance. Maintain an adequate
distance from other electronic devices as some electronics
can cause an electrical disturbance which can also aect
the scales accuracy. Handle with care and apply all items to
be weighed directly onto the platform or in the provided
scale pan. This scale is built for its durability; however, try to
avoid unnecessary rough handling as this may permanently
damage the load cell.
Avoid shaking, dropping or otherwise shocking the scale. This
is a precision instrument and must be handled with extreme
care.
ONLY OPERATE THE SCALE ON A STABLE, VIBRATION FREE
SURFACE.
Prior to use, turn on scale by pressing the “ON/OFF” key.
Place the calibration weight onto the platform and allow
unit to warm up for 30 minutes prior to use.
CALIBRATION
1. Place scale on a at surface.
2. Press “ON/OFF” key to turn the scale on.
3. When “0.0” or “0.000” is displayed, press and hold the
“MODE” key until “CAL is displayed
4. Press the “MODE” key again, “50.00g” will ash.
5. Place the 50 gram Calibration weight onto the center of
the platform.
6. Leave the calibration weight on the platform until “PASS”
is displayed.
7. Remove calibration weight.
8. Scale will return to zero.
OPERATION
1. Use scale only after successful completion of calibration.
2. Use the “MODE” key to select the desired units of
measure; Grams (g) or Grains (gn).
3. Place the scale pan onto the platform and press the
TARE” key. This will tare out the scale pan, so objects
can be placed inside of the scale pan for weighing.
4. If the scale pan is not being used, press the “TARE” with
nothing on the platform, this will allow for placing
objects directly onto the platen for weighing.
It is good practice to periodically check the scale by placing
the calibration weight onto the platen. If the displayed weight
is o by more than +/- .01 g or .1 gn. ; re-calibrate the scale.

Overview

The RCBS 98914 Pocket Scale is a precision digital instrument designed for accurate weighing, particularly useful in reloading applications. It is built to provide reliable service over many years, provided it is handled with care and operated according to the instructions.

Function Description:

The primary function of the RCBS Pocket Scale is to accurately measure small weights, specifically in grams (g) and grains (gn). It is intended for use in reloading, where precise measurement of powder charges is critical for safety and performance. The scale features a digital display for easy reading of measurements and includes calibration capabilities to ensure accuracy. It can be used with a scale pan for weighing objects or directly on the platform. The scale is designed to be operated on a stable, vibration-free surface and requires a warm-up period to stabilize its internal components and reach thermal equilibrium for optimal accuracy.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 1500 grains (100.0 grams)
  • Accuracy: 0.1 grain (0.01 gram)
  • Units of Measure: Grains (gn) and Grams (g)
  • Power Source: 2 AAA batteries
  • Platform Size: 2.95 x 2.36 inches (75x60mm)
  • Operating Temperature: Normal room temperature for best performance.
  • Warm-up Time: 30 minutes recommended prior to use and calibration.

Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off: The scale is turned on by pressing the "ON/OFF" key.
  • Unit Selection: The "MODE" key allows users to select between grams (g) and grains (gn) as the desired unit of measure.
  • Calibration: Calibration is a crucial feature to maintain accuracy. It involves placing the scale on a flat surface, turning it on, pressing and holding the "MODE" key until "CAL" is displayed, pressing "MODE" again, and then placing a 50-gram calibration weight on the platform until "PASS" is displayed. The calibration weight should then be removed. Calibration should be performed before every use and re-checked frequently.
  • Tare Function: The "TARE" key allows users to zero out the weight of a scale pan or any other container placed on the platform, enabling the measurement of only the contents. This can be done with the scale pan on the platform or with nothing on the platform if objects are to be placed directly on the platen.
  • Overload Protection: The scale has a maximum load capacity of 100 grams or 1500 grains. Exceeding this limit will permanently damage the scale.
  • Environmental Considerations: The scale performs best in a clean environment, free of dust, dirt, moisture, vibration, and air currents. It should also be kept at an adequate distance from other electronic devices to avoid electrical disturbances.
  • Handling: The scale is a precision instrument and should be handled with care. Avoid shaking, dropping, or shocking the scale. Items should be placed directly onto the platform or in the provided scale pan. Do not press on the platform with your hand.
  • Temperature Stability: If the ambient temperature changes by more than a few degrees, the scale must be re-calibrated after allowing it to stabilize for 20-30 minutes.
  • Off-Center Placement: Avoid placing weights off-center on the platen, as this can lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Static Electricity: Static electricity can cause erratic readings. If static build-up is evident, the scale should be wiped with an anti-static sheet or sprayed with anti-static spray on a clean, soft cloth.
  • Powder Use: This digital scale is specifically for use with smokeless powders only. It is explicitly warned against using black powder due to the risk of explosion if it comes into contact with an electrical spark.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Keep the scale in a clean environment, free of dust, dirt, and moisture.
  • Calibration Weight Care: The calibration weight supplied with the scale is crucial for accuracy. It should be kept clean and carefully stored. If dropped or damaged, it should be inspected against known standards.
  • Periodic Checks: It is good practice to periodically check the scale's accuracy by placing the calibration weight onto the platen. If the displayed weight is off by more than +/- 0.01 g or 0.1 gn, the scale should be re-calibrated.
  • Powder Contamination: If powder gets inside the unit, operation should cease immediately, and the scale should not be used until it has been serviced by RCBS Customer Service.
  • Servicing: This instrument may only be serviced by a certified technician.
  • Warranty: The RCBS Pocket Scale comes with a one-year limited warranty covering defects in material or workmanship from the date of purchase. Warranty services require the unit to be returned to RCBS, postage paid, along with a check for return shipping and handling. The warranty does not cover damage from carelessness, misuse, improper installation, modification, or repairs by non-factory personnel.

The manual also emphasizes general reloading safety practices, such as wearing safety glasses, understanding procedures, avoiding shortcuts, maintaining a clean reloading area, keeping equipment and components out of reach of children, and not reloading when tired or impaired. It stresses the importance of using only laboratory-tested reloading data and observing maximum listed loads.
