Overview

This manual describes a residential gas water heater, FVIR certified, designed for heating potable water for domestic use and, in some configurations, for space heating applications. The primary function of this device is to provide a continuous supply of hot water for household needs, while also incorporating safety features and energy efficiency considerations.

Function Description

The water heater operates by burning natural gas or LP gas to heat water stored in an insulated tank. It features a gas control (thermostat) that regulates the water temperature, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water at the desired setting. The unit is equipped with a pilot burner, which is lit by a piezo-electric spark gas ignition system, and a main burner that ignites when hot water is demanded. A draft hood is integrated into the design to properly vent combustion gases to the outdoors, preventing the accumulation of harmful byproducts like carbon monoxide.

For safety, the water heater includes a temperature and pressure relief valve, which is factory-installed and designed to open if the water temperature or pressure exceeds safe limits. This prevents potential tank rupture due to excessive pressure. The unit also incorporates a combustion shut-off device that activates if undesirable combustion conditions occur, such as the presence of flammable vapors or blockage of combustion air inlet openings, ensuring safe operation.

In combination potable and space heating applications, the water heater can supply hot water to both domestic fixtures and a space heating unit. In such setups, a mixing or tempering valve is recommended in the hot water supply line to the house to reduce the risk of scalding, especially when the space heating requires elevated water temperatures. The system is designed to prevent contamination of drinking water by ensuring that any piping or components used in combination applications are suitable for use with drinking water.

Usage Features

The water heater is designed for ease of use with a temperature dial on the gas control (thermostat) allowing users to set their desired water temperature. The manual emphasizes the importance of selecting a safe temperature setting, particularly in households with small children, disabled, or elderly persons, where a lower setting (e.g., 120°F or 49°C) is recommended to prevent scalding. The unit is shipped with the thermostat set at its lowest setting for safety.

To light the water heater, a specific procedure involving the gas control knob and piezo-electric spark generator button is outlined, ensuring a safe ignition process. Users are instructed to smell for gas leaks before attempting to light the pilot and to follow a clear sequence of steps to establish the pilot flame. The unit is designed to prevent manual lighting of the pilot by opening the inner door, reinforcing the safety of the piezo-electric ignition system.

The water heater is suitable for installation in various residential settings, including garages (without an 18-inch stand if FVIR certified), alcoves, and closets, provided that proper clearances from combustible materials and adequate combustion and ventilation air are maintained. The manual highlights the importance of not obstructing the combustion air inlet openings located around the lower perimeter of the water heater. For installations in areas where leakage could cause damage, a suitable catch pan, adequately drained, is recommended.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the water heater. The manual provides guidelines for:

  • Venting System Inspection: Periodical inspection of the gas venting system and chimney is recommended to ensure proper positioning and secure attachment of vent connectors. Users are advised to check for soot or deterioration and to contact a qualified service technician if issues are found. Testing for spillage at the draft hood relief opening after 5 minutes of main burner operation is also suggested.
  • Burner Inspection: Annual visual inspection of both the pilot burner and main burners is recommended. Users can inspect the pilot flame through the sight glass window on the inner door and the main burner while firing. Any unusual burner operation should prompt a shut-off of the water heater and qualified service assistance. Cleaning of the burner, if necessary, should only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Draining the Water Heater: Instructions are provided for draining the water heater, which may be necessary for maintenance, extended shut-down periods, or to prevent freezing. This involves turning off the gas supply, opening a hot water faucet, and connecting a garden hose to the drain valve.
  • Relief Valve Maintenance: The manual stresses that the temperature and pressure relief valve should discharge into a suitable open drain to prevent water damage. It also warns against installing any valves or restrictions between the relief valve and the tank.
  • Anode Rod Inspection/Replacement: The water heater is equipped with an anode rod to prolong the life of the glass-lined tank by minimizing corrosion. While not explicitly detailing replacement steps, it notes that operation without the anode rod will shorten tank life and void warranty coverage, implying the need for periodic inspection and replacement by qualified personnel.
  • Condensation Management: The manual explains that condensation can occur when the tank is first filled or during heavy water draws with cold inlet water. This is considered normal and should disappear as the water heats up. Persistent condensation may indicate leaks, which should be investigated.
  • Sediment Trap: The installation of a sediment trap in the gas supply line is mandated by the National Fuel Gas Code to prevent debris from entering the gas control, contributing to reliable operation.
  • Thermal Expansion Control: The manual explains the phenomenon of thermal expansion in closed water systems and recommends installing an expansion tank in the cold water line to prevent rapid pressure increases and potential damage to the water heater and relief valve.

The manual also emphasizes the importance of keeping the area around the water heater clear of combustible materials and flammable vapors to prevent fire and explosion hazards. It advises against attempting repairs of gas piping, gas control, burners, vent connectors, or other safety devices, directing users to qualified service personnel for such tasks.
